III: The Furious Fire Ants
Lukas, Yasmin, and Theo all crowded around the phone as Sailor out in her passcode: 4-1-06.
She swiped left until the "Photos" application appeared on the bottom right corner of the screen. Sailor had taken five pictures of the map. If this was a graph like the one they used in algebra then she would have taken a picture of every quadrant and a picture of the whole thing.
"He said that they were going on this trail." Lukas pointed to the path on the right.
"Why don't they go on this one?" They asked, pointing to the other path.
"I was going to ask that, but I got interrupted," Lukas confessed.
"Maybe that path is harder or not as clear as this one," Yasmin guessed.
"Or maybe~" Sailor said, elongating the 'may' and 'be' in the word. Her chin tilted up for the 'may' making the first half of the word higher lichee and the last, then moving her head back to straight and forward for the 'be'. "The left path is too easy for Hunter Hunter so he would rather choose the right one."
"I highly doubt that," commented Yasmin.
"It could be true," Sailor argued.
"Guys, can we not argue?" Lukas said, successfully ending the friendly, curt argument.
"Yes, I agree with Lukas. We really should begin the pathway," Yasmin said. "I believe that it's Hunter Hunter and Mr. Lowe against the four of us."
"Which path should we take?" Theo asked.
"I propose the left one. Not only is it shorter, but if Hunter Hunter sees us he would most likely send us back, same with Mr. Lowe," Yasmin said.
"But I thought you said it would be harder." Sailor tilted her head at the Liberian.
Yasmin huffed out a sigh, "That was only a guess. Who knows; maybe you are correct and Miss Addams was correct about you."
"What did Miss Addams say about me?" Sailor inquired, getting closer to her friend.
"No comment." Yasmin started straight ahead of her.
"Uh... We should probably start if we want to beat Hunter to the gemstone," Theo said, trying to stop whatever was happening.
This happened a lot. The girls would argue over the silliest of things. It was more playful banter than an actually full blown argument, but the boys never knew what to do in these situations. Lukas usually tried to diffuse the situation by changing the subject. He didn't like it when his friends fought.
So it was decided they would take the left pathway and try to beat the supposedly expert adventurer.
"Okay well what are we waiting for?" Sailor got out of their little huddled group. "Let's go exploring!" She ran into the forest the way that Hunter and Mr. Lowe went in.
"Wait Sailor," Lukas said, running after the reckless blonde. "That's the wrong entrance!"
"Well while those two try to find the path how about we go get some materials?" Yasmin said.
"Sure."
***
Lukas ran to Sailor. 'Why does she always run away from me?' he thought. He frowned when the intrusive thought popped into his head. His legs had stopped by the entrance of the thought.
'...run away...' The words echoed in his head.
"Hey," someone said, bringing Lukas from his thoughts. Sailor ran up to him. "What are you doing?"
"I was running after you," Lukas said as if that was a normal occurrence, which it was. "You really should stop doing that," whispered the ginger.
"What was that?" Sailor asked, cupping her hand around her ear.
"Nothing!"
"There they are," a male voice said. Lukas and Sailor turned around to see their giant friend.
"It's like Sailor who would run away without any preparations," Yasmin said, pushing the loop off her shoulders and into the pathway.
"What preparations?" Sailor asked, getting closer to them, Lukas quickly followed.
Theo and Yasmin put down all their predictions on the floor. There was the loop of rope, a machet looking sword, and some other items one would need for adventuring.
"Where did you get this from?" Lukas asked as Sailor grabbed the machete. The blonde looked at it, turning it around in her hand. A sparkle of an idea lit up her blue eyes.
"Will we go to the weapon's store," Yasmin explained. "Since Hunter thought Theo was an adult then I thought that all the other villagers would too; and I was right." A triumphant smile laid on the dark skinned female.
"I simply walked in there and asked for something an adventurer would use," Theo added, continuing their story. "He went to the back and gave me this."
Sailor lunged forward with the machete doing a sort of fencing lunge. She played with the weapon before Luaks said, "You're going to hurt someone with that thing."
Sailor sighed and stood straight with the machete lazily/haphazardly in her hand. "Fine," she said, stretching out the word in fake annoyance.
"I'll take that," Theo said, stealing the weapon from the blonde's hand.
"Hey, that was mine," Sailor squeaked.
"Technically, it's Theo's since he..." Yasmin paused thinking of the correct word for the statement, "he bought it? Is that the correct word for this situation?"
"Well, you're the smartest one out of the four of us so whatever you say is the truth," Sailor said.
"Now that we have that taken care of, I suggest we get started," Theo said, ending the conversation.
"Right." Sailor pointed her pointer finger to the sky when she said the word.
And just like that they officially started their adventure to get the Mystic Moonstone.
Yasmin had assigned her friends roles. Theo was the tallest and had the machete so he was in charge of clearing their path. As Yasmin had suspected it was not used or had been for a long time. The tall brunet had to chop vines that hung above them and got in their way and also overgrown plants, their gigantic leaves and or stems blocking their way.
Sailor was placed in the 'scout' role. One, for her insistence of being in the front which is usually where the scout is and two, for her weariness of Hunter Hunter and Mr. Lowe. Since the librarian had been shushing her on the daily Yasmin hoped that she was more familiar with the man and could spot him if she saw him. Yasmin and Sailor shared the belief that it would be best if their group and Hunter's group didn't connect with each other.
Finally Lukas, she didn't really know what to do with him so he would be a floater until she could place him in a spot. For now he was a scout with Sailor.
As for herself Yasmin had given herself the ambiguity tolerance person since she was the smartest in their group as Sailor had said earlier she thought she could be ambiguity tolerant and figure out every challenge they might encounter.
Lukas walked closer behind Theo with Sailor. He was holding her phone.
"What's the password again?" Looked up from the phone to the blonde, after trying to unlock the device to see the pictures she recently took.
"Four, one, zero, six," Sailor waved her hand at the ginger, paying the littlest amount of attention to her friend and instead paying attention to what was in front of her.
Lukas tapped in the numbers and the phone unlocked for him. "Thank you." "By the way..." Lukas looked up to his friend. "Why is that your passcode?"
This seemed to bring Sailor out of her ignoring session as she looked at him. "It's my birthday."
"Your birthday is..." Lukas counted on his fingers figuring out the exact date. "April first? Wait, are you pranking me?"
Sailor let out a hearty laugh. Everyone stopped to watch the spectacle, even Yasmin who was more shocked and confused. "Oh, that's funny!" The blonde continued to laugh until she was coughing not. Lukas can to her aid packed her back. "Thank you. Thank you." Sailor stood straight and mandated to stop laughing. "I'm not pranking you. Why would I? That would be such a boring prank. I was actually born on April fools day."
"That would explain your funny personality." Theo turned around and started walking. The rest of the group followed suit.
"Have you seen anything Sailor?" Yasmin called from the back.
"No, nothing yet, just some nasty ants up ahead."
"Ants?" Lukas stiffened his pose, he walked slowly and had his eyes on the road like it was the only thing keeping him alive at that point.
Theo looked back at the red-head; he fell back. "Hey Lukas, what's wrong?"
"N-Nothing. Just...busy." Lukas paid no mind to his friend. His eyes were on the first path.
"Theo!" Sailor yelled, she seemed to be angry but Lukas didn't care at that point.
Theo speed walked ahead and slashed some more vines that were in the group path.
"Lukas." It was Sailor's voice. Lukas looked up. Then he felt it. Tiny little things touching him a burning sense station. As if he was in slow motion Lukas looked down at his leg. A swarm of fire ants were on his leg.
A blood curdling scream echoed in the jungle.
The ants bite down into Lukas. Each fire ant leaving multiple bits on his leg. Silor quickly jumped into action and flinged the ants away from his leg. Little red bumps slowly formed on his leg. She continued to do this action until she looked up at Lukas. "Are you o..."
Lukas takes in deep breath hard and fast as if he is drowning in water.
"Yasmin!"
Yasmin's black hair wipes in action as she runs to the poor boy's spot. With the help of Sailor and Theo they move him away from the fire ant mound. He still has trouble breathing "I...I'm allergic." His bt's look more like hives now as they inflame.
"He's going through anaphylaxis! Does anyone have any Antihistamine or Epinephrine?"
"What?"
"An epipen," Theo quickly spat out.
Sailor rummaged through her pockets until she found what's she's looking for. The blonde uncapped it and stabbed the epi-pen into Lukas' leg. The world seems to go quickly. No rustling of leaves or animals make a sound. The wind doesn't even blow.
The three of them wait in silence, the tension that of a violin's vibrato. Will he live?
"Is he... dead?" Sailor slowly looked at Theo and Yasmin.
"Hopefully not," Yasmin said. "He most likely will have an uniphasic reaction and get better within the hour." Sailor and Theo sighed in relief, falling backwards on the dirt path. Not a care in the world. "We still have to continue, you know." Yasmin pushed up on her knee and stood up, blocking the sun for Sailor and Theo. She tapped her finger on the side of her thigh until she said her orders, "Theo, you carry Lukas, and Sailor...you will take Theo's job of clearing our path."
"Yes!" Sailor jumped into the air instantly forgetting that her friend just had an allergic reaction to fire ants. Theo gave her his machete and she skipped to the front of the path.
Everything more or less got to normal as Theo picked up the sleeping ginger and piggy backed him on his back. Sailor cleared the vegetation in their way, Theo carried Lukas behind her, and Yasmin stayed behind making sure that nothing else bad happened to them.
Shalom, Seedlings! Today's question is: have you ever had an allergic reaction? If so, what are you allergic too? How traumatic was it? Did I do a good job with my representation of it?
I cannot wait to hear what your comments are. Talk to you soon!
