73: Burying The Dead

Lay You Down - Sam Smith

Warning: Get Some Tissues :'(

_______________

The shovel continues to sink deeper into the ground, forcing out dirt to the side to make the hole bigger. Sweat beams Jungkook's forehead from the burning hot sun casting down on him, making this process much harder than it already is.

However, after a few more digs, Jungkook nods to the depth of the hole, leaning against the shovel to catch his breath.

He forgot hot the country side it in Daegu, but regardless he misses this calming aura. The feel of the fields and the gentle breeze that would caress his skin delicately. He remembers coming here a lot when he was younger with his parents, begging them to not leave this beautiful place.

It feels nice.

Suddenly Jungkook senses movement from the corner of his eye, feeling his heart tug deeper once he realized who it was. Slowly craning his head to the side, he sees Taehyung carrying his father in his arms. His lifeless face is on his shoulder, completely pale from having to have been in a freezing capsule this whole entire time.

Taehyung said he knew his father wouldn't want to be buried in just a regular cemetery back in Seoul. He would want to be buried here, in his home town. Where he came from. Taehyung was also very persistent that Jungkook would come along too, not that he would've denied going either way.

Taehyung has been there for him through his lowest moment now, he has to be there for him.

Not because it's an obligation, but......

Honestly.... Jungkook just knows he has to be here.

The moment Taehyung reached Jungkook, the older brunette only holds a strong gaze down to his father in his arms, feeling his chest tug slightly with his lips wobbling slightly. With a shake of his head he was going to put his father in the hole alone but daringly Jungkook grabs his father's legs to carry him. The contact made him want to scream on the spot and go into a heap of a mental break down but he fights it off as hard as he could. Taehyung looks at him with gapped lips, but sends him a shakily smile of appreciation. Carefully both boys eased down to the hole and laid the lifeless man at the center, placing his hands crossed over together.

He looks peaceful.

Almost like he's sleeping.

The climb out of the hole and Jungkook had to walk away for a moment to gather his breathing. His throat squeezed so tightly that it felt like he couldn't even breath.

This isn't about me.

Have to focus on Taehyung.

Fight it.

Fight it.

For Taehyung.

After a few more moments of him talking to himself, Jungkook slowly goes back to stand beside Taehyung, adjusting the collar of his bow tie and turns to look at him, "Anything you would like to say to him?"

Taehyung didn't know what to say. He just stared at the corpse with a deep frown on his lips. Being put in this position feels like a heavy weight on his shoulders, but regardless he slowly nods and stands up straight while adjusting his blazer, keeping a head high.

Here it goes.

"Da-"

He couldn't even finish. Taehyung chocked on aid and rubs his throat, trying hard to ooze the pain that's stabbing his esophagus.

Jungkook frowns painfully at him and shyly takes a step closer to him, his hand slightly shaking from the painful flashback that's circulating his head but he swallows it down, trying to provide Taehyung the comfort that he's here, with him, right now.

Even when he can't touch him.

After a few moments, Taehyung breathes heavily, staring down at his father, "Hi dad," he croaks lowly, "Its time for you to be one with the ground. Must be nice to not having to live in this world anymore huh?"

Jungkook stares at how brunette is slowly falling apart with every phrase escaping his lips, but manages to keep his head high, "I brought J-Jungkook with me. He doesn't remember what happened to you...... Don't worry, I'm not hunting down his ass, I know you wouldn't want that. You were never one for revenge and I don't want to disappoint you."

Silence continues to spread the atmosphere and Taehyung takes another deep breath, his face more composed than the previous moments, "I will be strong father. I hope you're finally at peace and...... F-finally be r-reunited with m-mom."

And Taehyung bows his head, crying silently with a hand pinching the bridge of his nose as the tears falls and tap the ground below him. Taehyung cries for a while longer as the grief only feels worse by every second but he wiping his tears away and weakly lets out another breath, "Take care of each other. I-I love you d-dad."

Taehyung couldn't look at him anymore, he steps back and runs a hand down his face, trying so hard to keep his emotions at bay. If his father were to be alive right now, he would hit him at the back of his head and tell him to toughen up. That death happens, it's part of life and it's about moving on now.

He has to keep going.

Even if it hurts.

And shit, it hurts so badly.

"Hello Mr. Kim."

Taehyung's ears perked to Jungkook's tiny voice speaking through the silence. His eyes follow the younger, who stares down at the body, tears glossing his eyes, "I'm sorry you had to go so soon, I can imagine you were a great father to Taehyungie. I will take good care of him for you and not let him get into any trouble."

Taehyung breaks a weak smile to his words and moves to stand beside Jungkook, who didn't even wince or flinch anymore to the close proximity, his entire focus is on Taehyung's father.

"In peace you go. Now let us handle the hard work in life, even if it will lead us to grey hair at the end of the day," Jungkook weakly giggles and wipes a tear from his cheek, "Taehyung is in good hands, I promise to keep him safe."

The duo didn't say anything after that, only stares at the once alive man with sorrow in their hearts. So many things is running through their heads individually. Taehyung is having a spiral of memories run all at once in his mind, slowly accepting the fact that his father that was once alive is not anymore. He's not going to wake up in the morning and see the sun or go to sleep with the night sky. Taehyung's father has always mentioned to Taehyung about this day. The day he will have to bury him, and he has said to keep in mind that his most biggest blessing in life was him.

His son.

Taehyung.

The brunette bites his lip and slowly looks at Jungkook, feeling a strong heavy feeling in his chest full of guilt.

A father would do anything for their kids, and what's worse than a son burying their father is a father burying their son; who they wanted to see prosper and grow ahead in life. Not to perish before they do.

So with that in mind Taehyung came to a mental decision in his head.

After a while of staring at the corpse, they began to shovel the dirt back into the hole, covering the lifeless face from the world completely. Taehyung has calmed down now since then, especially with Jungkook right beside him; It helped cool down his anxiety.

Once the hole got completely covered, Jungkook laid a single white rose on the freshly dirt while Taehyung put a small stone with his father's carved out name and birthday date and death date.

The carved stone he made himself.

Taehyung stares at the whole set before his eyes and feels himself wanting to break down once again, his face crumbling up in utter pain.

He wants his father to be alive.

To guide him in life.

To be there when he has troubles or is prospering in life.

Taehyung is alone. He feels so alone and barren on the inside, and it's shattering him completely from the inside.

That is, until he felt something.

At first he thought he was imagining it, but then he felt it again.

The feathering of skin on his hand.

His ungloved hands.

His breath slightly wavers when he feels the finger tips slowly feather the skin on his hand, caressing the bolt on his ring finger, feeling the bolt on Jungkook's finger against his knuckle gently.

The gesture was small and happened pretty fast since Jungkook instantly jerked his hand away from his, but that was enough for Taehyung to know the message.

Jungkook is here.

Despite the fact his memory is all fuzzy, he's still right here.

Right beside Taehyung.

Through the best and worst parts of life, he's right there.

And right now, that's all Taehyung could ask for.
