Chapter 9
I run into the room across from ours and look all around for a camera or anything. When I realize it's clear, I reach under the bed, which is where everyone keeps their clothing in bins. Pulling out the bins, I toss the clothes around the room. Which doesn't take long. There are not many clothes; each person just has a couple of program shirts and a few pairs of jeans. When I finish I start ripping sheets off mattresses and flipping them onto the floor. After that, I move onto the next room. Same thing. Check for cameras and ruin the rooms. I still have no idea what this is going to have to do with anything. Soon enough I finish this room, and I have one room left. When I am halfway done Zayn comes in and helps me finish. I am so glad I have this job and not the library. This is much more fun. It releases a part in me that needs to have an outlet.
"Oh my god," Someone gasps down the hall. It's Lemma's voice. I freeze Zayn and I exchange looks with each other. Her steps coming down the hall, "What happened?" She is coming closer to the room we are in. If she sees us we will be done. We are about 10 seconds from being done. No way she will cover for Zayn after this. I start to crawl under the bottom bunk of the room we are in. Maybe we could hide until she leaves. Her steps get closer and closer. Zayn's feet move towards the door, I put out my hand I am about to yell for him to hide, but that would give me up.
Lemma stands in the doorway and he walks up to her. "Lemma! I just came down here and everything was ruined. I just did a sweep to make sure no one was still here. You didn't see anyone did you?" His voice is lighter and more pleasant than ever.
"No, I didn't," She steps closer, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I just... can you do me a favor?"
"Yeah of course! What?"
"Can you just go back up and act like you didn't see anything if people know I was down here everyone's going to think I saw who did it and I'm lying or maybe I even did it."
"Yeah definitely."
"Thanks..." He pauses. "Your.... great." He sounds like he is being strangled. I bite my tongue so I don't laugh. His tone is so stiff I can tell it really hurt him to say that.
Her feet get so close to his then she walks off. I think that was a hug? When she is far off I get out from under the bed.
"Alright, let's go to the computer room the meet Nevx and Abbot."
I guess we are not going to acknowledge what just happened.
The elevator dings when it reads 5. We take a left when we get out. Abbot standing outside of the computer room. "Nevx is having a hard time finding it on the computer. I kinda think this guy's real name is not Joshua even."
"Has she tried looking in books?" I ask. Since I don't even know what a computer is.
"I don't know; you should talk to her," Abbot says. I walk in and hear Zayn's steps behind me soon after.
The library is dark, so I keep my hands out to not run into anything. Soon I see a bright light. I follow it to where I figure Nevx must be. I was right.
I approach her. "No luck?" I say in a hushed tone.
She is sitting at a box that looks like a thinner t.v. but she is controlling it. With a small box next to it. She slams her hand down. "No this has nothing on him, no last name. I got a middle name, Daniel. But I don't know if they keep middle names in the address systems."
"Well, we should get going. It's almost 7:30." Zayn checks his watch.
"Yeah..." She clicks in the top corner of the computer on a button that says clear history. "To where now?" She turns to Zayn.
"The 12th floor."
We all sprint to the elevators "Will our passes work?" I ask Zayn.
He shakes his head "No. But Last time we stole a pass. Well, you actually did." He takes a random id out of his back pocket and scans it. When he scans it almost half of the buttons light up this time.
The doors open and there is a guard standing in front of what I'm going to guess is the room we need to get into.
"I'll distract again," Abbot volunteers. "I'm very good at talking," He smiles.
"Yeah, we can tell." Nevx grins.
"Just meet us on the roof in 10 minutes."
Abbot clicks his tongue, "Got it." Abbot goes up to the lady "Excuse me. we have been having a problem with the elevators"
"What is it?" She asks.
"Well, it might be better if I show you." He takes her to the elevator. "We keep on pressing level 68 and the button will not work." He presses a button. "See it just does not... Oh well, look at that!" the doors shut before she can get out. He is a little genius.
Zayn swiped the stolen id to get into the room the guard was protecting.
The room we enter is completely dark other than the light showing through the door from the hall. Zayn pulls out a flashlight and turns it on. He starts shining it around the room which is the size of a cafeteria. From what I can see it's just rows and rows of filing cabinets.
"How the hell are we going to find this guy's address?" Nevx crosses her arms.
"It is alphabetical order. So the J's should be....." He scans the room mumbling numbers. "There." He points to an aisle. We jog down it. Soon enough we find Joshua, there are still records of around 200 probably. This place is so much bigger than Ferris.
"Joshua..." Zayn mumbles. "Joshua ables.... Joshua dades... Joshua da...." He mumbles a bunch more names for a couple of minutes. Every couple of seconds my head darts back to the door to make sure no one comes in. If someone walks in, we are done.
Bam! No. Someone came in. I check the door, but no one is there. And the sound didn't come in that direction. Zayn shines his flashlight over the direction the sound came from which is to the left. Then he looks at me and tilts his head towards it.
"Go check on that." He suggests.
I make my way towards it. With no light because he requires it to read the names. Step by step I start to feel sweat fill my hand. When I peek around the cabinet to where the bang was I don't see anything. "Clear!" I shout back at them and head back.
"Joshua Daniels!" Zayn exclaims in the distance. "Ok, there are 5 of them here on record. And I ... am going to put money down, it's this one." He holds up a file. "Let's see it says he's at 55 Missouri street." He starts to walk out.
"Hey!" Nevx says in a hushed yell "You said there were 5. Are you just guessing this one is him? Because I'm not going if you guys are just flipping coins on these moves."
"No, I am not guessing... I'm taking a calculated assumption" He almost smiles.
Nevx smiles and points her finger at him, "I'm trusting you Zayn."
He walks out and we both follow. Pressing the elevator button he checks his watch. When we get in the turns to me and Nevx, "Luna, when we get to the roof act shocked. Nevx, do the face you always do."
We reach the roof and Zayn stumbles out. "Guys!" He yells. The roof instantly becomes silent and everyone looks at him perplexed. "All our rooms have been looted." I try my best convincing shocked face. Everyone instantly gets up. Zayn grabs my hand and pulls me to the side so I don't get stampeded but people. He lets it go when I'm safely out of the way. I stare at him.
"What?" He says defensively.
"That was smart."
"Well other than the fact that we will have to wait for Abbot for 10 minutes because the elevator will be packed." His lips curve up. He is having a moment of pride. Then his lips go back down and he looks at the floor, "And it was your plan last time. We didn't end up having to do it but you thought of it." I nod but don't talk. It makes me feel empty to think of how close it seems we used to be and now it's all gone. I bet it's harder for him than me. Losing me in some sort of way.
Soon enough Abbot comes out of the elevator his face red.
"Woah, calm down Abbot" Zayn puts a hand on his shoulder. Zayn is about a head taller than he is. He is trying not to laugh but the tips of his lips make him unsuccessful. Nevx is laughing harder than I have ever seen her laugh. When Abbot sees her reaction it makes him chuckle also.
"I'm okay. It was just..." Abbot lets out a breath, "Heck, I don't know what you did to get them all down there but it worked."
We look around the roof. There is one person still there. Ellis. I tap Zayn and nod towards her. He squints his eyes then shrugs, "I guess we are taking her." He steps forward towards her.
I put my hand on his chest stopping him, "Taking her? What? No. How do we know we can trust her? She might just slow us down or tell someone."
"Luna, I'm leading and I'm calling this shot." He says, his wide eyes a chocolate color.
Dropping my hand I step back "Ok, but can I talk to her?"
He agrees. And I approach her, "Ellis?" I say in my lightest tone. "We have reason to think someone stole my memory and we have their address... would you like to come with us?"
She shakes her head. I open my mouth "Ok well, you know... can you just act like you never saw us?" She opens her mouth, about to say something, then pauses and just nods her head.
"Thank you, Ellis." And I walk back to them.
Zayn walks to the back of the roof, behind the elevator. "Which way is Missouri street, Abbot?"
Abbot looks around. I forget he grew up here. "That way." he points to the right.
"So what we do is, who wants to go first?"
"I will." Nevx steps forward.
"Alright just take the ladder down." Zayn points.
I look down and straight down the side is a ladder. With no railing.
"Don't be worried. It's secure."
"I was not worried." Nevx fires back.
"Well, I bet Abbot was." He leans on his hip slightly.
Abbot shrugs. He is. Nevx goes first. She starts moving down the steps rapidly. Then Abbot follows. He is clearly very nervous about it.
When it turns I try as hard as I can not look down. "Was this your idea or mine?" I ask.
He gives off a small laugh "Mine. It took me so long to convince you it would work."
I shake my head "Sounds about right." I start to move down the ladder. I look straight ahead and keep on moving. Don't look down. Don't look down. I try to even my breathing. I have to stop to wipe each hand on my jeans. They have started to excessively sweat. The handles are ice cold. Which my hands stick to because they are getting so sweaty. After a minute I look and am happy to see we are almost halfway down. Thank god. I only have to stop two more times to wipe my sweat before we are done.
Never again, I think. But that's probably what I thought last time. I have a couple of beads of sweat trickling down.
We walk a couple of blocks, and after a few Zayn and Abbot would make sure we were going the right way. The streets were very empty except for when we passed clubs. Everyone in line has the A on their left wrist. It is weird to see anything other than an F.
The streets are filled with the fresh black pavement. The streets are very clean. I could walk miles no problem compared to the gravel in Ferris. The actual sidewalk is a bright white without a single mark or off-colored space. They must clean these every day.
There are what Abbot calls cars. All lined up and down the street. Every once in awhile one will glide by.
After probably 20 mins. I get so thirsty I can't hold it in, "Where is the closest water fountain?"
"There are none of those here." Nevx answers.
Abbot turns "Don't worry only about 5 minutes until we are there." Then all of them at once stop in the middle of the street. I bump into Zayn's back.
"Is that?" Zayn says. Puzzled. They are all looking at someone across the street.
"That is..." Abbot answers.
I look at the man across the street he is hard to make out in the dark, but I see enough to know I don't recognize him.
"No, It can't be. But he's not from Aleph." Abbot it in utter disbelief.
They all cross the street towards him so I follow.
"Remi!" Abbot shouts.
The boy, Remi, has brown hair that is down to his chin. Remi looks at us then takes off running. They break out into a run after him and I follow behind trying to keep up. I keep up pretty well but I'm so lost in my mind. Who is this? Why is he running away from us? After blocks and blocks of running, I lost count after 4, Zayn tackles him.
"Remi? Why are you running?" He asks. His hands pinning down his shoulders. "How are you here? They let you stay in Aleph?" Remi slides a needle out of his pocket. I'm the only one who sees it.
"Zayn, the needle!" I lurch forward; thinking he will hurt Zayn but Remi stabs it into his own thigh and presses down before Zayn pulls it out.
"Remi what is this? Abbot shakes him. Zayn pulls the needle out and tries to figure out what it is.
Remi slowly closes his eyes.
"Remi!" Abbot shakes him and I see a couple of tears start to roll down his face. "What is it? Remi! How can we help?"
Remi closes his eyes. He is gone. Abbot shakes him. "Remi! No!"
Zayn backs up.
"No Zayn, come on, we have to do something!" Abbot yells. He starts to shake.
"Abbot!" Nevx pulls him up. "He's gone." She says harshly to break it through to his mind. Tears drip from Abbot's face like we are in a movie.
Nevx pats his back. "Come on we should leave guys. We don't want to be here when the police come." We start walking back up the street to get back on track. Nevx and Abbot walk in the back. Nevx with her arm around him.
"Who was he?" I ask under my breath to Zayn. I feel bad for not knowing. Not being able to understand Abbot's pain.
"He was chosen for the program. Didn't pass the test so he got kicked out. He and Abbot are," He pauses for half a second. "We're very close."
"That doesn't make sense why would he-"
"I don't know Luna. I don't know."
