Chapter one

Enjoy :)

It was a regular Wednesday afternoon. Republic City High was as loud and busy as always. Students were rushing to their next period classes, chatting in the halls, teacher ordering students to move traffic along. It was a usual day.

As for three friends, they were heading to cafeteria.

Bolin led the trio, eager to get to their destination.

"I'm so happy it's lunch time", he said in relief. "Back in math class, my stomach started to sound like Chewbacca from Star Wars".

Asami shook her head at the guy and giggled.

"It totally did", she agreed, grinning. "I'm surprised no one else heard it but us. It was like super loud."

Mako smirked at the two.

"Maybe it's only heard because we're best friends and it's a best friend bond thing".

The three laughed at the idea. Bolin urged them to hurry up. He claimed he would starve to death if he didn't eat soon. The trio walked down the noisy hallway. They passed by a few jocks and cheerleaders. They were gathered in a group, like fish in a school, no pun intended, probably gossiping and hyping themselves up about a game coming up or whatever jocks did.

"Hey", one of the football players called out to them, getting their attention.

The trio stopped and looked at him. The jock smirked, looking at Asami. Asami rolled her eyes as the guy's eyes looked over her body. He was one of those jocks. Asami never cared to learn his name, since he never seemed like the type who would care about learning a girl's name before sleeping with her. Shallow. The jock leaned on his locker, probably thinking he looked so cool. He bit his lower lip, grinning in a cocky sort of way, his eyes glued to Asami.

"Hey, uh. You wanna hang out sometime? I've got a house all to myself for a couple days-".

"No", Asami cut him off, pretty harshly. "I'll pass".

Asami didn't wait for a response. She turned around, grabbed Mako and Bolin by the arms, and dragged them away. The boys looked at each other and rolled their eyes, unsurprised by what had just happened. Guys had always done this before. It was bound to happen when you're one of the most popular students in school. Highest in the social pyramid, one people who people wanted to be and wanted to know. That kind of thing. So, they got people's attention, even unwanted attention. Asami got attention from guys and girls alike.

Hook-up culture was extremely rampant in their district. Girls from freshmen to seniors, getting pregnant from their boyfriend or a hook-up, and Asami was not interested in getting pregnant by an immature, arrogant boy who couldn't even wipe his own ass properly. She had a little more common sense than that, and always gently turned them all down.

Asami felt like she could breathe once they got to cafeteria. The small group found their usual table and took a seat. Asami shrugged off her bag, dropping it to the floor at her feet as she sat down. Taking a deep breath, she let it out, letting all the irritation out of her body. She rested her chin on her hand.

"I hate when guys do that", she groaned, rolling her eyes into oblivion.

"Yeah. It's like they nothing better to do, but hey", Mako said.

Asami raised her gaze to meet his. Mako was very protective of her and Bolin, his younger brother. He had always had that parental instinct in him and it definitely came in handy at times. He sat hunched up, crossed arms resting on the cafeteria table.

"You know we've got you back", he said earnestly.

Bolin smiled. "Duh. We won't let guys talk to you like that. If anyone bothers you, you come find us or beat them up yourself".

Bolin held up his fists in a stance. He took a few shadow boxing swings at the air, as if hitting an invisible foe.

"I know you've got those Sato moves. Quick as a cheetah, strong as a bear, and deadly as a shark".

Asami couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of Bolin.

"Thanks. I needed that, you idiot", she said.

The guys smiled. Asami motioned for them to follow. They went to get into the lunch line. It was 7th period lunch, so there were a lot of people, some were from other sections trying to sneak in and get their turn early. Getting in line, they chatted as they waited..

"So", Asami spoke up to break the silence. "Anything new with you guys?"

"Nope", Mako said, bluntly as always.

Bolin took a moment. "Uhhh....".

He folded his arms, thinking. Asami placed a hand on her hip. She and Mako glanced at each other. They could only guess what would come out of Bolin's mouth this time. Bolin was the jokester in their triad after all. They each had roles in their group. Bolin was the prankster and jokester. Mako was the mom and super smart one. And Asami was the leader and the one that makes sure the guys stayed away from "the dark side". She was also the girl that could kick anyone's ass if need be. Luckily, she'd only needed to do that once.

Bolin tapped his chin. His face lit up suddenly as he had finally thought of something.

"Oh! I saw a ton of squirrels on my front yard yesterday".

Asami raised an eyebrow, a smirk on her lips. She huffed in amusement.

"Seriously? That's the latest update on Bolin's fun-tastic world? You usually have some funny stories to tell or something".

Bolin shrugged uselessly. "Well, not today".

Fair enough. Asami wasn't any different. "Yeah. Me neither. Same old, same old."

"Same, to be honest." Mako chimed in. "C'mon. Get your lunches".

After a few mishaps, an angry lunch lady and a few guys getting into a fight in the lunch line, they were finally able to sit outside with their food.

Asami sighed in relief when they found a spot to sit.

"I thought we'd be stuck in there all period. Now, we have to hurry up and eat."

"Imagine that", Mako said, grinning. "Stuck in line, not able to get your lunch, for the entire period".

Bolin groaned at the idea. "Don't even. I would die. You'd get pissed off and yell someone and Asami would walk right passed them and not give a shit".

The three bursted out laughing.

"Not give a shit", Asami cackled, clutching her stomach. "That's so true!"

Bolin nodded . They sat there laughing. They were probably getting stared at from somewhere but they didn't care. Laughter is the best medicine after all.

Asami caught her breath after minute, calming herself down. She was happy she had the guys around. They always made her laugh even when she didn't want to. She looked them to death. Picking up her pizza, Asami took a bite. Getting a taste of the totally cardboard and poor excuse for cheese, Asami realized just how hungry she was.

Bolin was all but inhaling his slice of pepperoni pizza. Sauce was all over his cheeks.

"But still", he said with a mouthful of food. "If you need us for anything, you know to call us up".

"Why even call?", Mako asked. "We'll already be with her. We don't exactly have anywhere else to be, bro."

Bolin made to reply, but couldn't find an answer. He pouted.

"Okay, that's true, but still. If need be and we're not there, call us up or just kick their ass and then call us so we can kick their ass with you".

Bolin crossed his arms, smirking.

"I just realized just how badass we are", he said, a bit of excitement in his voice.

Asami leaned forward on the table, smiling.

"Hell yeah we are", she agreed. "We'll kick anyone's ass if needed. Especially, if I see someone getting picked on by those morons."

The boys fisted pounded at that. Bolin seemed to only talk with food in his mouth. He took another bite of pizza and continued talking.

"Agreed. Or if someone needs us to in general. I see someone putting someone else in danger, we're kicking someone's ass".

It was true. They would kick someone's ass if someone needed them to. Asami was naturally protective of people. Asami has stood up for people in the past. Everyone in school knows not to mess with anyone in school in front of her. If you get caught hurting someone, and Asami catches you or finds out, you're in trouble.

"Aww".

Asami and Mako looked at Bolin. He had a disappointed pout on his face. He was looking down at an empty tray.

"I finished my pizza", he whined. "That was the good pizza, too".

Asami rolled her eyes. She ripped off part of her slice of pizza and dropped it onto Bolin's tray. When Bolin saw the piece on his tray, he gasped and looked up at Asami with the most exciting smile ever.

He looked like a kid on Christmas. The guy wrapped his strong arms around Asami's smaller frame and squeezed. Asami's breathing momentarily paused due to the force. Bolin worked out and could easily hurt her if he hugged too hard, so he was careful to give soft hugs when hugging anyone. Though this time it wasn't soft.

"You're the best", Bolin squealed, unaware of Asami's suffering.

Asami gave him a strained smile. "No problem. You can let me breathe now, Bo."

Bolin quickly let go when he heard her. Asami sucked in air, her lungs expanding. She looked up at Mako. The guy laughed at her expression. Bolin had accidentally tried to kill her.

Smiling at the innocent intentions of the younger brother, Asami shook off the slight shock. She eventually went back to her lunch, the guys doing so as well. When they finished eating, Asami checked her phone for the time. She was surprised by how little time had went by.

"Let's go to the field", she suggested suddenly. "We still got twenty minutes".

They threw their trash away. Picking up their bags, the trio walked out to the school yard. It was mostly empty since almost no one went out there during lunch at that time during school. Only the occasional loner was spotted in that area.

Asami, Bolin and Mako walked to their usual spot in the yard. A large cherry blossom tree by the edge of the field. It provided shade and it was nice to look at.

"So glad to get away from there", Asami told the boys, putting her bag down.

"You said it", Mako agreed, copying her.

The three laid down on the grass, forming a triangle. They looked up, lying on their backs, using their bags as head rests. They laid there for who knows how long, just vibing together. It was peaceful.

"You know", Bolin spoke up, getting their attention. "Nothing exciting ever really happens here."

Asami thought about it. She realized he was right. Their town was pretty boring, even though it was huge.

"I know right", Asami said. "You'd think more shit would go down in this huge city. Guess we're all just as boring as each other, or people are really good at keeping stuff hidden from the public."

Bolin sighed dramatically.

"Just for once, I want something new to happen to us. Something that'll change our lives for the weird. We're never doing anything exciting. Nothing new happens to us. It's just so boring, having the same shit every day. Same people, same routine."

"Hey!" Mako said, indigantly. "We're not boring".

"Maybe not," Bolin shrugged. "Just once, I want something different to happen with us. Maybe have some life changing event happen. But, you know, no death or tragedy. Something good."

"You know what I wish?" Mako spoke up.

"What??", Asami indulged him, turning her head towards the guy she considered an older brother.

"I wish we could have another person in our group".

"Why's that?", Bolin asked curiously.

Mako shrugged. "'Cuz you know, four is an even number. Plus, I want another person around. Maybe they'll be like us but better. Funny, loud, smart, maybe mysterious. Maybe....... someone that'll make Asami fall in love with them- ow!"

Bolin began to crack up, his laugh loud and booming. Asami had just hit him.

"Shut up!", she exclaimed.

Mako rubbed his arm, but he still smirked at her reaction.

"What? It's true".

Asami rolled her eyes. She smiled. Looking up at the sky, she sighed. The thought of dating someone wasn't a rare thing. A certain scenario was pushed into her head, thanks to the many books she'd read in her life.

"I kinda wanna be someone's hero", she pondered outloud. "I know it sounds corny and stupid-".

"Asami", Bolin interrupted. "Wishful thinking is never stupid. Plus, we don't judge in our group. Remember that. But go on".

Asami shrugged.

"I just....... people, other than you guys, think I need to date someone who will protect me and be my bodyguard and be there to comfort me when I'm sad and do all these cute things for me."

Her gaze zoned out as she talked. "But I want someone that I can do those things for them. I don't want anyone to be my knight in shining armor. I want to be someone's knight for a change."

Mako quietly whistled. "Very thought provoking. That was deep."

Asami blushed, having admitted her personal daydream fantasy for the first time ever. "Just had that on my mind for a while now, I guess".

"Well who knows", Bolin said, grinning. "The person we're looking for is probably coming in the near future for all we know. That's why I like to keep my eyes and ears open. Who knows who'll be our new addition to our little ragtag group. Maybe they'll be a girl. I hope they are. Then they could be Asami's princess needing to be rescued".

Asami chuckled at the idea. "Yeah. The damsel in distress and having three knights wearing jeans, flannel shirts, holding minecraft swords".

The three laughed. A bunch of dorks, is what they were.

"But seriously", Bolin said suddenly. "Imagine us saving someone's life. That would be mind-blowing".

Asami personally hadn't pegged them as the type. Them? Heroes? Perhaps in another life.

"Wishful thinking, bro", Mako mused, clearly humored. "Wishful thinking".
