Near Laventie lies an apt portrait of war (Ajay-Kumar)
The findings of a Richebourg excavation
Has been brought to the Laventie Military Cemetery
To be buried
And be the next gifts to the soil
Four soldiers- two Indians, a Brit and a German
The Indian army is to send the major of the Garhwal Rifles,
The regiment to which the two unsung heroes were identified by their insignia,
Two bagpipers of the regimental pipe band,
And Colonel Nitin Negi, grandson of Late Naik Negi
Who received the Victoria Cross for his heroism in the battle of Festubert and belonged to the 39th Garhwal Rifles, same as the ones excavated
I wonder if the Victoria Cross could've identified his fellow countrymen
From the one he fought for and with and the one he fought against
From the indifferent dirt
(That will be brought back to India, symbolically)
And a statue in memory will be erect
At Aligarh at the cost of 1, 20,000 Rupees,
Could this money be sent by DeLorean money order service to the mothers of the lost boys found?
Who may well have had their sons stolen from them?
In parts of rural India not on the cartographer's mind,
To fight foreign wars in far foreign lands
That are now found as any buried body
And are now the characters of an apt portrait of war.
A/N- Remains of four soldiers who fought World War I in France and found in an excavation last year will be buried at the Laventie Military Cemetery.
The soldiers have been identified, one British, one German and two Indian soldiers, I was provoked by the fact that all of them, despite battling for different sides were reduced to dust just like any other body. makes me question all the wars and violence over the differences even after the fact that all that will remain of us is dust
