The New Girl: Chapter 11
After school that day, Kota was waiting at the public library just a few blocks away from Fitzgerald Prep. Cody had his driver drop him off out front. He looked around and examined the old library before walking in. No one was inside other than the librarian.
"Excuse me. Have you seen anyone come in recently? I'm supposed to be meeting someone here." Cody asked.
"Are you Mr. Rhodes?" The librarian asked.
"Yeah, that's me." Cody told her.
"Kota's downstairs waiting for you." The librarian told him.
Cody looked over and saw the stairs.
"Thank you." Cody said.
He made his way down the stairs, trying to ignore the fact that each step he took felt like the stairs were going to cave in. In the basement of the library, Kota was sitting at a table, looking over Cody's essay's again.
"Is there a tornado warning I don't about?" Cody asked as he finally made it downstairs.
Kota looked over at him for a moment.
"What?" He asked.
"Why the hella re we in the basement?" Cody asked.
"I figured you wouldn't want anyone seeing you with me." Kota told him.
"No offense but I don't think anyone even knows this place exists. Hell, I thought it got tore down years ago." Cody said as he made his way over to the table.
Kota looked at him with reluctance.
"Did you look over the papers I sent?" Cody asked as he took off his jacket.
"Yeah. They're horendous." Kota told him honestly.
Cody stared at him for a moment before letting out a laugh of disbelief.
"What? Don't tell me you're surpirsed. You wouldn;t have asked for my help if you didn;t know you're horrible at writing." Kota added.
"Damn. You don't hold anything back do you?" Cody asked.
"Unlike some people, no.. I don't." Kota said in reference to his ex-boyfriend.
Cody paused for a moment and got situated in his seat.
"Your essay's are literally just reviews of the books. Not even that really because it's obvious you didn't read any of them, you just looked up summaries online." Kota told him.
"Do I look like I have time to read?" Cody asked.
"I think you can make time." Kota assured him.
Cody shook his head.
"Look, the point of these essay's is to show that you can comprehend the material. Yes it helps if you have at least average writing skills, which I think you have. But if you're not even reading the stories then it's almost pointless. You need to read the books and think about them. You've got to think about the story and what message it's sending." Kota told him.
"And what if I do read one of those books and what I write is wrong?" Cody asked.
"There really isn't a wrong answer in these essay's. The beauty in reading is that everyone takes away their own things from books. It's not one size fits all. Based on each person's own experiences in life, they're going to connect to different lessons in a story. All you need to do in these essay's is have an opinion. You need to understand your own thoughts on the book and explain them in writing. That's all Mr. Wheeler is asking for." Kota said.
Cody took a deep breath.
"I'll pay you triple what we agreed if you just write the essay's for me." Cody suggested.
Kota laughed.
"No way. I'm not getting expelled for you of all people." Kota told him.
Cody let out a sigh of frustration.
"Whatever. What's the plan?" Cody asked.
Kota pulled out two books.
"The next essay is on The Kite Runner. We're going to read the first three chapters." Kota told him.
Cody was immediately regretting asking Kota for help.
"You're going to make me read right now?" Cody asked.
"Yes." Kota said.
"Is this really part of the whole tutoring thing or are you just torturing me for being an ass to you all the time?" Cody asked curiously.
Kota thought to himself for a moment.
"Maybe a little bit of both." He said with a slight grin.
Cody couldn't help but find Kota's tactics to be a little impressive.
"Can I at least order something to eat? I'm starving." Cody told him.
"Fine. But hurry. I'm only giving you a half an hour to get those chapters read." Kota told him.
Cody hurried to pull out his phone and order food.
Across town, Becky and Sasha had just finished having lunch in the mall. They were walking together, with milkshakes in hand.
"So.. What's your thing, Ace?" Becky asked.
"My thing?" Sasha said.
"Come on.. Rich, daddy's girl from the Westside.. There's no way you don't have a thing." Becky told her.
"What kind of thing do you mean?" Sasha asked.
"You've gotta have some kind of secret." Becky told her.
Sasha thought to herself for a moment.
"Come on." Sasha said as she grabbed Becky's hand and lead her into Victoria's Secret.
"Let's look around for a second." Sasha told her.
Becky let out an intriguing smile as Sasha began browsing around.
"Do me a favor? Distract the girl behind the counter." Sasha told her.
Becky looked Sasha up and down with curiousity. Sasha motioned her on. Becky put her hands in her pockets and made her way up to the counter.
"Excuse me." Becky said as she got the attention of the attractive blonde. "I need some help picking out lingerie for my girlfriend."
"Of course, do you know what your looking for?" The woman asked.
"Well.. the thing is.. You and her actually have very similar body type. You both have that beautiful, sexy blonde hair.. I was hoping you could ppick out something in your size? Something you'd like? And I'm sure my girl would love it." Becky suggested.
The stunning blonde let out a blushing smile and lead Becky to the lingiere section. Sasha casually walked throughout the store.
"Something like this would be my taste." The woman from behind the counter told Becky.
"Leather.. I like it. And that's your size?" Becky asked.
"Mhm." The woman told her.
"Maybe you should try it on for me? Just to make sure?" Becky asked with a smirk on her face.
Sasha looked over to Becky as the woman went into the dressing room. Becky got the signal and made her way back to Sasha. The two girls walked out of the store with confidence.
"Did you really get that woman to try on lingerie for you?" Sasha asked in disbelief.
"What can I say? Women find me irresistable." Becky assured her.
"Oh is that right?" Sasha asked.
Becky gave her a wink. Sasha just laughed and pulled out a Victoria Secret perfume from her purse.
"Damn. So shop-lifting's your thing, huh?" Becky asked with an impressive look.
"Maybe." Sasha shrugged her shoulders.
At the library, Cody was struggling to finish the third chapter of The Kite Runner.
"I'm done." Cody said as he wiped his eyes.
"You sure? Because I think you fell asleep there for a few minutes." Kota commented.
"I finished the chapters, okay?" Cody told him.
"Okay, what was it about?" Kota asked.
"It basically just introduced the main character Amir. It showed how him in the present, living in San Francisco then he saw the kite and it kind of flashed back to when he was a young boy in Kabul." Cody told him.
"Okay, good.. What else?" Kota asked.
"There was something about his friend Hassan and how neither of them had mothers. Hassan's mother left after he was born and there might of been a mention of her sleeping with someone? I can't really remember." Cody told him.
"And what do you think about the main character, Amir?" Kota asked just as Cody's phone buzzed.
"Hold that thought, food's here." Cody said as he hurried up the stairs.
Kota let out a deep breath and checked his phone for a moment.
"I'm hoping you'll reconsider my offer from last night?" Cody asked as he carried down a large pizza.
Kota looked up from his phone with a bit of curiosity as Cody sat back down.
"I got a pepsi and sprite. Which one do you want?" Cody asked.
Kota watched with for a moment, not exactly sure what to think of the situation.
"Um.. Sprite's fine." Kota told him.
"I'm so hungry, all I could think about while reading was food." Cody said as he rolled up him sleeves and dug in to the pizza.
It was when Cody took a bite that he noticed Kota just staring at him.
"What?" Cody asked with pizza hanging out of his mouth. "Are you gonna eat?" Cody asked.
Kota looked at the pizza and hesitated for a moment before grabbing a piece.
"So what were you saying before?" Cody asked.
"Um.. I was asking about your thoughts on the main character." Kota reminded.
"Oh, right. Amir.. I don't know, he kind of sounds like a bit of a jerk. Wasn't there something in there about him slingshotting walnuts at a dog? And it kind of seemed like Hassan let him walk all of him." Cody said.
"Yeah, that's right. You see a lot more once we get further into this book but a lot of it is Amir looking back at his past with regret." Kota told him.
"Have you read this before?" Cody asked.
"A few times, yes. It's one of my favorite books." Kota told him.
"So what, you just read all the time?" Cody asked.
"Yes, kind of. I really like to read. It's amazing to me how I can connect the book I read to real life. It give you a lot of perspective on things, especially when you're reading from another person's point of view." Kota told him.
"How do you mean?" Cody asked as he wiped his mouth with a napkin.
"It just helps you understand people better, that's all. Like you, for example. I know the reason you go out of your way to make me feel like shit is because your jealous that I'm not afraid to be myself." Kota said truthfully.
Cody paused for a moment.
"The reason you seem to have this hatred for my friends and I is because we don't have the same expectations from people as you do. Given your last name, you're forced to walk a straight line and not make any mistakes. You don't like who you're forced to be so you take it out on us." Kota went on.
Cody stared him dead in the eyes as both anger and embarrassment came over him.
"You don't know anything about me, Ibushi." Cody assured him.
"You're right.. I don't know you." Kota told him.
Cody furrowed his eyes in confusion.
"The reason I let people like you walk all over me is because I think I deserve it. Even though I know why you do it, part of me still thinks I deserved to be punished for being who I am so I just allow it. I don't stand up for myself.. I don't stop people like Kenny from breaking my heart over and over again because I really do think I deserve it." Kota confessed.
Cody was a little surprised by what Kota had just told him.
You don't know me either, Rhodes." Kota told him.
"That's why when we made this deal you didn't ask for me to leave you alone? You only asked for me to leave your friends alone.." Cody asked.
"I care much more about them then I do myself." Kota said.
"That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." Cody said bluntly.
Kota let out a small laugh. Cody then let out a chuckle of his own.
Across town, Sasha and Becky had made their way up to the rooftop they'd once snuck up to. It was getting late and the sun was setting over the city.
"So, I take it you're liking things here?" Sasha asked.
Becky thought to herself for a moment.
"I think things are good. But that scares me a little bit.." Becky told her.
"Because of that whole thing where you think no one will ever want you?" Sasha asked.
Becky let out a laugh.
"You actually listened to me that day?" Becky asked.
"Every word." Sasha told her.
Becky held a smile for a moment.
"Kathleen and August are amazing.. I mean after all the shit I pulled when I first got here they didn't budge at all." Becky said.
"Yeah.. You really pushed it with them." Sasha laughed.
"Then there's Kenny.. He tries a little too hard to be everyone's big brother but it been nice knowing that I have someone looking for me." Becky told her.
Sasha nodded her head in approval, remembering all the times that Kenny had been there for her.
"And then Alexa.. She's an angel.. She's like the sister I never knew I wanted." Becky went on.
Sasha gave Becky a sympathetic look.
"So what are you still afraid of?" Sasha asked.
"Messing everything up.." Becky began to say as she looked back over at Sasha. "Hurting the people that I care about."
Sasha reached her hand forward and tucked Becky's hair behind her ear.
"Maybe for once in your life you should give yourself a chance. Stop assuming you're going to do something wrong and allow yourself to be happy." Sasha said as she looked into her eyes.
Becky felt her heart grow warm as she glanced down at Sasha's lips.
"Don't you deserve to be happy?" Sasha asked.
Becky leaned in as Sasha held her lips to hers. The two girls closed there eyes and pressed their lips against one another's, sharing a slow kiss. Sasha looked into Becky's eyes as she pulled away.
"Like I said.. I'm irresistible." Becky joked as she and Sasha continued to look into each other's eyes.
Sasha let out a small laugh while Becky admired her.
At Seth's house, he was about to head out of the house as checked his phone, waiting for Becky's text that the coast was clear.
"Headed out, boy?" Ryan asked with a slur in his voice.
Seth froze for a moment before looking over to find his father sitting in the chair in the corner of the living room with a glass of scotch in hand.
"Dad?" Seth asked with disappointment in his voice when he realized his father was drunk.
"You and Dean don't seem to be as close as you used to. I take it you messed that up?" Ryan asked.
"You're drunk." Seth said his eyes began to tear up.
His father stood up and took a sip out of his glass.
"You know.. Renee is growing up to be quite the young woman." Ryan began to say.
"Please don't talk about her." Seth warned him.
"Is that what happened with you and Dean?" Ryan asked.
Seth just shook his head in disapproval of his father's behavior.
"I always knew she'd get between the two of you one day." Ryan said before taking another sip.
"Stop." Seth tried to tell his father as his face grew red with anger.
"I mean hey, when she got out of the car this morning I'll admit I had a few dirty thoughts mysel-." Ryan began to joke before Seth suddenly punched him in the face.
Seth watched with anger and tears in his eyes as his father fell to the floor in laughter.
"Oh, I guess I struck a nerve there with that one." Ryan continued to laugh.
"Seth? What's going on?" His mother, Linda asked as she made her way downstairs.
Seth just stood there with a painful look in his eyes as his father tried to stand back up.
"Ryan, I thought you agreed to leave?" Linda asked him.
Seth looked to his mother in confusion.
"I just wanted to say goodbye to my boy before I left." Ryan told her.
"You mean you wanted to have a few drinks?" Linda asked.
Ryan dropped his glass and took a deep breath.
"You want me gone? I'm going." Ryan told her with a few tears in his own eyes.
Seth looked down shamefully as his father walked out the front door.
"Why is he drinking again?" Seth asked his mother.
Linda took a deep breath and hesitated to speak.
"I asked your father for a divorce." Linda told him.
Seth looked at her in disbelief.
At Renee's house, she was just arriving back home on her bike from the record store when she saw Dean sitting on her front steps.
"Hey, James Dean." Renee joked as she got off of her bike.
"Hey." Dean said.
"Everything okay?" Renee asked, walking towards him.
Dean looked up at her for a moment before she sat down beside him.
"You know I like you, right?" Dean said suddenly.
"What?" She asked.
"I've had a thing for you for like ever, okay? It's kind of obvious. Almost as obvious that you're still in love with Rollins." Dean told her.
"Dean-." Renee began to say.
"I'm just letting you know that I like you." Dean said as he looked over at her. "I really, really like you."
Renee looked into his eyes, trying to think over what he was saying.
"So if you don't want to do this then you really don't have to. But at the very least I'd like it if we can be friends again." Dean told her.
Renee let out a smile.
"And what if I do want to do this?" Renee asked.
Dean's eyes light up in surprise.
"Well.. Then.. I think I'd be cool with that too.." Dean tried to be smooth.
Renee let out a small laugh before leaning in and kissing Dean on the lips. Dean's brain stopped as she pulled away.
"Uh.." Dean let out.
"Let's try that whole date thing again sometime, okay?" Renee asked.
"Yeah.. Okay." Dean let out a slight smirk.
Suddenly, Seth pulled up in front of Renee's house. She stood up as he got out of the car.
"Seth?" Renee asked.
He stood on the sidewalk with tears in his eyes as she rushed to him. Dean stood up and watched as Renee wrapped her arms around Seth and comforted him with a hug.
"Are you okay?" Renee asked him.
Seth buried his face in her shoulder and let himself go.
"They're getting a divorce." Seth told her.
Renee closed her eyes in disappointment when she realized Seth was talking about his parents.
Dean watched as Renee and Seth continued to hug rather intimately as if they were a couple.
"Ambrose?" Seth asked when he finally saw Dean standing there.
Dean waved awkwardly before walking over.
"You good?" Dean asked.
"It's my parents.. They're getting a divorce.. And my dad.." Seth tried to tell him with a crack in his voice.
"The drinking again?" Dean asked.
Seth immediately burst out in tears again. This time Dean hugged Seth, remembering the pain his father had put him through in the past.
"It's okay, man. We're here for you." Dean told him.
Renee smiled at Seth and Dean, remembering just how close the two of them used to be. She finally joined in and made it a group hug between the three old friends.
Alexa was just getting out of the shower when she checked her phone to find a text message.
"Dinner this weekend?"
-Finn
She let out a genuine smile and began to blush.
The next morning was a rather eventful one. Kenny was sitting with his friends on the steps outside when he got a text.
"Hate to say I told you so."
-Anonymous
Kenny looked closer to find an attatched photo and he couldn't believe his eyes. It was a photo through Becky's bedroom window of her and Seth. Kenny threw down his phone furiously when he saw Seth walking down the sidewalk with Renee. Roman, Cody, Miz Sasha all watched with concern as Kenny approached Seth.
Before Seth could even say anything, Kenny punched him across the face. Everyone outside turned their attention to the altercation. Dean rushed over as Kenny punched Seth again. He grabbed Kenny's hand, stopping his from doing any more damage. Roman began to get up but Cody stopped him.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Renee asked as she bend down to help Seth.
Kenny's breath was heavy as he watched Seth wipe the blood from his mouth.
"I told you to stay away from her." Kenny told him.
Becky looked on with a look of guilt on her face.
"Kenny-." Seth tried to say as Renee pieced together what Kenny was insinuating.
"No! You and me.. we're done! Stay the hell away from me and from my family." Kenny yelled harshly. Kota looked down unfortunately, knowing that Kenny was focusing a lot of undeserving anger towards Seth.
Miz walked over in hopes of calming Kenny down.
"Hey man-." Miz began to say.
"You too! You lied to me! We're done." Kenny told him before storming off.
Kota gave Kenny a worrisome look as he passed by.
"Are you okay?" Dean asked as he and Renee helped Seth up.
That's when Seth's phone buzzed.
"So sorry to hear about your parents getting a divorce. Too bad your fwb forgot to tell you about your mom's affair. I wonder what else Becky's not telling you?"
-Anonymous
Seth looked across the way at Becky with disbelief. Renee had seen the message and put two and two together. Sasha seemed to have done the same thing.
Suddenly, five police cars sped onto the schools campus and surrounded the front of the school. April who had just arrived to school looked at Roman as he stood up quickly, ready to run.
"Rebecca Lynch?" An office asked as he approached Becky.
"Yes?" She said.
"You're under arrest for the kidnapping and murder of Paige Bevis." The officer said as he began to handcuff her.
Everyone looked around in shock as Alexa began to call her mother.
