Time Travel Troubles, a crossover one-shot.
Author's Note Please read this, otherwise you may be confused. This one is a crossover with my favourite Stephen King book 11/22/63. I know he is known for his horror novels, but that's not all he does and 11/22/63 is not Horror, It's a time travel novel where the main character goes back in time to save J.F.K. from being assassinated. There is also a TV show loosely based on the book, but I couldn't even finish watching the first episode.
Jake Epping walked away from the dead man, whose card was now black. He was determined to succeed in the mission he had been given by his now-dead friend Al Templeton. He didn't bother stopping by the Kennebec fruit for another root beer, instead, he was planning to buy the sunliner again. Before he could, someone was in front of him. He didn't want to believe that the young man had just appeared there out of thin air, but he couldn't think of any other explanation for his sudden appearance.
Looking at the young man, Jake saw that he looked to be in his early twenties, and was dressed in modern clothes rather than what was normally worn by men in the fifties, and he had gold eyes that had flecks of green In them. After Jake noticed all that, The young man spoke, and Jake noticed he also Spoke like a young man from Jake's own time.
He said, "You Need to Stop and go home, "Jake was about to protest and ask the guy who he was, but he didn't get a chance as the guy continued, "I am sorry about your friend's death, and I understand that you wish to honour him by carrying out his mission for him, but find some other way to honour Al, staying in this time and altering it further will only cause more harm than good,"
"Jake stared at him for a moment before speaking, "Who are you? and how in the hell do you know so much about me and Al, and what I am planning to do!"
Jake could tell from his expression that the guy was amused, but he replied," True I never did introduce myself. My name is Perseus, however, if I were to explain how I know so much about you and your friend I'm not sure you would believe me,"
Jake replied, "Try me, I did just get here through a passage that took me from 2014 to 1958,"
Perseus chuckled, "Fair enough, if you really want to know I will tell you if it means you will give up this foolish crusade of yours and go home. Once you are home I will remove the passage for good so no other mortals can find it again,"
Jake caught his use of the word mortals and said," What do you mean Mortals? There's no way you are immortal, I'm starting to think you might just be crazy,"
"I don't think you actually believe that Jake, I already know enough about you to know that you are too smart for that. You can tell I'm not from this time either, and I'm sure you noticed that I didn't get here by any mortal method. I could force you to leave this time, but I would rather you do it of your own free will,"
Jake was about to speak up again when Perseus continued, "Jake I know you aren't a particularly religious man, but gods are real-"
sounding incredulous, Jake interrupted, "Are you saying you're god? You don't look much like him,"
Perseus chuckled, "No I have already told you my name, I wasn't lying about that. I don't actually know if the god from the Bible exists, I was talking about pagan gods, mainly the Greek gods. It may be hard to believe but they are very real and I am one of them. The only one of my domains that matters to you right now is time, since that is the one you were planning to mess with, and that is why I am here now to stop you.
I don't know exactly how things would change if you were to be successful in your mission to save John F. Kennedy, but because I am the god of time I know how it works enough to understand that attempting it is a bad idea and I needed to stop you just like I and the fates did with your friend. I am not certain if they gave him the cancer, I know that I didn't because that is not within my power, and even if it was I doubt I would have resorted to those kinds of methods to stop him, but I suspect the fates wanted him stopped one way or another, and they decide what happens in people's lives and I'm sure they don't want anyone messing with the past that they planned out. I am a kind and forgiving deity most of the time but trust me, the fates may look Like grandmas, but you don't want to anger them. They could decide you should die tomorrow and it would happen, or they could make the rest of your life terrible.
Sometimes you don't even have to anger them for them to decide your life should suck. Take my word for it, Jake, my life certainly hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows, I have only been a god for a little more than a year, before that most of my life sucked majorly."
Jake wasn't sure if he believed this Perseus or not, he didn't know all that much about the Greek myths so he honestly couldn't confirm or deny anything Perseus had said. Despite that, he just had a feeling that he should believe what Perseus had said about the Fates. He decided he needed more proof that this Perseus was really who he said he was before he would give up his mission and leave.
Sure Jake couldn't explain how Perseus got here or how he knew so much about him and Al, but if Perseus truly was a god, that definitely explained it, but Jake was reluctant to give up his mission, he felt like he would be chickening out, and Letting Al down, So he decided he wanted more proof than that. once he made that decision he spoke, "I need more proof you are what you say you are before I will agree to leave and go home,"
Perseus sighed, "You are determined, I have to give you that, I think there is something I can do that will convince you,"
After that, he seemed to be focusing, and as Jake watched Perseus' appearance changed, his black hair turned brown his gold eyes turned blue, and his clothes became ones that the ancient Greeks themselves might have worn, over them he wore Ancient Greek style armour, and a sheathed sword hung from a belt at his waist. Moments after that happened his appearance went back to normal. After that, he said, "Most of the gods don't actually dress like that anymore, they've adapted with the times, I just thought changing my appearance would help convince you. Now, try and move,"
Jake was confused but did what Perseus asked, only to find that he couldn't, "How are you doing that?" He asked, a bit nervous now.
Perseus replied, "I'm the Greek god of Time, so I can manipulate time in many ways without harming the timeline, but even I wouldn't risk attempting to change events that are long past like you and your friend were planning to. You can move again by the way,"
"What about him?" Jake asked, Pointing at the dead black card man.
Perseus frowned, "I honestly don't know everything, all I know is that he was given the task of guarding the passage, he's had the job since before I was given mine. It seems that the task was too hard for him and he resorted to alcoholism to cope with your friend ignoring his warnings. Every change made to the timeline also affected him, even your friend coming back in time to buy meat for cheaper prices.
Those trips may not have affected much, but it was enough to harm him, and since I took on my position I have also sensed every change that you and your friend have made. Now enough is enough, will you go home of your own free will or do I have to make you go home?"
Jake sighed, he felt like a child again, getting scolded by his parents for doing something he shouldn't have done. Much like his parents, Perseus had really only given him one option, go home, and it would happen whether he wanted to or not. He turned and went back to the passage. Once he was back in Al's diner, he sat down and sighed again. He muttered, "I'm sorry Al, I was going to try, but a literal god stopped me. I believe he was one because I can't explain the things he could do any other way. I think you would understand,"
He sat there for a while, eventually, he decided to see if Perseus actually closed the passage, sure enough, the restaurant's storeroom was just that, and there was no longer a passage back to 1958.
Percy had noticed Al Templeton going back in time to buy meat for cheaper prices right after he became a god and received the domain of time, but at first, he left him alone because the man's actions didn't really affect the timeline much. It was only when Al began experimenting with changing past events that Percy knew the mortal needed to be stopped. Admittedly, he wasn't able to do much at first because he was still learning how to use his new powers, but he also suspected that the fates were interfering in an attempt to stop the mortal. He suspected they had succeeded considering that he had to give up his experiments after he got incurable cancer. Percy had been slightly frustrated when he realized Al had told his friend about the passage to the past. By that point, Percy was familiar enough with his powers that he felt confident enough that he could go back in time and talk to the mortal, rather than letting the fates possibly kill him too.
Although Jake Epping proved to be rather stubborn and determined, Percy knew he had to make him leave the past whether he wanted to or not. Percy couldn't blame the mortal for wanting to honour his friend, but there were better ways to do it than messing with the timeline. After he was sure Jake was back in 2014, Percy closed the passage using his powers, and then time travelled back to Olympus in 2014.
He couldn't help but wonder how things might have changed if he had let Jake carry out his mission to save John F. Kennedy. He didn't know, but like he had told Jake he was sure it wouldn't have turned out well. Messing with time and changing past events was something even he was hesitant to do, and it wasn't just because it would piss off the fates, it was mainly due to the fear that the changes would not end for the better. He would love to go back and save some of his friends from dying, but it was way too risky. He pushed those thoughts from his head, wanting to think of something more positive, but instead, his mind wandered to Amber and he sighed, missing her.
