Chapter 6: The Blank Eye
Duska
I wake to the sound of snoring, Sans is on the floor leaning against the couch with his eye sockets closed. I put my hand up to the cloth on my left eye, it's made of a soft material. I sit up and rub away the sleep from my right eye, noticing how good I feel despite the beating I received. I throw my legs over the side of the couch, making sure not to wake Sans up, and stand. My legs slightly wobble but they don't seem as stressed as they did yesterday. As I begin walking towards the kitchen the familiar feeling of magic stirs up into my hand, I quickly hide it inside my jacket before the light wakes Sans up. I can't let him see this, he'll ask questions. I begin to breathe deeply as it has helped in the past, the light simmers down until it's no longer glowing. What the hell was that? My magic's never done that before...
"duska?"
"Oh, Sans!"
I walk out from the kitchen to where Sans was looking at me with worry and tiredness. I give him a smile as I open the fridge and fish out a can of lemonade.
"you alright?"
"My body aches a little but it's nothing too bad."
"how about your eye?"
"Uh..."
Even when I move my right eye, I dont feel my left eye moving. I think that it might be permanently damaged.
"um!?! um what?"
"I don't really know."
"come here, i'll check it out."
I walk over as I take a sip from the can, the bubbles of fizz enter a cut in my mouth and I quickly set it down as my face scrunches up in pain.
"what happened?"
"I must have a cut in my mouth."
"let me see."
I show him the inside of my mouth which is a little awkward since i've technically only known him for week but he has quickly gained my confidence.
"two cuts, both on the meaty bits holding your teeth in place."
"Gums. Do you know much about human anatomy?"
"only the skeleton."
"I'd be scared if you didn't."
"heh heh. alright, show me your eye. tell me if it hurts."
He reaches behind my head and unties the cloth which then falls to the floor. His skeletal face makes it hard to know what he's feeling but the sudden lack of lights in his eyesockets scare me.
"Sans..."
"if... he ever comes back... he's gonna... have a bad time..."
"Sans..."
"who... the hell... would..."
"SANS!"
His lights return to their normal positions and Sans lets out a sad sigh, it may be as bad as I thought. He stands and walks towards an end table and pulls out a handmirror from inside.
"you sure you wanna see it kid?"
"My morbid curiosity will make me see it eventually."
Again he sighs, he returns to my side and hands me the mirror upside down. He watches intently as I flip it over to the mirror side, the first thing I notice is the massive cut beside my left eye. As I open it I focus on what should be my pupil, it's only a big red mess of... something. I close my right eye, blobs of color mix with red and white.
"Papyrus... saw this..."
"god damn it."
I look back at Sans who's got his head leaning against a wall, his fist quietly hitting it. I stand and hug him from the side, he returns it quickly.
"sorry i wasn't here kid."
"Not your fault, really. Neither Pap, you or me knew what was gonna happen yesterday."
He releases me and looks me directly in the left eye.
"you..."
"I can get surgery on it. Make it look more presentable at least."
"i'll pay for it kid, it's the least i can do."
"Wha... hm... thanks. Oh hey Sans?"
"yeah kid?"
"This pun could not be any... 'cornea'."
"heh heh... good one kid. do you want to keep the cloth on?"
"Yes please. I really don't mind it, but... i'd rather that Papyrus doesn't see it."
"thanks."
I kneel down as he re-wraps the cloth around my head, just in time as Papyrus bursts out of his room, spots me then runs into me with a hug. He made sure to not make it too tight, he's such a sweetheart.
"YOUR ALRIGHT!"
"Thanks to you Papyrus."
"I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WOULD NEVER LET YOU DOWN!"
"I know."
"NEITHER WILL SANS, EVEN THOUGH HE SLACKS OFF A BUNCH."
"both of those statements are true."
"ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE THE CLOTH OFF?"
"Uh..."
"bro, we need to have a quick talk."
"HUH? OK BROTHER."
Sans leads him into his room and closes the door behind him, giving me a sad look. I really don't want him to make his brother sad that he couldn't save my eye but I don't know what to do or say. I sigh as I pick up my phone and I dial in the local doctors to get my eye checked out.
"There... might be a chance to save it. I don't want them to look at me sadly every time they see it..."
"Duska, it would be easier if you told me how you got the injury."
"I did."
"Not who though."
"I said it was an ex. Now, can you do anything about it?"
The doctor sits down beside me and let's out a sigh. He looks at his computer monitor then back to me.
"There is a surgery... you won't get full vision back but your eye would look normal again."
"Perfect. I'll have it."
"B-but... I haven't told you-"
"I just don't want my friends to look sad every time they look at me."
"W-well... alright then. Just please read this COMPLETELY before you sign it, I don't want you to regret this."
"Alright, i'll return it within the week. Maybe day."
I take the printed sheet of the contract and leave the doctors office. I'll read it all, have the surgery and make sure the brothers don't freak out that i'm in hospital before telling them about having the surgery. With the cloth still wrapped around my head people look at me strangely but I find a peaceful park where I could read the contract and search up about the surgery itself. It apparently has a ninety-three percent success rate and the remaining seven percent is because of other eye problems, which I personally don't have. The contract states that it'll cost over fourty-thousand dollars but Sans said that he would pay for it no matter what...
"Hopefully i'm not putting him on the spot..."
I pull out a pen and sign my signature on all three pages, Duska Rose.
"Alright then. Hopefully I don't regret this, but I shouldn't considering the facts."
As I lay in the comfortable waiting bed for the doctors okay for the surgery I pull out my phone and leave a quick message for Sans.
Having surgery on eye. May not give me all my vision back but it will look normal again.
Be back home in a few days. Be good please.
Duska
P.S Please hide my artbooks from Papyrus, I may have been drawing him and i'm scared that he'll keep the book forever before i'm finished.
I press send as soon as the doctor walks into the room.
"Your tests have all come up negative. Are you ready?"
"As i'll ever be. Um... two monsters may come to the hospital."
"Leave their names with the nurse, they'll be allowed in considering you have no relatives to call."
He leaves the room and I feel slightly mad at him with his bluntness, but i'm too nervous to be mad for long. My biggest concern is that my two roommates may be mad at me for doing this without their consent... As the nurse injects the sedative I tell her about the possible visitors.
"Monsters huh? What are their names?"
"Sans and... and Papyrus. They're skeleton... brothers."
"Alright, i'll put their names on the list. Are you feeling ok?"
"Yeah... just a little..."
I never got to finish the sentance as the sedative puts me into an endless hallway of black dreams.
