[20] Operation: Save the Boy pt. 1

Ah, The Walking Dead.

A dramatic, yet action filled show.

As I watch Rick and Carl kill people and walkers, I think about my dad. How he's fighting so we can survive. I shudder at the thought of him going to a bunch of dangerous places. There are just those days that you don't know whether or not he's gonna come back or not.

Changing the subject, my surgery is in a couple days. I'm too nervous, considering I have to be awake during the entire thing. Even though I won't feel a thing, damn. They're harsh here.

My mom walks in, "Hey, G, how are you doing?"

"Better," I shrug.

"I know you miss your dad, I do too. But he will be back, okay?" She kneels next to me and looks me straight in the eye.

I take a deep breath and nod. She smiles at me and stands up, also sighing. I look down, trying not to think of anything.

"The nurse should be in here in a few minutes to prep you for surgery. Are you ready?" Mom asks. I look up at her and nod.

Just then, a nurse walks in. Her brown eyes, tall height, and blonde hair are familiar to me. Just then, I realize who it is.

Hannah.

She looks up at me and smiles. I remember that smile, always there when I needed it.

"Hey, Garroth!" She says enthusiastically.

"Hannah!" I say, getting up.

"Wow, you've grown! You're almost as tall as me," she says. "Are you ready?"

I nod. She smiles, puts a hand on my back, and leads me to a room. It's small, with a blue chair and scale, and a bunch of other things that I really have no idea what they are for.

Hannah gestures me to the chair to sit down. I sit down, and the chair is pretty comfortable. She takes a blood pressure cup off the machine and wraps it around my arm. She turns the machine on and the cup starts squeezing my arm. It hurts at first, but then it slows down and then slowly releases. Hannah takes the cup off.

"Okay, blood pressure's normal," she mumbles to herself as she writes something down. "Wanna see how tall you are?"

I nod excitedly. She laughs and I get up and stand straight against the wall. She lowers a plate thing onto my head and laughs.

"5'5. Man, you're tall!" She exclaims.

I shrug and smile, "Runs in the family."

"I see that. Your dad is pretty tall," Hannah says, raising the plate. "Last but not least, weight."

I step up onto the scale. The numbers go up but start slowing down pretty fast. I haven't had much of an appetite lately, so I wouldn't expect it to be a lot.

"Okay, Garroth, you are done. I'll have your mom take you back to your room now," Hannah looks at my mom and nods.

I run over to my mom and we walk back to the room. I sit down on the bed and sigh, ready for whatever comes at me. I remember what my dad said.

"You could die, I'd give anything to make you not die, but cancer could take over your body and kill you."

I'm glad he told me the truth. Most parents wouldn't, most parents would tell their kids that it's okay and that they won't die. But my dad doesn't believe in that. He says that if you can't completely ensure that promise, you shouldn't make it. The more I think about it, the more I want him back.

"Hey, why are you looking so down?" A voice asks. I look up again to see Aphmau.

"Are you just always there?" I ask, giving a half smile.

She giggles and nods, "But I brought a friend."

"Who?"

"Hey, Garroth!" Laurance jumps out from behind her and quite frankly, scares the crap out of me.

I laugh in embarrassment as he dies of laughter and Aphmau crosses her arms at him. He comes over to me and sits down, as does Aphmau. Laurance takes a look at my head and laughs.

"Nice mohawk, dude," he laughs again.

"Gracias," I say sarcastically.

"I hear you got prepped for surgery today," Aphmau says. I nod.

"I found out I'm 5'5," I say.

"Jeez, Garroth! You're twelve!" Laurance says. I laugh.

"Yeah, I'm tall."

Aphmau crosses her arms, "No duh, Sherlock."

Laurance and I die of laughter as Aphmau rolls her eyes at us. A few of the nurses walk by and look at us weird, but I don't mind. It's nice to get the subject changed.

I open the iPad, almost clicking on Netflix, but go over to FaceTime. I find my dad's contact and click on it. As far as I know, he's not wherever he was yet. It takes a couple days to get there.

"Hey, soldier," he says once FaceTime connects.

"Hey, dad," I say. "Where are you?" I asked, confused.

"Airport," he says. "Flight got delayed."

I nod, "So you won't be there for a while?"

"At least not for a couple days. Why?"

"J-Just wondering," I stutter.

He pauses, creating an awkward silence, "Your surgery is tomorrow, isn't it?"

"Yep," I nod sadly.

"Are you nervous?"

I nod again, "I have to be awake during the whole thing."

"You won't feel anything, I promise," he says. "Besides, you're my soldier, right?" His blue eyes seem to be thoughtful and scared.

"Yeah," I smile and nod.

"Okay," he pauses. "Get some sleep, alright? I'll see you later."

"Okay, bye dad," I say sadly.

"Bye," he hangs up.

I turn off the iPad and stare up at the ceiling, nervous about everything. I can't wait for it to be over with. I turn my eyes off and feel myself drift off to sleep.

I'm dad's soldier, I'm mom's survivor.
