3. On the Way to McKenly Street
"Xavier Green, will you take Bridgette Smith as your wife, to have and hold her from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death, according to God's holy law and this solemn vow?"
"I do."
When Xavier answered the question with a loud voice, he vowed to heaven that he would love and protect his wife forever. And he intended to keep his promise even if he found out that his wife had $3 million dollars in debts.
Xavier worked so hard to pay the debts if that would only mean that he could protect his family in this way. Although he was so scared whenever he delivered corpses to the 53rd warehouse, he withstood it. He had to endure even if that meant he would eat thorns, or clench the blade around his hand as he abandoned his conscience.
'Let's wait for two years. Then I can pay all the debts,' he kept on cheering himself with these thoughts.
Xavier imagined a future full of hope.
Hope that he can surpass the struggles in his life.
And hope to live a normal life with a happy and contented family.
Yet there was a purpose in why an 'imagination' was called 'imagination.'
It reminds people that there are certain things which are far from reality.
Xavier realized that the moment Cesar killed him for a crime he did not do. He knew that he wouldn't be able to dream a good life, and even continue to protect his wife just like he pledged at their wedding.
Before his last breath, Xavier admitted the fact that he had finally lost everything.
But an odd occurrence will happen.
In the empty street of McKenly, a van quietly made its way. McKenly is a ghost town, and it's been years since people left the place.
Many feared visiting, especially at night. Aside from the eerie silence and darkness that the town prevails, there are rumors that ghosts have appeared recently in this area.
It is the perfect place for criminals to hide. Some even use this road to avoid the police cars which are patrolling around the main road.
Therefore, the driver of the van from Fugito's mansion chose this road on the way to the 53rd warehouse.
Delivering tonight's corpse wasn't on the schedule. That is why the driver used a different route to deliver Xavier's corpse.
"This place is scary," John, who was sitting in the passenger seat, complained.
"I don't have a choice. We need to deliver Xavier's body as soon as possible. The police are already patrolling the expressway," the driver, Bradport, explained.
"But does it have to be Mckenly Street? Look around! It seems that any time, a ghost will appear."
"Are you scared of ghosts?" Bradport said with a laugh.
"Then, should I love them?" John responded.
"You should. It is better to see a ghost than go back to the mansion and say that we failed to dispose of the body. The boss is scarier than any other ghost."
"I agree that Sir Cesar is scary. But this town was cursed! Didn't you hear the rumor? They say that if you bring a corpse into this town, then the corpse will stand up and eat us. Like a zombie!"
Bradport laughed so hard while driving.
"Are you telling me that Xavier will stand up and eat us?" When his laughs subsided, Bradport glared at John. "Hey! Stop being a wimp! That would never happen. You believe in folk stories too much."
Taking a deep breath, John looked behind the van and stared at the corpse inside the cadaver bag.
As the air turned chilly inside the van, John looked back at the road while clutching his hand on his seatbelt.
The moment John took his eyes off the corpse, the cadaver bag moved.
Certainly, the curse of the town is not true.
But tonight, a history will happen in the town. Something that might make everyone believe that the ghost of death does exist.
Inside the cadaver bag, Xavier's body began to move. His chest elevated up and down, as he faintly breathed.
Regaining his consciousness, Xavier opened his heavy eyelids.
The first time he opened his eyes, he saw nothing but pitch black.
'Is this life after death?' He asked himself.
But soon, he changed his mind.
The faint breathing from his lips, the numb flesh of his body, the sweats on his forehead, and the bumpy ride on the road. He heard and felt everything vividly, as if he was still alive.
'I am indeed alive,' he realized. 'But how did it happen?'
Xavier tried to remember what happened before he woke up in this place. He remembered going back to the mansion. Then, Cesar's wife accused him of raping her. Cesar did not believe Xavier and he forced him to swallow a weird drug.
'And that's how my life ended,' he thought.
While Xavier was processing the information in his head, he heard voices alternating between left and right.
"Xavier is an idiot. He thought that admitting the crime would save his family."
"Xavier worked as a driver for almost a year. He should have known that even if he died, Cesar would still search for his wife and son."
Xavier's eyes widened while listening to the men's conversation.
Just like what they said, Xavier died before in front of everyone. If that's really true, Xavier believes he is now inside the cadaver bag. And the men inside the car are on their way to deliver his body.
'How can a man, who has already died, be resurrected?'
Asking this question to himself, Xavier remembered the survivor he helped before. The corpse wasn't breathing when Xavier and Frederick put him inside the car. But when Xavier was on his way to transport the body to the 53rd warehouse, the corpse suddenly moved and regained his breathing.
'And now, it also happened to me,' Xavier realized.
He, then, figured out that he had to escape from this car as soon as possible.
'I need to get out here and look for my wife and son,' he planned.
Not moving inside the cadaver bag, Xavier listened very well to the sound of the car's engine.
Drivers of the corpses usually use small sedan cars to deliver the bodies. But since Xavier wasn't on the schedule, he figured out that they probably used different cars and different routes.
'A van,' Xavier guessed. 'The voices are far distant and the ground is hard and bumpy. I am in the van's trunk.'
Realizing that, Xavier slowly raised his hand while making sure that he wouldn't make unnecessary sounds and get caught. He tried to open the zipper of the cadaver bag but failed to do so.
'It can only be opened from the outside. Sh*t!'
"Do you really think that Xavier tried to rape our Madam?"
Xavier tilted his head in the direction of the voice. If he needs someone to open the zipper, then it should be one of the men in this car. From the beginning, Xavier could only hear two men's voices alternating from left and right. One from the driver's seat, and the other from the passenger's seat.
'That means, there are only two of them,' Xavier analyzed. 'There's no way they will bring many just to send my body.'
"Madam has concrete evidence."
"But I heard that Xavier accepted this dangerous job because he wanted to pay his wife's debts. What kind of husband would be ready to pay his wife's debts if he didn't love her?"
"That's right. You have a point. If I were Xavier, I would just sell my wife and live my own life."
When the two men suddenly talked about Xavier's wife, his mind went blank for a moment. It made him feel sick down to the core.
"Anyway, I am curious how Xavier's family fled before the boss looked for them."
"I heard it was Frederick who informed Xavier's wife to escape immediately."
"And why would he do that?"
"Isn't it obvious? Frederick had an affair with Xavier's wife."
Xavier clenched his fists as he held his friend. 'W-What did he say? My w-wife is having an affair with my friend?' He exclaimed inwardly.
"Really?! Frederick and Xavier's wife are in a relationship?"
"If not, then why would Frederick risk his life to protect Xavier's wife?"
"Well, that makes sense. After all, Xavier's wife was pretty. When Frederick saw her, he probably did something to her behind Xavier's back."
"That's a great ability. I should have asked Frederick's technique on how to take someone else's beautiful and sexy wife to bed."
The laughing of the two men rang in Xavier's ears. Great fury molten inside his body, as if he swallowed a ball of fire that ignited his whole system.
How could they accuse his wife and say that she had an affair with his friend?
Xavier knew more than anyone else that his wife wouldn't ever do that, and that his friend risked his life to protect his family. Yet, they dared to make such an awful joke!
In anger, Xavier's body trembled. Great resentment clouded his thoughts.
He really wanted to stand up right now, snap their necks like tree branches, pull their insides and kill them with his bare hands.
The rage he felt was too much for him to control. He endured it when everyone accused him and tried to kill me. But to hear insults from his wife and friend, Xavier couldn't endure this anymore!
With the ball of fury weighing on his fist, Xavier slammed the couch.
Thud!
John's shoulder tensed.
"H-Hey. Did you hear that?" John asked Bradport.
Driving, Bradport answered, "What?"
"A sound! I heard something behind us."
"You are imagining things."
"I really hea..."
Thud!
Finally, the two of them clearly heard the sound.
Then, silence cut through.
Bradport looked through the front mirror, while John looked back. They looked at each other and laughed nervously.
"It wasn't the corpse, right?" Bradport asked.
"Y-Yes. It can't be," John said in a quivering tone.
Thud!
Another sound echoed. And this time, it is louder than before.
Alarmed at the sound, Bradport parked the car beside the narrow road. There's no way he can continue driving the van without knowing where that weird sound came from.
"H-Hey, go and check the back of the van," Bradport told John.
Like a scaredy-cat, John felt goosebumps all over his skin. "Why me?! I only accompanied you tonight, but it was your job to deliver the corpse. You should go and check it out instead."
"You are really such a wimp. Alright! We will check it together! Damn it."
Bradport unbuckled his seat belt and went out of the car.
Not wanting to spend his time alone inside, John followed him outside.
The town is really quiet. They could only hear the sounds of the night cricket and the whooshing of the wind outside the van.
"Go and check what's wrong with our van. I will stand here and be a look out," Bradport suggested while standing in front of the van.
"You are really unfair," John complained.
"Why? We'd be really dead if the police saw us. Just go!"
Having no choice, John sighed while walking towards the back of the van. He got his knife out of his jacket as he went closer to the trunk.
Breathing heavily, John opened the trunk.
Knife in his right hand and flashlight in his left, he looked at the cadaver bag.
The corpse isn't moving.
He sighed in relief. John thought that maybe something was wrong with the van. Still, he had to check the corpse to be sure.
At ease, John opened the zipper of the bag. After pulling the zipper down, he pointed the light to the corpse. And as soon as he saw the face of the corpse, John's eyes widened.
"T-This is..." John stuttered in shock.
The van shook.
Standing in front of the van, Bradport looked behind him.
Was it his imagination that the van shook?
"John! You okay?!" Bradport asked.
But his partner did not answer.
"Why aren't you answering? Were you that scared that you peed in your pants?" Bradport teased, chuckling.
Only silence replied to his words.
Finding it odd, Bradport carefully walked to the back of the car. As he stepped closer to the trunk, he pulled out the knife from his suit.
"John?" he called.
There was an earthquake inside his body as he walked. His throat went dry and his hands turned icy cold. And when he arrived behind the car and saw nothing but the flashlight on the ground, his heart skipped a beat.
John disappeared.
Where did he go?
Slowly, Bradport picked up the flashlight on the ground.
When he bent down, the engine of the van started.
With wide eyes, Bradport looked at the red lights on the van's bumpers.
Who will start the car when there is no one inside it?!
Before Bradport could run and shout, the van reversed at full speed and hit him hard.
"Ack!"
His body fell on the ground and the wheel of the van rolled onto him.
Bradport felt all the pain in his body. From his broken arms, twisted legs and cracked skull on his head. Blood trickled from his nose and mouth.
Breathing heavily while swimming in his own blood, Bradport looked at the blinding headlights of the van.
The van's engine roared.
While looking at the van, Bradport remembered the curse in that place.
If you bring a corpse into this town, the ghost will haunt you forever.
It's not true. Bradport realized that if you brought the corpse, it wasn't the ghost who would haunt them. It's the corpse itself.
The van sped forward into him and the wheels took Bradport's last breath.
Then, the vehicle which was tainted with blood stopped.
And inside of it, the driver breathed heavily while holding the steering wheel with his trembling hands.
It is not a ghost, nor a corpse.
It is Xavier.
How did he succeed in killing the two men without difficulty?
After John opened the zipper of the cadaver bag, Xavier pulled him inside the trunk while covering his mouth. He strangled his neck to death until John lost consciousness. Then, Xavier closed the trunk of the van. He hurriedly jumped up on each seat inside the long van and reached the driver's seat.
Luckily, the key was still there.
He waited until Bradport stood behind the van and he hit him twice.
The first thing that came to Bradport's mind after he killed them was that he avenged his wife and his friend.
'They insulted my family. So they deserved this,' Xavier told himself while quivering in fear.
Then, the second is that he only did this to survive.
'I had no choice,' Xavier thought.
If he does not do this, they will kill him instead!
And what about his family?
"Bridgette. Simon. I need to save them," Xavier uttered before he drove the car forward without looking behind the men he killed.
'Everything will be alright. As long as I drive back onto the main highway, I can go and find my family. Then, I will save them from Cesar,' he told himself repeatedly while driving in the dark town.
Xavier does not know how the hell he came back alive and what kind of miracle happened that he survived. But if he saw his family alive, he thought everything would be okay.
They will escape.
He only needs to bring them to the port and get out of this country. And then...
'We will live happily together.'
Or so he thought.
It was so quick. But when Xavier glanced at the front mirror of the car, he was sure he saw something very odd.
Gradually, Xavier lifted his head and looked at the reflection on his face.
In the dim, he saw a man looking at him through the mirror.
His red eyes are sharp and fierce, like the mad wolf of the night. He has a face that he hasn't seen in his whole life.
When he blinked, the man blinked too.
When Xavier opened his mouth, the man mimicked both with the same movement for seconds.
For a moment, he remembered John's reaction when he saw his face. And now, he had the same expression.
A strange feeling rose in his chest. While looking at his reflection, he opened his lips and asked.
"Who... are you?"
Xavier's low voice that came from his mouth felt very unfamiliar.
When his gaze met the man's gaze, it was then I realized who he was.
'He is... me.'
The man with a sharp gaze and low voice was no other than him.
Xavier realized that his face changed into someone else.
Was it because of the drug he drank?
Or did his soul went to a different body?
Xavier could not answer the question.
"W-Why?" he mumbled in disbelief while looking at the mirror. "Why d-do I have this unknown face? Who are you?! Who are...!"
Suddenly, he felt a throbbing pain in my head.
"Ugh...!"
It was so painful that he thought his head would crack open!
"Ahhh!"
He held his head with one hand, while the other held the steering wheel tightly.
"Ahhh!"
'It's painful.'
It was as if a sword thrust inside his brain in and out.
Xavier was getting dizzy, and the surroundings have turned blurry. As he couldn't focus on the road, Xavier heard a deafening sound.
Beeeeeeeeeeep!
Loud horn coming from truck rang in his ears.
When he looked to the right, the headlights blinded his eyes.
Bam!
