Chapter 17
Matthew sat in his room against the wall, his head buried in his knees, his legs drawn up to his chest. It wasn't him. It wasn't him. It didn't matter how much he repeated the words to himself, they were starting to seem more and more true. Maybe it was him. Maybe he had done something in the past which had... actually, that theory didn't make sense, but he was starting to become less and less certain that it wasn't him. It was probably just the fact that everyone was blaming him. When someone else died, they'd stop and he could calm down, but that sounded like he wanted someone else to die, which meant that maybe, it was him.
Him, Matthew Williams, the killer.
It didn't seem quite right, but there were parts of it that seemed like he was reading off a fact page. It was more of a Wikipedia page if anything, where most things are true, but some little details weren't. Before, he was sure that the false detail was the 'killer' part, but now he wasn't so sure. Maybe it was him, but in a different form or something like that. Maybe he had another personality which kept on taking over and killing people, which would make the name, Matthew Williams, the false piece of information.
He wasn't quite sure what to believe.
"Mattie?"
The door handle rattled and someone kicked on the door at the other side and was rewarded with nothing but a sore foot.
"Damn it, Mattie, you alright?"
Al.
Of course, he'd been asleep when the episode had happened. He slept a lot at the moment. Him being asleep at the time it happened maybe made him someone else to think about? No. He couldn't blame his brother. That wasn't happening. Al had stuck by him and defended him against the others no matter what had happened, so why should he start to blame Al?
"Yeah" he said. "I'm fine."
"I can't hear you properly bro" there was a noise on the other side of the door. "Come closer maybe? Or are you right at the door now."
"No" Matthew crossed the room and leant against the door. "I was on the opposite side of the room."
"That was why I couldn't hear you properly then" Alfred laughed weakly and then went silent for a second. "What happened Mattie?"
"What didn't happen?" Matthew sighed. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I went into the kitchen and Antonio was just kind of... you know... dead... in a pool of his own blood. I tried to leave the room and get the others, but Juan just kind of appeared and... he's always been a quite guy. I've never known anyone to shout so much at me! Not even when I kicked the ball through Arthur's window when we were kids."
"He did get kind of mad" Alfred laughed. "Good ol' Iggy." There was a silence. "One of the many casualties of this whole thing."
"Yeah" Matthew sighed and dragged himself up onto his knees to face the door. "Ludwig took it pretty much the same way Juan took it, as did Roderich, and they all flipped."
"Francis did stick up for you though right?"
Matthew didn't say anything, just leant his head against the door and shook it, knowing full well that Alfred didn't have to see him to know.
"That bastard" there was a shuffling noise on the other side of the door. "I'll kill him where he stands. He's meant to look after you and he didn't even protect you against Ludwig, Roderich and Juan. I need to shout at them too. I'll kill them all."
"Alfred don't" Matthew sighed. "It'll just cause more tension. It's fine. Nothing's happening while I'm in here. Everything's fine you see."
Alfred was silent for a second. "How long are you in here for?"
"A week... kind of" Matthew said.
"What do you mean 'kind of'?"
"Well... if anything happens in the space of time between now, I'm let out straight afterwards because they know it isn't me. If nothing happens, Juan's insisting it's me and Ludwig'll keep me in here until help comes."
"Damn it, I thought Juan was a nice dude" Alfred sounded like he was gritting his teeth. "Clearly not. I'll give him a piece of my mind, like, what's even up with him?"
"Chill Alfred, it's fine" Matthew held back a laugh. "Antonio's just died. He was his brother and he doesn't exactly trust anyone else in the world let alone here. He's just upset."
"Yeah? Did I go around blaming everyone when Arthur died? When Kiku died? Did I then?" Alfred snapped. "I should go around blaming everyone now really. I mean, they've basically good as killed you."
"But there's really no point in doing anything to anyone" Matthew said. "They'll just blame you then."
"So?"
This time, Matthew did laugh. "Damn it Al, why're you so reckless?"
"I don't know. I've always got you and Arthur and Francis there to keep me in check so I don't do anything stupid, so I don't need to not be reckless" Alfred laughed.
Matthew grinned into the door. "Just promise me one thing Al."
"Yeah?"
"Promise me you won't do anything stupid okay?"
There was a laugh from the other side. "What ever you say bro."
Matthew smiled.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!! Hope you all have the best time you possibly can do ^-^
