Chapter 10: Farewell to Friends, Off to Enchancia
Rainbow Dash's POV
The courtyard of the castle buzzed with energy as ponies hurried about, preparing for the upcoming trip. The Wonderbolts stood in a group nearby, chatting amongst themselves, while the Mane 6 were gathered around Princess Twilight Sparkle, who seemed to be giving them a final pep talk before I left. I took a deep breath and made my way over to my friends, trying to ignore the small pang of nerves in my chest.
"So, Dash, are you really heading off to another universe?" Spitfire asked with a raised eyebrow. She was standing with Fleetfoot and Misty Fly, who both gave me curious looks.
"Yep," I replied, nodding confidently. "Soarin and I are going to Enchancia. It's... kind of a big deal." I rubbed the back of my neck, realizing how wild that sounded. "We're not sure how long we'll be gone, but don't worry—I'll be back before you know it."
Fleetfoot gave a dramatic sigh, a smirk curling on her lips. "Wow, I knew you were desperate to show Soarin your sense of adventure, but I didn't realize you'd hop dimensions to do it."
"Har har, very funny, Fleet," I shot back, rolling my eyes. "Try not to miss me too much, okay?"
Spitfire stepped forward, her usual stern expression softened just a bit. "Look, Rainbow Dash, whatever it is you're getting yourself into, just remember you've got a squad back here who'll be rooting for you. And don't do anything too reckless."
"Reckless? Me? Psh, never," I said, puffing out my chest. "You know I'm always careful."
"Yeah, right," Fleetfoot snorted. "Just make sure you come back in one piece, okay?"
I grinned and gave her a playful shove. "Same goes for you, Fleet. I don't want to come back to find out you've turned the Wonderbolts into a comedy act."
Before I could say anything else, Misty Fly stepped up and wrapped me in a tight hug. "Stay safe, Dash. We'll keep things under control here while you're away."
As the Wonderbolts gave their farewells, I felt a warmth spread through me. It was nice to know they cared, even if they wouldn't say it outright. The goodbye was short, though, since we all knew it wasn't forever. I'd be back with stories to tell soon enough.
Next, I trotted over to where Twilight and the rest of my friends stood. The princess looked at me with a mixture of concern and excitement in her eyes.
"Are you sure you're ready for this, Rainbow?" Twilight asked. "I mean, traveling to a completely different universe... it's a lot."
"I know it's a big deal, but you know me—I'm always up for a challenge," I replied, giving her a confident grin. "And besides, I've got Soarin with me. What could go wrong?"
"Just... be careful, okay?" Twilight said softly, her eyes meeting mine. "We'll be waiting for you to come back. Equestria won't be the same without you."
"Aww, you'll miss me," I teased, giving her a playful nudge. "Don't worry, Twilight. I'll bring back a souvenir or something."
Rarity stepped forward next, her eyes glistening as if she was about to cry. "Oh, darling, if you need anything—a new cloak, a stylish travel bag—just let me know. And do be careful, won't you? I can't bear the thought of anything happening to you."
"Relax, Rarity," I said, chuckling. "I'm not going to a fashion show; I'm just going on an adventure. But thanks—I'll be sure to look fabulous while doing it." I winked at her, and she gave me a grateful smile.
Applejack clapped me on the back with one of her strong hooves. "Well, shoot, Dash, you go out there and show 'em what a true-blue Equestrian is made of. Just don't forget where you come from, y'hear?"
"Don't worry, AJ. I'll bring a little slice of Equestria with me, no matter where I go," I said, giving her a wink.
Pinkie Pie, of course, bounced up and down excitedly, clutching a small pink box. "I packed you a little travel snack!" she squealed. "Just in case you get hungry while crossing dimensions! It's got cupcakes, cookies, a few sandwiches, some candy, a pie—"
"Pinkie!" I interrupted, laughing. "I appreciate it, but I don't think I'll be able to carry all of that."
"Oh, don't worry, silly. I made it super light with some magic from Twilight! It's practically weightless!" she said, shoving the box into my saddlebag. "Now you'll never be without a tasty treat!"
"Thanks, Pinkie," I said, giving her a hug. "You're the best."
Fluttershy approached me last, her soft eyes filled with worry. "Just... please, please be careful, Rainbow Dash," she said, her voice trembling a little. "I don't know what I'd do if... if something happened to you."
"Hey, I'll be fine, Fluttershy. You know me—I always come out on top," I said, pulling her into a gentle hug. "And besides, Soarin's going to be there. It's not like I'm going alone."
Rarity smirked, raising an eyebrow as she chimed in, "Oh, darling, we know. With Soarin by your side, I'm sure you'll have plenty of motivation to come out on top."
Rainbow Dash's cheeks turned a faint shade of pink. "It's not like that, Rarity!" she protested, giving a playful shove.
"Of course, dear, of course," Rarity replied with a knowing smile. "Just make sure you don't get too distracted, hmm?"
Applejack chuckled, tipping her hat back. "Heh, Rarity's got a point there, Dash. Y'all be sure to keep your head in the game."
Pinkie Pie bounced excitedly, grinning from ear to ear. "Ooooh, I bet you'll be like the ultimate power couple! Saving the day and looking fabulous doing it!"
Twilight giggled, adjusting her wings. "We're just teasing you, Rainbow. We know you're more than capable of handling whatever Enchancia throws your way."
Fluttershy gave a small, supportive smile. "We're all rooting for you. Just remember to stay safe."
Spitfire crossed her hooves and smirked at Soarin. "And you, Soarin—make sure you don't slow her down, alright?"
Soarin rolled his eyes with a grin. "Oh, don't worry, Spity. I think I can keep up."
Rainbow Dash shook her head, but a small smile tugged at her lips. "You guys are impossible."
Fluttershy smiled, though her concern didn't fully disappear. She gave me a small smile and whispered, "Just come back soon, okay?"
I gave a confident flap of my wings. "Of course I will. This is just another adventure, right?"
As the farewells wrapped up, Soarin trotted over, his saddlebag slung over his shoulder. "Everything ready?" he asked, giving a quick glance around at our friends.
"Yep. Let's get this show on the road," I replied. I felt a rush of excitement shoot through me, realizing that in a few moments, we'd be leaving Equestria behind. The portal to Enchancia shimmered just ahead, a swirling vortex of colors that looked like it had been pulled from one of Twilight's spellbooks.
"So, this is it then?" Spitfire asked, giving Soarin a knowing look. "You're really taking Rainbow Dash to another world?"
Soarin nodded, his expression serious. "Yep. But don't worry, Spitfire. I'll make sure she comes back in one piece."
"Better," Spitfire said. "Or you're going to have to answer to me, mister."
Soarin gave her a salute, though his eyes sparkled with amusement. "Yes, ma'am."
"Try not to get too distracted showing off for Rainbow Dash in there, Soarin," Fleetfoot teased with a smirk.
Soarin rolled his eyes, smirking back at Fleetfoot. "Very funny, Fleet. I'll be just fine."
I nudged Soarin with her wing. "Yeah, Fleetfoot. He's gonna need to keep up with me, not the other way around." And everyone started laughing.
With all the goodbyes said and done, I took one last look around at my friends and teammates. I knew I'd be back, but there was something about leaving that still made me feel a little emotional—not that I'd let it show, of course.
The moment was finally here. Soarin and I stood side by side in front of the portal. I took a deep breath and then another for good measure.
"You ready?" Soarin asked, glancing over at me.
"More than ever," I replied, feeling a burst of adrenaline. "Let's do this."
Together, we stepped into the swirling magic, the world around us dissolving into a kaleidoscope of colors and light. The sensation was both exhilarating and overwhelming as if the magic was pulling us apart and putting us back together all at once.
Then, just like that, the colors faded, and I felt solid ground beneath my hooves again—except, they weren't hooves. Blinking a few times as my eyes adjusted to the brightness of our surroundings, I glanced down and froze.
My breath hitched in my throat as I stared at my... hands? I flexed my fingers, feeling the cool air against my skin, and wiggled my toes inside the strange boots I was now wearing. I was human. Completely, undeniably human. Instead of my usual coat of fur, there was smooth skin with a natural tone, just like a real human. And my wings... they were gone.
"Whoa..." I breathed, still in shock. I stumbled backward, almost tripping over a root. The landscape around me looked different from anything in Equestria—tall trees with shimmering leaves, strange flowers that seemed to glow faintly, and a sky that was just a shade lighter than the one I knew. It felt like everything had changed in an instant.
"Welcome to Enchancia," Soarin said, standing directly in front of me. His voice snapped me out of my daze. I looked up to see him smiling calmly, his stance relaxed as if he had known all along. He was in human form too, his skin tone just as real as mine, with a natural, lifelike complexion. Even without his wings, I recognized him immediately.
"You knew about this?" I asked, my voice trembling as I tried to process everything.
Soarin nodded, his eyes steady on mine. "I did. In Enchancia, we take on human forms. It's part of the magic here," he explained. "I probably should've warned you, but I thought it would be more fun this way," he added with a playful grin.
I glanced down at my hands once more, then looked back at him, my initial shock giving way to a mix of adrenaline and awe. "Guess I should've expected you to make this a surprise," I said, shaking my head with a half-smile. "But you know what? Bring it on."
