07:17 PM. THE DARK SEA

"so what now?" astrid asks, getting hiccup's attention. y/n coos at midnight, stroking her neck. "hiccup, your final exam is tomorrow,"

y/n looks between them curiously. final exam? 

"you know you'll have to-" hiccup gives her a look and she hushes up. there is something going on. 

midnight growls, her ears tilting as y/n furrows her eyebrows in concern. toothless tenses up, light clicking and rumbling coming from him. 

"skoros iksis pirta?" y/n asks midnight, but she's flying with purpose. and it's not a purpose y/n has given her. this is something else. 

"toothless, midnight?" hiccup asks, looking down at the dragons. "what's happening?"

"down!" y/n whispers, putting her head against midnight's back as a monstrous nightmare joins toothless' side. astrid joins her as hiccup does the same to toothless. 

midnight flies under toothless, trying to hide y/n. her hair is white, it should be the easiest thing to be seen in the dark. but some dragons are stupid. 

"what's going on?" astrid asks, looking around. 

"i do not know," y/n says. "midnight, sōvegon paktot toothless," midnight flies up, besides her brother as y/n looks at hiccup. "are you alright?" she whispers. he nods, seeing all the dragons flying around. did dragons usually fly as a collective?

"toothless, midnight, you've got to get us out of here," hiccup sets a hand on toothless' head, but the dragon shakes it off, ignoring him. 

"it appears to be that they are hauling in their kill," y/n says, taking note of the the dead sheep and dead animals in the other dragon's clutches. 

"uh...what does that make us?" astrid timidly asks. 

"we are not dead. and we are not their kill. we are their riders, astrid," y/n says. "no harm will come to us as our dragons are still breathing,"

y/n holds her breath as the dragons begin to dive with speed, astrid yelling out. midnight and toothless twist and turn together, manoeuvring through the tall rocks, in a way to make sure that they are close to each other and their riders and the other human do not fall or get hurt. 

"hiccup," y/n states, looking up at the volcano that has came into view with wide eyes. the boy gasps, looking up. 

the dragons enter small tunnels, making the two vikings yell as midnight and toothless follow them. it was pitch black for a few seconds, until the lava illuminated the inside of the volcano, a hot orange. dragon cries echo off the walls, hiccup and astrid squinting their eyes from the heat. but fire does not effect the three dragons. 

"what my dad wouldn't give to find this..." hiccup breathes out. y/n watches as the dragon's drop the dead animals into the depth of the volcano. 

"a dragon's nest," y/n mutters. "of course, why am i not astounded by this discovery?" she turns around, looking seeing somewhere that they could hide. and midnight is thinking the exact same thing. she swoops onto a ledge, toothless doing the same. 

"well, it's satisfying to know that all our food has been dumped down into a hole," hiccup scoffs. 

"they're not eating any of it," astrid agrees in confusion. 

"i am under the assumption that we are about to find out why," y/n motions to the gronckle, flying over the fog as it buzz lightly. 

it vomits out a small fish into the fog, going to fly away. but a low snarl is heard from the fog, making midnight snarl. y/n shushes her, putting her hand on midnight's head. a large dragon's head appears from the fog and swallows the dragon whole. 

"what is that?" astrid asks, all the other dragons going into their hiding space. the larger dragon peeks out the fog, flaring its nostrils. y/n's eyes narrow as she rubs midnight's head. 

"it has taken our scent," y/n states. "we must leave that this very moment," 

"alright, bud," toothless tilts his head, looking at hiccup. "we got to get out of here...now!" midnight roars, shoving toothless out of the way as soon as the larger dragon goes to take a bite at them. the rests of the dragons in the nest follow, panic flurrying around. of course, they follow. they do not want to get eaten. 

"midnight!" y/n shouts, midnight moving toothless out of the way again as the two boys almost get eaten.

"it totally makes sense," astrid says as they fly onto the shore of berk. "it's like a giant beehive. they the workers and that's their queen. it control them," midnight lands softly, astrid swiftly jumping off her. "let's find your dad,"

"no! no," hiccup says, getting off toothless. 

"and what would happen if the chief was aware of a targaryen and her dragons living in woods?" y/n asks, still hitting on top of midnight. she looks at midnight, her violet eyes glinting under the moonlight. hiccup is mesmerised. will he admit it? probably if he was asked. he has nothing to hide. "would we live?"

"i..." astrid falters. 

"you can't tell him," hiccup says, gaining astrid's attention. "not yet. i don't know what will happen to them. they...they could kill toothless and midnight," he whispers, not even wanting to think about it. he doesn't even know what would happen to y/n. y/n slides off midnight, clasping her hands behind her back. "we have to think through this carefully,"

"hiccup, we just discovered-"

"i do not care what we have discovered," y/n says. "i do not care if it is a gold mine to your kind. i do not care that this could save you. if my dragons come into any type of harm, i will personally destroy you and the rest of the vikings on this island," hiccup looks at y/n with his big green eyes and she looks back at him. 

"fine," astrid relents, seeing the seriousness on their faces and in their stances. "okay. then what do we do?"

"just give me until tomorrow," hiccup says, running his hand down his face. "i'll figure something out," he turns to y/n, who's looking up at the night sky. "y/n?"

"yes, hiccup?" she turns to him, their eyes meeting. 

"i'm not going to let anything happen to you," what is this feeling? y/n's cheeks go warm as she holds eye contact with him. is this love? is this what her father felt for her mother? 

"i am sure i can protect myself if something does," she says. 

"still," hiccup shrugs. "i'm going to protect to you,"

y/n raises her eyebrow with a smile. she leans in, kissing hiccup on the cheek. his face goes red as y/n turns to astrid. he kicks a rock with a goofy smile on his face. toothless lets out a roaring laugh as midnight starts to nuzzle against hiccup. 

"w-what are you looking at?" hiccup whispers to toothless, trying to not smile but he can't help it. he puts his hand on midnight's head. this is the second kiss now! gods, does he kiss her back? should he ever do that? would she even like it? he doesn't even know how to kiss. how does he do it? should he practice?

"may we commence a truce?" she says to astrid, putting her hand out. astrid looks at y/n's face before looking at her hand. the blonde puts her hand in y/n's, giving it a shake. wow. that's a really strong grip.
