Chapter 23: Breathless Void

Papyrus

I have filled twelve wheelbarrow, thirteen barrels, thirty two bottles and seven flower pots with snow. Sans and Duska will be so proud of me! Each thing with now in it is sitting just outside our home, if it goes inside it will just melt. Every now and again I see either my brother or the human leave the backroom to build another metallic thing to come out of the building, but I haven't seen them in a while. I decide to check on them because I would be a horrible monster not to!

"BROTHER! HUMAN! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, HAS FILLE-"

As I open the door I see the two of them sitting with their backs on the wall. Duska's head is resting ontop of Sans, it's adorable! I try my hardest to hold in a squeal as I close the door, I don't want to wake them!

"Hey skull face!"

"SHH! THEY ARE ASLEEP!"

"Says the one who's yelling!"

I quickly cover my mouth and begin moving the barrels closer to the back door since they would be too heavy for everyone else!

Duska

My head feels comfortable on whatever I had slept on, I don't remember falling asleep but I eventually had. I open my eyes for them to fall onto the machine in front of me, it's only half finished.

"hey kid, my skull comfortable?"

I sit up quickly to see that I was in fact using Sans' head as a pillow, his skull is surprisingly comfortable.

"Yeah... sorry..."

"no worries, i've been awake for awhile. it must be true that tall people sleep 'longer'."

I giggle quietly at his joke as I stand and stretch my limbs to be rid of the tiredness. Sans stands too but he heads out the door, most likely to check on Papyrus. I decide to head out as well, the metal room is damaging my ability to think. The house is the only thing lit in Snowdin which makes the place a little creepy. We both stop once we see the barrels, wheelbarrows, bottle and flower pots of snow, when Papyrus is set on something he certainly does it. As we enter the house we're immediately bombarded with questions, everyone is here. Frisk, Toriel, Asgore, Undyne, Alphys, Mettaton, Flowey and Papyrus are all sitting in the loungeroom.

"Are you two alright!?!"

"What have you two been doing!?!"

"D-do you n-need help?"

"Your a bad influence Sans!"

"Darlings! Are you both feeling ok?"

"I HAVE FINISHED GATHERING SNOW!"

Sans and I stand there as they continue overlapping each other. Sans suddenly grabs my hand and i'm teleported onto the couch.

"can we relax? we've been working for a while. you could say we've been working..."

"NO!"

"... a 'skele-ton'."

"I'M GOING TO GET MORE SNOW!"

Papyrus runs out of the house just as Sans turns the TV on, static is the only thing that comes on since the Underground no longer has any shows on.

"this is boring."

"Sans..."

Toriel slowly walks to us and stares into Sans' eyes.

"You've been working more than anyone has ever seen you before. Are you sure your alright?"

"yeah tor, i'm fine."

His voice says other wise, he sounds to be on the verge of tears.

"Papyrus isn't in here, you can talk if you need to."

Instead of answering he hides his face by putting his hoodie on over it. Toriel tries to reach out to him but he teleports to the door. Before he walks out my hand starts tingling, then it begins hurting.

"S-sans... m-my h-h-hand..."

He quickly turns around just as my hand lights up in aqua fire. But instead of pain, my mind finds peace in darkness.

Darkness around me once again, Gaster is standing before me. His usual smile seems weaker and more pained than before.

"Hello. Again. Duska."

"Why am I here again?"

"My. Son. Is. Giving. Up. Again."

"Sans? He is but... I won't let him."

"I. Know. You. Wont. He. Will. Dislike. My. Choice. To. Bring. You. Here. Again. But. I. Had. To. Know."

"Know what?"

"How. Much. He. Cares. About. You."

"How much he cares!?! He's probably worried about me right now!"

"Yes. Especially. Since. Youve. Stopped. Breathing."

"Wha-"

Halfway through my word my lungs got tight and I could no longer suck in air. I fall to my knees and try to grab as much air as I can, which is none. I look up at Gaster with a pleading face but I can clearly see that he isn't enjoying my suffering.

"Im. Not. Doing. This. You. Are."

My vision of him gets hazy but I remain looking at him, he may be the last being I ever see.

"Your. Magic. Is. Trying. To. Kill. The. Human. Side. Of. You. Either. Comply. Or. You. Will. Die."

My head spins and I fall to the black floor, i'm not sure if death has reached me or not. A hand touches my back and turns me onto my back, Gaster is no longer the monster looking down on me.

"Don't struggle and you'll be fine."

The monster has horns that spiral behind his head, eyes as blue as the night sky, his teeth are pointed but his face seems kind and gentle. His body is wrapped in what seems to be the same material mummies were once wrapped in, some parts of his body are exposed but only with a dull green skin to show. His legs and feet seem almost human, except for the missing parts of skin where you could see bone.

"Stop trying to breathe and it will return."

The monster begins to fade or it may just be me. I do as he says as I have nothing to lose, instead of trying to suck in air I hold my mouth. My arms are too weak to move to my nose so that I could hold it but the monster notices this and does it for me. Air fills my lungs but it's unusual as i'm not technically breathing.

"Keep going, you'll complete your goal. I will see you soon."

The void throws me away from the monster and back towards the world I belong.

I breathe in as much air as my lungs could hold, I feel incredibly light headed. I feel feet run along the floor which makes my head pound with each step. I open my eyes to see a pair of black eye sockets staring directly at me, only small white lights are visible within them.

"duska?"

I try to speak but i'm still trying to gather as much air as I can into my lungs. Sans lifts me so that i'm in a sitting position which helps a lot with breathing.

"damn it kid... stop doing that."

"S-sorry. Bad s-side to being a hy-hybrid."

"what are you saying? your magic attacked you?"

"Heh... g-good guess."

He walks off to go get the others while I quietly appreciate oxygen. The monster I saw in the void, he somehow seemed to not belong there. My thought disappears as the running footsteps of monsters scare it away, the one bad reason to have good friends is that their too loud.
