Chapter 1

"Bye mom, bye Lizzie!" I yelled, leaving the house to embark on my 15 minute walk to school.
A faint "Try not to shout, dear" met my ears, and i grinned internally.  I loved shouting, but my mother thought of it as abusing my power to talk normally.
I loved my mum, who’d come from a horrid upbringing in a neglectful family, to a life of luxurity, after getting a degree in English Language and becoming the editor of the magazine Vogue.
Skipping over cracks in the pavement, i reflected on how my mother got her life back together and how strong she was. She was 17 when she was raped at a party and 18 when she had me. She gave me up to a foster home while she got her life sorted after being abandoned by her family. But she rescued me. When i was 7 years old, she came and saved me from the bullies, the teasing and taunting, and gave me new life. In the 7 years we'd been parted, she had successfully gained a degree and started work at a magazine company, gradually working her way up, and before long she was working at the highest point in editing. She bought a house for us , a big one at that, but she was never proud or haughty. She always said to me, "you have to have come from nothing to truly understand what its worth to have everything".
Suddenly, a crash  distracted me from my thoughts as I realised that I hadnt been paying attention to where I was walking and I'd ended up my favorite spot. It was only a bench, but it meant more to me than anything in the world, maybe excluding my mother.
The crash had been made by my knee, which had banged into the tin bottom of the bench and I hurriedly rubbed it, to expel the sting, then ran the rest of the way to school.
At school, my day improved. I was chosen, for the third time in a row, to be student  council leader for the year.
I began my speech of thanks, and many of my peers blinked tiredly, but this didn't put me off. On the contrary, it made me all the more eager to say the speech. After saying the main part, I finished off.
"I would like to once again thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to become, your faithful, passionate, and empathetic Student Council Leader of 2016. So thank you for this privilege."
A rather dispirited round of applause followed my 17 minutes and 32 seconds long speech, however i didn't allow this to dishearten my feeling of utter contentment. Now there would be something new to add to the interrogation at Supper tonight.
I jumped off of the podium, ran into the hallway, checked my watch and counted down, " Five, Four, Three, Two, and...."  the bell rang on cue, and I smiled to myself as my peers started to mill out of the doors. "One."
And i ran home, timing myself to try and beat my 7 minutes and 10 seconds record.
