Chapter 4: The Laughter
The eerie laughter echoed through the house, sending chills down Sara and Leanna's spines. They exchanged horrified glances. It was a sound that didn't belong in the desolate halls of The Anne House.
"Did you hear that?" Leanna whispered, her voice trembling.
Sara nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "Yeah. It sounded like a child."
They turned on their flashlights, casting shaky beams of light into the darkness. Shadows danced and twisted, taking on sinister shapes that seemed to leer at them from the corners.
"We need to find out where that's coming from," Sara said, trying to steady her voice. "Let's check the upstairs rooms."
They ascended the creaky staircase, their flashlights flickering as they moved. The air grew colder with each step, and an oppressive silence settled around them. As they reached the top, the laughter ceased, leaving only the sound of their own heavy breathing.
"Let's start with the bedrooms," Leanna suggested.
They moved from room to room, their nerves on edge. Each room was empty, filled only with dust and decaying furniture. But the sense of being watched never left them.
In the last bedroom, Sara noticed something strange. "Look at this," she said, pointing to a set of old toys scattered on the floor.
Leanna's brow furrowed. "Those weren't there before."
Sara felt a chill run down her spine. "I think we're dealing with a spirit of a child."
Before they could process what was happening, a sudden cold breeze swept through the room, extinguishing their flashlights and plunging them into darkness. Panic clawed at their chests as they fumbled for their equipment.
"We need to get back to the living room," Leanna said, her voice shaking. "Now."
They stumbled through the darkness, their footsteps echoing in the empty halls. As they reached the top of the stairs, they heard it again—the child's laughter, this time closer and more sinister.
Sara's heart raced. "We need to move, Leanna. Now."
They hurried down the stairs, the laughter following them, growing louder and more menacing. As they reached the bottom, they saw a shadow move in the corner of their vision.
Leanna grabbed Sara's arm. "Did you see that?"
Sara nodded, fear gripping her heart. "Yeah. We need to get out of here."
They raced back to the living room, slamming the door behind them. They leaned against it, trying to catch their breath.
"What was that?" Leanna gasped, her eyes wide with fear.
Sara shook her head, trying to steady her breathing. "I don't know, but whatever it is, it doesn't want us here."
As they sat there, trying to make sense of what had just happened, a low, guttural growl echoed from the depths of the house, sending shivers down their spines.
