Chapter 7
The day finished out slowly. Class finished around six and we were sent to the deck to eat dinner. The sun was setting which made it absolutely stunning. In my head, the whole world was graffiti and grey and a couple of patches of grass for people to escape.
We all sat together and ate and drank. This time Ellis, the girl who sleeps in the top bed across from me, who is yet to speak a word, sits with us. I wonder what her voice sounds like. After we eat, I can't help myself. I have to go up to the rails to see the sunset. Pink and orange fill the sky in streams. I wish Haven and Taylor could be here and see this. This gives me hope for some odd reason. I guess that there is still some beauty in this world.
Zayn walks up which makes me instantly stiffen, "If you don't want to get screamed at by Nevx you should move."
"What's up with Ellis?" I disregard his suggestion.
He is fully leaning on the glass panel guarding you against falling to our deaths. I'm not that brave. I am standing a couple a foot or 2 away from it. I think of how Haven would be standing if he was here. He would probably be acting like he was going to fall over the edge just to make me laugh.
He shrugs, "She has not talked since we got here."
He quickly turns and walks away. I can tell he is eager to get away from me. Well, the feeling is mutual.
After dinner, everyone stays there talking and laughing. It is completely dark. "Ok, let's play never have I ever," Fischer says.
My mind goes into panic mode, "Actually guys I think I better head down," I start to stand up. "I barely got any sleep last night." I rub my eyes.
"Oh come on," September says "since when does Luna miss out on a game."
"No, I barely got any sleep last night also," Zayn chimes in, "I think I'll head down with you."
I scan my id, and we enter the silver machine. "Thanks." I lean against the wall closing my eyes.
He nods "Yeah. It's an elevator by the way."
I bobble my head up and down. We ride down to our floor and I'm glad that he is there because I am completely disoriented about where our room is.
"You have not talked all night." He points out to me.
"Yeah, I know." I want to tell him that it's because I'm scared of blowing my cover. But I don't want to make small talk with him. Not after my dream. Right, when I decided to blurt this out. "So I really liked it here?"
He shrugs, "Yeah, you did."
I can't wrap my head around it. Me liking aleph. Then I realize now is the moment to confront him about lying to everyone. I have to just say it. Rip it off like a bandage. But I'm once again scared. I hesitate for a second but curiosity wins out. This time I'm glad it does. "I know you lied." We walk past the cafeteria. I sound more casual than I mean to. I wanted more of a forceful tone.
He pauses for a second then scratches the back of his head. "What are you talking about?"
"I know you lied," I repeat. "Something else happened that night that you didn't tell me or anyone." I raise my voice.
He clears his throat, "I told you what happened that night."
I wish I was stronger so I could get the answer out of him rather than having this back and forth. "No, you didn't!" I raise my voice. Maybe this will make him take me seriously. "I know you lied. I don't know what happened but I'm starting to get a feeling you were involved with whatever happened with my incident."
He paused and for a second I think he is about to get emotional. Great, now I feel bad.
"What?" I ask still making my voice firm. Trying to at least.
"I just can't believe you don't trust me." His voice is steady. I cancel out the idea of emotional, more like disturbed.
"How am I supposed to? I don't know you."
He stops in the middle of walking "That's the thing, Luna. You do know me. You can trust me. I know you don't remember but before whatever happened we were close!" He sighs.
"You do understand that anyone could say that. That doesn't mean anything."
"It's just crazy that you don't-"
"Yeah, I know. So weird I don't remember." I press my hands into the sides of my head. "You are all more hung up about it then I am, and I'm the one who lost my memory." Now I don't have to fake my voice. I really am mad.
He is silent. Contemplating something. One side gives in and he says, "I know about Taylor's mom."
I take my hands down and my feed freeze, "What?"
"I know about Taylor's mom."
"Who told you?" My palms are starting to sweat.
"You... you told me last week because I had mom issues also... Look I know you can't trust me but can you trust yourself."
He makes a good point. She obviously has to know and trust him. So was my dream wrong? Is just my brain being... imaginative?
"So you did tell the truth when you told the story?" I try to demand but my voice comes out soft.
Zayn looks around scanning for something. Then he grabs my arm and drags me back to our room. When we get there he leans in close. "Look I was going to wait a couple of days to let you adjust then tell you but if you insist then here." He pauses. His face inches away from mine. "I was telling the truth about the party, losing you then some guy carrying you back, and me running back. Everything was completely true."
He breathes out and looks out the windows "I just left a part out." His eyes are big. I would almost say look scared. Of what? "When I was running back with you like I said you were in and out of it. But you said some stuff. Now I don't know if it's true because you might have been hallucinating or..."
"What did I say?" I demand.
"You said that earlier that day you were walking around and you saw something, something that if anyone figured out you saw they would kill you. You lost concession out then but you were slurring 'it's a trap' a couple of times. Then you stopped talking and I really thought you were dead. I was running so I could not check your pulse, but soon after you came back for a minute. Then you were out again. And soon enough we were here and your memory was wiped."
"It's all a trap," I whisper. That's what the man said the night of the elections. "So someone did this on purpose?" I glance out the window, which now shows the glare and just our reflection.
"Yeah, I guess."
Then something occurs to me. "I was supposed to die but they just wiped my memory instead?"
"That's what I was thinking, whoever it was probably thought it was too suspicious to kill you or I don't know. I was going to wait a couple of days for you to settle in."
"I didn't say anything about what I saw?"
He shakes his head, "No when you came back I asked you and you said that if you told me the same thing might happen to me too. You thought you were going to die also."
"That's why I was acting weird," I mumble. The pieces are coming together.
"What?"
"September asked me if I was okay. She said all yesterday I was acting weird... I thought I was going to die." I start breathing heavily. The thought of me walking around all day knowing death was coming but not wanting to tell anyone because I didn't want to hurt them. Which gives me another reason to trust all this. I obviously cared for and trusted these people to not tell them.
"That's probably why you wanted to go to the party. You thought it would be one of your last nights."
"Who carried me to you?" I look back up meeting his eyes.
He shakes his head "I don't know I wish I did. It was a boy, in his 20's... blond hair. He looked so familiar but I could never place him to where we met. I think he works in this building. That might be why he looks familiar."
"Was there anything distinct about him?"
"No, I was panicking and it was dark. The music was loud. Well, there is one thing..."
"What?" I ask eggar.
"The guy had a tattoo of his finger of a sun."
"Joshua" I whisper.
"Who?"
"Did you watch the elections?" I ask
"Yeah of course..."
"The guy who hosted it, did it look like him?"
"Luna..." He squints his eyes thinking hard trying to picture both of them, "I think it did." His mouth opens, "Yes, it did Luna! That was him."
"Well we better get good sleep," I say. "Because tomorrow after we finish dinner we are finding him."
