Chapter 33: The coronation dress?

Rainbow's POV

It's been about a month (forth month) since the ball, and I can still vividly remember the way Soarin smiled at me during our dance. It's strange how that moment keeps replaying in my head. I'd never been the type to get caught up in things like that, but something about it was different.

The weeks that followed were quieter, almost too quiet after my friends left. I missed them more than I expected. Saying goodbye was harder than I thought it would be.

Flashback

The week after the ball, we all gathered outside the castle. The air was crisp, the kind that hinted at the changing seasons. My friends were packing up, their portal already opened.

"Well, sugarcube, this has been some adventure," Applejack said, adjusting her hat as she stood beside me. "But I reckon it's time we head back home. Sweet Apple Acres won't run itself."

Pinkie Pie bounced on her heels, her usual excitement dimmed just a notch. "Don't worry, Dashie! We'll be back before you know it. And when we do, I'll bring the biggest 'welcome back to Equestria' cake you've ever seen!"

I smiled, though it didn't quite reach my eyes. "I'll hold you to that, Pinkie."

Fluttershy gave me a soft hug, her voice barely above a whisper. "Take care of yourself, Rainbow. And if you ever need us, you know where to find us."

"I know," I replied, squeezing her back.

Twilight was next, her tone a mix of reassurance and practicality. "We'll meet again in about a month. There's still a lot we need to discuss about Aeatria and how we can help strengthen its ties with Equestria. Until then, stay safe."

"Yeah, I'll be fine," I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt.

Rarity, as always, made her farewell dramatic. "Rainbow, darling, do try to keep up appearances. I'll expect a full report on everything that happens here—and don't you dare ruin that beautiful dress I made for you!"

I rolled my eyes but couldn't help smiling. "Sure thing, Rarity."

The Wonderbolts were next, each of them giving their own unique goodbye.

Spitfire clapped me on the back, her trademark smirk in place. "Keep Soarin in line, will ya? And don't let him slack off on your training."

Fleetfoot winked. "Yeah, make sure he doesn't get too comfortable. He's been looking a little too relaxed lately."

Misty Fly nodded in agreement. "We'll be back for you both soon enough. Don't go soft on us, Dash."

Surprise just gave me a hug, giggling as she whispered, "I can't wait to hear all the juicy details when we're back!"

I rolled my eyes but hugged her back. "You guys are the worst, you know that?"

Finally, Blitz walked up, giving me a lopsided grin. "Don't let this place get to you, sis. And remember what I told you about Soarin—he's a good one."

I frowned, crossing my arms. "Why does everyone keep bringing him up? It's not like that."

Blitz just laughed, ruffling my hair. "Sure, whatever you say."

I watched as they all climbed into the portal. Pinkie peeped out, waving frantically.

"Don't forget! A month, Dashie!" she called.

"I won't!" I shouted back, waving until they disappeared down the road.

Present

Now, standing by the window of my room in Aeatria, I let out a sigh. It's only been a month, but it feels like a lifetime since I last saw them. I miss their laughter, their constant teasing, and even the chaos they brought with them.

But I also know they'll be back soon. And when they do, I'll have plenty of stories to tell—about Aeatria, the spirits, and maybe even... Soarin.

Not that I'm counting down the days or anything.

I leaned against the doorframe of my room, arms crossed, as Soarin stood in front of me, hands on his hips. He had that look again—the one that said he wasn't taking no for an answer.

"You're not getting out of this, Dash," he said, smirking.

I groaned. "Do I really have to go through all that? Can't I just wear something simple and call it a day?"

Soarin chuckled, shaking his head. "Not for your coronation. This isn't some casual event. You're about to be crowned queen, Rainbow. You need to look the part."

I rolled my eyes but stepped into the hallway. "Fine, but I'm not wearing anything over-the-top frilly. If Rarity were here, she'd try to drown me in sparkles."

"Well, lucky for you, I know just the person who can design something you'll actually like," Soarin said, his teal eyes glinting with amusement.

Curious despite myself, I raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? Who's this magical tailor?"

"You'll see," he replied, turning toward the staircase. "Now come on. The sooner we get this done, the sooner you can go back to doing... whatever it is you do when you're not arguing with me."

"Training," I said, trailing after him. "And for the record, I don't argue. I just... point out when you're wrong."

He laughed, his voice echoing in the grand halls. "Sure, Dash. Whatever you say."

The tailor's shop was nestled in the heart of the bustling town square, its entrance marked by a carved wooden sign that read "Elysian Threads" in elegant script. The inside was surprisingly cozy, with bolts of fabric in every color imaginable lining the walls and a faint scent of lavender in the air.

A petite woman with sharp eyes and a measuring tape draped around her neck greeted us. "Ah, Your Majesty," she said, bowing slightly to Soarin before turning her attention to me. "And this must be the soon-to-be queen. A pleasure to meet you."

"Uh, yeah," I said, scratching the back of my neck. "Nice to meet you too."

Soarin nudged me gently. "Rainbow, this is Althea. She's the best tailor in Aeatria. If anyone can make you look like a queen while keeping your style intact, it's her."

Althea smiled warmly. "Well, let's see what we're working with, shall we? Come, stand over here."

I followed her to a small platform surrounded by mirrors. As I stepped up, she pulled out her measuring tape and began taking my measurements with practiced precision.

"So," she said, glancing at me. "Do you have any preferences for the design? Colors, fabrics, anything specific you'd like?"

I hesitated, glancing at Soarin for help. He just shrugged, clearly enjoying my discomfort.

"Well, nothing too flashy," I said finally. "I like bold colors—reds, blues, maybe some gold accents. And no frills or lace. Keep it simple, but... strong, I guess?"

Althea nodded thoughtfully. "Bold and strong. I can work with that. Perhaps a fitted bodice with subtle embroidery, flowing into a sleek skirt? Something that allows for movement but still commands attention?"

I blinked, surprised by how quickly she seemed to understand. "Uh, yeah. That actually sounds... perfect."

"She's good, isn't she?" Soarin said, leaning casually against a nearby table.

I shot him a look. "Don't act like you planned this, hotshot."

He grinned, completely unfazed. "I just know talent when I see it."

Althea chuckled softly, stepping back to jot down some notes. "I'll prepare a few sketches for you to review tomorrow. In the meantime, I'll gather some fabric samples based on your preferences."

"Thanks," I said, hopping off the platform.

As we walked out of the shop, I glanced at Soarin. "You know, for once, I'm actually impressed. You didn't completely mess this up."

"High praise," he said, smirking. "But don't get used to it. I've got plenty more surprises up my sleeve."

I rolled my eyes, but a small smile tugged at my lips.
