[37] The Lord is my Shepard, pt. 1
~•Garroth•~
My eyes blink open to the bright sunlight. I take a deep breath and rub my eyes. I don't hear anything but my air conditioner. I check the time.
9:35
Another day. I'm surviving another day.
I pick up the picture mom gave me last night. I trace over it with my finger and gently set it back onto my pillow. I decide to get up and walk downstairs.
Running down the stairs, I smell a good smell. Like one of mom's really good breakfasts, not just cereal or toast, which is what we usually eat.
I walk into the kitchen. Mom's setting up two plates, not four, which is weird. Don't Vylad and Zane get any?
Mom turns around, "Hey, baby. How are you feeling?"
"Better. Where are Vylad and Zane?" I raise an eyebrow.
"You're forgetting it's Thursday, G." She laughs. "They have school."
Not going to school for so long made me almost forget it exists. Mom decided not to make me go to school. I tried going for a couple weeks, but I couldn't concentrate. So, mom let me stay home.
"O-Oh, yeah," I rub the back of my neck.
"Are you hungry?" She asks, handing me a plate of biscuits and gravy.
I nod and smile, "Dad's favorite."
"And yours," she smiles and sits down at the table.
I smile and sit down next to her and begin to eat quickly. Hell, I'm starving. It tastes amazing. I haven't had this in forever, and it feels good to actually eat biscuits and gravy.
"So, how have you been?" Mon asks.
"Pretty good," I say.
"How's Aphmau? Is she doing okay?" She asks.
"Yeah, she's doing good." I bite my lip, trying to hide the fact that we smoked weed last night.
"That's good," she says. "Hey, G, where did you go last night?"
"N-Nowhere." I stutter.
"Garroth," she says in a more stern tone.
"I-I didn't do anything!" I say.
"Baby, I won't be mad. I'm just asking you to tell me." She looks at me.
I look up at her and bite my lip a little harder. I take a deep breath and try and force the words out. I'm ready for her to be upset.
"A-Aphmau and I... we went out and smoked weed," I say. "Not a lot, it wasn't that good."
Mom nods and keeps eating. I shake, ready for her to tell at me. She doesn't say a word, though. Why isn't she mad? What we did was basically going against everything she taught me.
She looks at my hands and smiles, "Garroth Joel, I told you I wouldn't be mad."
"Y-You aren't?!" I ask.
"No, honey. I understand why you did it, and you told me you didn't do a lot." She says. "I trust you."
"Thanks, mom." I smile.
"No problem." She pauses. "Was it good?"
"I told you that it wasn't!" I laugh and finish my food.
"Well you could have been just saying that!" She laughs, too.
She smiles at me once again and picks up the dishes. I get up and begin going upstairs, ready to isolate myself once again.
"Going upstairs?" She asks.
"Yeah, thanks for breakfast." I say.
"Love you, baby." She says.
"Love you too, mom." I say and walk back upstairs.

I shake during all classes, hoping nobody finds out or Gene doesn't blurt out the fact that I was smoking weed. My mom would kill me, even if it was helping Garroth live to the fullest.
My mom always told me not to drink underage or do drugs. My best bet is hoping is that I'm not addicted. I know for a fact Gene is pretty good at keeping secrets, though.
I pick up my books and binder and try to rush to class. I feel a hand on my shoulder. I jump, but turn around and see Laurance. He has a confused look on his face.
"Why are you so jumpy today?" He asks.
"No reason," I say quickly.
"Lies. Aph, you can tell me." He says calmly.
I sigh and take his arm. We push through kids rushing to class. I lead him to the back of the school. Laurance puts his stuff against the wall and looks me in the eye.
"Aphmau, tell me." He says quietly.
"I... fine. But you have to keep it secret." I say.
"P-Promise..." he stutters nervously.
"Okay... Last night, Garroth and I... we went out to smoke weed. It was on his bucket list and he.. I really wanted him to be happy, I guess." I say.
He laughs, "That's what you were so nervous about?!'
"L-Laurance! Not so loud!" I whisper.
"Aphmau, it's not a big deal. Calm down, I won't tell anyone." He tells me."
"You promise?" I ask, once again.
"You tried to help Garroth be happy. Of course I promise not to tell," he says.
I smile and set my stuff down, then hugging him tightly. He gently rubs my back, hugging back.
"Its gonna be okay, Aph. I promise." He says.
"I know. Thanks, Laurance," I say.
"You're welcome..." he says.

I keep doing things around the house, not hearing a sound from upstairs. That isn't unusual, he's awful quiet when he's alone.
I fold the laundry quietly in case he's asleep. I would usually have something to listen to, but I don't wanna wake him up.
After a few hours, he usually wakes up and steps out of his room. I check the time, it's almost 2:30. I decide to go check on him, he's never sleeping this long.
I walk up to his door and give it a small knock. He doesn't answer, so I step inside. He's laying on his bed, hand on his chest. His earbuds are still in his ears. I walk over and gently take them out, sitting next to him.
"Hey, G, can you wake up for me?" I ask quietly. He doesn't respond.
I place a hand on his cheek, "C'mon, baby, I know you're tired but you gotta wake up for me."
He still doesn't respond.
"Garroth, wake up for me," I say.
He doesn't respond. I place my hand under his nose, he's still breathing. I take his wrist and check his pulse.
There's almost nothing.
"Garroth! Baby, wake up!" I shake him.
"Garroth, please!" Tears flood my eyes.
I take out my phone and call 911. I try my hardest not to panic while telling the operator the details. I hang up, tears flowing down my face.
"Stay with me, baby. Just for a little longer."
