Chapter 21: Writing a letters and getting the letters
That evening, Rainbow finally sat down at a large oak desk in her room, Soarin's words from earlier in her mind: "I bet they're going on about how 'those two' are probably up to all sorts of royal shenanigans."
Smiling to herself, she picked up a pen and began to write.
Dear Friends,
I bet you're wondering what I'm up to... or probably having a good laugh, imagining Soarin and me being all 'royal' out here. Truth is, it's not quite like you'd expect, but it's pretty amazing too. I miss you guys so much, though.
Pinkie, I'm counting on you to save me some cupcakes, alright? I swear, the desserts here are good, but nothing beats Sugarcube Corner. Rarity, if you could see these dresses they make here, you'd love it! Applejack, don't worry—I'm still finding ways to get in trouble. And Twilight, if you could see these libraries, you'd probably faint. Fluttershy, there are so many animals here you'd adore. You'd feel right at home.
But you know what? No matter where I go, nothing quite feels like home without you all. Give everyone a 'hey' from me, alright?
Rainbow paused, her pen hovering over the page. Just writing to them stirred up all those memories—flying with the Wonderbolts, saving Ponyville, or just laughing around the campfire with her friends. She took a steadying breath and wrote one last line.
Stay awesome, you guys. I'll be back before you know it. And yeah... I'll try not to let Soarin get us lost on the way back.
She then started to write to the wonderbolts
Dear Wonderbolts,
Hey, team! I hope you're all flying high back in Equestria.
I just wanted to take a moment to reach out and let you know how much I miss you guys. Being here in Enchancia is incredible, but it feels a little empty without you all by my side. The palace is filled with beautiful things, but nothing can compare to the thrill of soaring through the skies with my teammates—the laughter, the adrenaline, and the camaraderie we share.
I've been trying to keep busy with Soarin (don't take any ridiculous ideas it's just a friendship), but I catch myself thinking about our training sessions and the crazy stunts we pull off together. Remember the time we all worked on that new formation and ended up crashing into each other? I still laugh thinking about it, and I can't wait to get back and create more of those memories with you.
I want you all to know how proud I am to be part of this team. You inspire me every day to be better and to push my limits. Even though I'm away, I'm always cheering for you in spirit. I can't wait to reunite and hear all about your latest achievements. Just don't forget: when I return, I expect a race, and you better bring your best!
So, until then, keep flying strong and remember that I'm always with you in heart and spirit. I'm counting down the days until I'm back in the skies with my favorite ponies!
Stay awesome,
Rainbow Dash
With a satisfied nod, she folded the letter and sealed it, then headed to the palace messenger to arrange for it to be sent to Equestria.
As she made her way back to her room, a warmth bloomed in her chest. She wasn't alone—not really. With Soarin by her side here in Enchancia, and her friends back in Equestria thinking of her, Rainbow felt an unbreakable connection tying them all together.
In Equestria
"Guys! You won't believe it!" Twilight exclaimed, placing the letters on the table. "Look! Rainbow sent us a letter!"
Pinkie Pie's eyes lit up, and she practically bounced in place. "Ooh, ooh! What does it say? I bet it's filled with all sorts of royal fun!"
Twilight opened the envelope, her eyes scanning the familiar, scrawled handwriting. "Let me read it aloud!"
As Twilight began to read, the room filled with anticipation. Rainbow's playful tone shone through, and her friends laughed at her antics. When they reached the part where she mentioned missing them and their usual shenanigans, the mood shifted slightly.
"Aw, she really does miss us," Fluttershy said, her voice soft as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I miss her too. I hope she's doing okay out there."
Rarity nodded, her expression a mix of pride and sadness. "It sounds like she's enjoying herself, but I wish we could be there with her. I hope she's making a good impression on all those royals."
Pinkie Pie's smile wavered for a moment, but she quickly perked up again. "We should throw her a 'Welcome Back, Rainbow!' party when she returns! With extra cupcakes!"
"Definitely!" Applejack agreed, crossing her arms. "And we should make a big banner! Maybe one that says, 'The Princess of Cool is Back!'"
As Twilight finished reading the letter, the group sat in a contemplative silence. Each of them felt a mix of happiness for Rainbow and a longing to have her back.
"Hey, let's write her back," Twilight suggested. "Let her know how much we're thinking of her."
"Good idea!" Spike chimed in, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "I can help!"
The Wonderbolts' Training Grounds
Back in Equestria, the Wonderbolts gathered at their training grounds, a letter from Rainbow Dash in Spitfire's hooves. As she opened it, the team stood around, anticipation buzzing in the air.
"Let's hear what the fastest flyer has to say!" Thunderlane said, grinning.
As Spitfire read through the letter, the team's expressions shifted from curiosity to pride, and finally to a light-hearted teasing vibe.
"Ha! She thinks she's still the fastest!" Fleetfoot chuckled, nudging Spitfire playfully. "I'd love to see her try to keep up with us!"
"Yeah, right!" Spitfire replied, rolling her eyes dramatically. "I bet she's been all soft and royal out there. Next, she'll be asking us to call her 'Your Highness'!"
As they laughed, there was a palpable sense of camaraderie, a shared feeling of missing their friend but also of pride in her journey.
"Let's write her back," Spitfire suggested, a smirk on her face. "And remind her who the real speedsters are."
Back in Enchancia
Unbeknownst to Rainbow Dash, Soarin watched her with a soft smile as she diligently wrote letters to her friends and the Wonderbolts. The way she concentrated on the task reminded him just how much she missed them.
Soarin's POV
A warmth filled my chest as I took in her focused expression. She really misses them... Maybe I should do something about that.
"Rainbow?" I called out, breaking the peaceful silence.
She turned to me, her eyes lighting up. "Soarin, what are you doing here?"
"Well," I began, stepping closer, "I thought it would be great if we could bring your friends, Misty Fly, Spitfire, Fleetfoot and Surprise here to see this place. You can have them over for about two weeks, and then a few days before the coronation, they can come back to celebrate."
Her face lit up with pure joy, and before I could react, she pounced on me, wrapping her arms around me in a tight hug. "Thank you so much, Soarin!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement.
I returned her embrace, feeling her warmth against me. "But you still have to train in the meantime," I reminded her gently, not wanting her to forget the important responsibilities ahead.
"Sure! Should I write to them?" she asked, pulling back slightly to meet my gaze.
I shook my head, a playful smile on my face. "No need... we'll surprise them!"
Her eyes sparkled with delight. "Yayyy!! Thank you so much, Soarin! You have no idea how much this means to me."
"My pleasure, Dashie," I said, feeling my heart swell at her enthusiasm. "We'll head out tomorrow evening."
"Sounds good!" she replied, practically bouncing on her toes.
"Alright, see you later... and have a good sleep," I said, giving her a small wave as I stepped back toward the door.
As I watched her turn back to her desk, a content smile on her face, I couldn't help but feel a rush of warmth at the thought of reuniting her with her friends. The way she had hugged me so tightly earlier made my heart race, and a faint blush crept across my cheeks. Knowing that this surprise would bring a spark of joy back into her life filled me with excitement. I was genuinely thrilled to be a part of something that would mean so much to her.
