Chapter 9

Matthew looked terrified. The second he'd woken up, he'd been lugged downstairs and was now sat in an armchair, still in his pyjamas, a series of identical frowns or looks of disappointment facing him.

"It wasn't me I swear" he said, his voice shaking. "I was in my room all night. I never left it, honestly."

"How do you explain this then?" Arthur thrust his bloodied glasses forwards so they were almost under his nose. Matthew leaned back a little to focus on them and then paled.

"Oh" he whispered. "So... that's where they were."

Francis sat down and put his head in his hands. "Matthew. Please tell me this wasn't you?"

"It wasn't, it wasn't honest. I wouldn't ever do anything like this" Matthew wailed. "My glasses have been missing since I went to the bathroom last night. I woke up and they weren't there."

"Missing because you... I don't know... maybe dropped them in a pool of blood" Ivan hissed. "Maybe bathroom because you had blood you needed to wash off your hands?"

"Look dudes" Alfred stood up and rested a hand on Matthew's head. "I know how this would look on Mattie's behalf, but he's the silent dude from every single meeting we've ever been to. Why would he kill any of us? This is the same Mattie we know, my brother. He's not a killer."

"No one ever plans a murder out loud" Kiku breathed.

"I... I..." Matthew stuttered. "I had nothing to do with this?"

"Mattie has only spoken friendly stuff with Yao" Alfred defended. "Feliciano is one of his best mates, one of the only people who notices him all the time. I don't think he's ever even talked to Elizaveta. If it was Mattie, don't you think it'd be a bit weird to go for people like that first? What about Ivan? Who always mistakes him for a chair or something." Ivan glared at him, his intimidating purple aura instantly surrounding him. Alfred ignored him and gestured to Arthur and Francis. "What about you guys? You're always forgetting him and mistaking him for me. What about me? If it was Mattie, don't you think he'd have gone for people like us first?"

"So are you working with him?" Ludwig asked, firing a look at Alfred.

Alfred almost choked. "What?"

"You heard me" Ludwig stood upright from leaning against the wall and moved further towards the centre of the room where Arthur and Francis were standing, looking slightly puzzled by the proposition. "All the evidence is there. Matthew killed them, so why are you sticking up for him?"

"Coz dude, he's my brother" Alfred snarled. "If we accused Gilbert, wouldn't you try and stick up for him?"

Ludwig hesitated.

"Thanks bruder" Gilbert rolled his eyes. "But I agree with Alfred. Matthew isn't the type of person to kill people. And anyway, it doesn't explain why Vash killed himself does it?"

"Maybe he was planning on doing so already" Ludwig said.

"He tried to get out last minute" Gilbert sighed. "Does that strike you as someone who's been planning on killing themselves for a while?"

"Well no... but..." Ludwig started.

"Where's the gun?" They turned as Lovino stepped forwards. "If the Quiet bastard killed them, killed my fratello, where's the gun? I doubt he can even use a gun. And you forget, at the time, he was in the kitchen wasn't he. Think about stuff before you make accusations Potato. Wine and Tea bastards, isn't he supposed to be your brother?" Lovino shook his head and exhaled fast. "What the fuck is up with you people?" He turned on his heel and stepped upstairs.

Antonio motioned to Juan and they went up after him.

"It still stands" Roderich said, standing up from the couch. "Why were your glasses there?"

"I don't know" Matthew's voice raised a couple of octaves. "Don't you think I want to know that as well?"

"It wasn't Birdie" Gilbert shook his head. "It couldn't have been."

"There's no way" Alfred said, glaring at everyone individually. "And anyway, if we're going to shout at anyone, why don't we shout at Francis? He fell asleep, which let whoever killed, who was not Mattie, Yao kill him."

"Yeah" Arthur turned and jabbed Francis. "What was that? We asked you to do one simple job. One simple job Francis. Don't fall asleep while you're on watch and what do you do? Fall asleep while you're on watch."

"Why don't you try staying up all night" Francis hissed. "It's hard okay, and why are we shouting at me again? I wasn't the one to kill Yao."

"He wasn't" Matthew nodded. "He was still there when I came back from the bathroom, although... I think you were asleep by that time. I could hear people from behind every door. Yao was still alive at that point, and Francis was asleep."

"But that doesn't mean you weren't one of the factors to kill him" Ivan shouted. "If you'd have stayed awake, we wouldn't be having this discussion, people wouldn't be taking sides against each other in an attempt to stop people blaming Matthew and Yao wouldn't be dead."

"Can we stop talking about it please?" Kiku whispered. He was curled up into the arm of the couch, hugging a pillow, eyes downcast.

Ivan sighed. "We're not getting anywhere anyway." He turned and slammed out of the door into the day, the fog having cleared overnight.
