The Apocalypse
I was standing infront of the boarded up window in the kitchen, following with Owen and Father. Everyone else was gathering the rest of our stuff and taking it to the cellar. It has been 3 days since the tornado and somehow, half the world is already falling to their graves because of the zombies.. Nobody knows how it started and the government is working their butts off looking for a cure, but non have been made..
Since the first few zombies that have been wandering our property have been seen we've been taking turns with lookout to make sure that nothing gets near home. We've only had a few close calls but they weren't to bad, only coming close enough to the dogs but not being able to attack them.
Yesterday mum gave me a notebook to write in, something like a diary.. But I will use it to mark the days and things that have been happening throughout the long days. I decided that after my watch I would write in the book what to look out for and the days since we started our watch..
Day 3 since the ?apocalypse?
We've only encountered maybe four of the sick. Owen, Father, and I have been switching watch every three hours, so in between we can get the much needed sleep. Owen nearly shot me while I was reloading for he decided to practice aiming like right at me.. Father slapped him and took his gun for the meanwhile so we didn't have any accidents. Mother ordered us to keep Johnny and Zoe away from the windows and guns and of they went near we could send them to their rooms so they wouldn't hurt themselves, which luckily never happened. After a box of bullets wasted we finally learned that shooting the sick anywhere but the head does no critical damage which gives them a better advantage if you didn't know..!
Father tapped me on the shoulder and snapped me out of my writing faze. He asked Owen to come over to us so we could discuss our schedule.
"So It's 10:30pm right now and I think it would be best if you all headed to bed. I will be lookout for about 3 hours then I'll switch with one of you, alright?" He explained.
"Yep, got it." Owen and I nodded sarcastically while sharing disgusted looks.
I smiled evily then yelled, "DIBS OUT!" While pinning a finger to my nose.
Owen growled then sighed heavily, "what ever.." He mumbled angrily.
"That's enough you too! Boy you can be childish sometimes Paige." Father sighed, placing a hand on his forehead.
I smiled then shot up to thumbs up and winked, before trotting off to my bedroom.
Father sighed again then told Owen that he would come wake him when it was his turn for lookout, then motioned him to his room to sleep for the 3 hours he had. He took them graciously then went to his room to bed.
Quickly 10:30 changed to 11:30 then to 12:30, before I heard fathers heavy footsteps treading up the stairs to Owens room. In the 3 hours that Owen used for sleep, I wasn't able to even get a moments of shut eye. I guess I was still full of adrenalin from the night before when Mystery was nearly attacked..!
2 hours passed since Owen was awoken for watch and since I couldn't sleep I grabbed mothers notebook and wrote in it..
Continuation from before:
It's been three hours since father started watch, he just switched with Owen, and I haven't been able to get any sleep.. It will be hard to do lookout when I didn't get any sleep but it couldn't of been avoided.. I only have an hour so better make some use of it, right?
I got up from my warm bed and stretched, making sure not to wake Zoe. I turned for the door and walked into the hallway, checking on my father and mother who were already fast asleep. I skipped down a few stairs before I hit the bottom and grabbed a few of the guns and reloaded the empty or almost empty ones for when we needed them. I placed the newly reloaded guns onthe table on rows the looked at the battery powered clock. It flashed 4:30pm continuously. I growled slightly before tapping Owen on the shoulder.
"Hmm?" He questioned, sounding quite sleepy.
"You weren't sleeping were you? Anyways, it's my turn.." I reminded him and took the gun and his spot on the stool.
I shooed him up to bed again than positioned myself so I could see but also in a comfortable position to fire if need. Hopefully I wouldn't since no one else did..!
Over the passed couple days a heavy fog had started to form around the house further out, blocking our vision for approximately 100 yards in all directions.. Because of it I had to adjust myself to see in the furthest of ranges I could.
I had only looked away for a few minutes, and when I looked back I saw some very faded outlines of something in the distant fog. At first I couldn't make out what it was and thought it might've been my eyes playing tricks on me until they broke through the fogs barrier..! I almost gaged at the mob of zombies! There was at least 20 zombies! My jaw dropped as I started with an outburst of gunfire. Trying but horribly among for their heads. Luckily the loud echoing cracks of gunfire woke everyone up in the house, and father and Owen case bolting down the stairs. They grabbed some guns I reloaded and took aim in the other windows. I was about to go wake up mother when she bolted out of her bedroom.
"Dear! There are more rounding the back!" She cried, pointing to the window in their bedroom.
"What?!" Father yelled back, fear in his voice.
"Paige! Help me get Johnny, and Zoe to the cellar!" Mother pleaded.
I gasped, eyes wide with shock. How could she think that!? The cellar is OUTSIDE!
"B-but! Mum! The cellar is OUTSIDE!" I exclaimed, "if you take them out there they might-"
"I know.. But it's safer there, then in here..!"
"Father..! I cant!" I cried to father.
"Just do it Paige! Well cover you from in here!" He assured us, with a fake small smile.
I nodded unsurely with fear as I helped mum grab the kids and dogs. We didn't bring anything with us so we could run faster.
I went first to make sure no sick ones were anywhere near us as I unlocked the cellar. When I heard the click of the lock unlatching I motioned them to come and get in quickly. What I hadn't noticed was that father and Owen were calling to me about a stray zombie..!
Everyone was running towards the cellar when Zoe fell. Mother couldn't get her because she was carrying Johnny and I wasn't able to go get her back I was holding the cellar open so it wouldn't lock and guarding the entrance from zombies. Luke had noticed Zoe fell and ran to her side to help her get up, when the zombie came around the back of the house. He growled loudly at it and barked at it, alarming all of us. We all spun around to look at Zoe who was crawling away crying in fear with Luke guarding her. When the zombie got to close he lunged at it and bit it's arm. He attacked it to let Zoe get away..! Zoe was able to recover her balance and ran to us, tears streaming down her face. When mother got to the cellar with Johnny and Zoe I shoved them all in.
When I looked back to call Luke, I heard a loud shriek as a small group of zombies surrounded Luke and tackled him to the group, biting him and cutting him, ripping him open. I cried his name only to have one last whimper come from him as he was taken down. I screamed his name and cried, covering my mouth as tears rolled down my cheeks. In anger and grief I let out a burst of gunfire at the group of zombies, killing them instantly.
I was about to run to him when mother grabbed me in a bear hug an pulled me into the cellar. Not long after did the gunfire quiet down to a stop.
When Owen and father came to the cellar with supplies a few hours later I was curled up in a ball crying my heart and, as did Zoe and Johnny.
For a few days we partially lived in the cellar, only having father, Owen and I bringing things from the house that we needed and taking watch. Sooner or later we were bound to run low on food and supplies, so we made a plan that father, Owen and I would go out for a search raid. Which we continued out not even a day later.
When we headed out we headed to the neighborhoods around our house to look for others and food in abandoned houses. One house that we decided to raid was like a dream house. Full of food, water, antibiotics and much more! At that we should've stopped, but decided to continue on.. When we walked into a room I almost threw up.. There was no food.. No humans.. Only.. Human remains..!
