Chapter 13 - Back In The Game

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Present

"Hey Bobby." The cheerful girl chimed in. Bobby nearly dropped the phone right then and there. No, it wasn't possible. How could she be there? With Dean no less.

"Kate?" Bobby questioned. His voice cracked slightly at the mention of her name. He couldn't see her over the phone, but he could tell that she was smiling.

"Yeah, it's me Bobby." She laughed. "I'm not dead." Bobby couldn't help but smile at her comment. Damn it was good to hear her voice.

"It's been a while Trouble." He joked.  Kate scoffed over the phone. Trouble was Bobby's nickname for her. When the Winchesters were still just kids, they used to hang out at Bobby's. Kate, being the oldest, was always the one causing trouble; hence the nickname.

"At least I'm not the one causing it anymore." She joked. Bobby smiled at the floor of his house.

"Yeah we'll see about that."

"Uh! I've been upstairs for the past 28 years, Sam and Dean are the ones causing trouble."

"Hey." Dean yelled.

"No offense." Kate corrected. Bobby could practically see Dean's expression to that.

"Hey Bobby." Dean said louder into the phone. "We gotta work the case, we'll talk to you later okay?"

"Alright, be careful ya idjits."

"Will do." And with that, the line went dead.

Bobby stood frozen in his hallway. He hung the phone back onto the wall and stood silent. Kate was back. Better yet, she found Sam and Dean and they even remembered her. He smiled and moved to the kitchen. He needed a drink.

"Will do." Dean answered and hung up the phone. Just then the detective stepped into the conference room.

"Agents." He greeted. He held out his hand, Dean was the first to shake it followed by Kate.

"Shane and Reynolds." Kate said confidently. The detective nodded in acknowledgement.

"Well agents, I'd love to stay and talk to you but it seems that we've found another body. One of the other board members of the foresting company. Here is the case folder, feel free to debrief yourselves." The detective handed Dean a grey folder.

"Mind if we tag along to the crime scene?" Kate asked. The detective shrugged and nodded. Dean and Kate stepped out of the conference room and made their way to the door. Once they were outside, they climbed into the Impala.

"That was a nice show you put on in there." Dean complimented.

Kate smiled, "I worked a few cases while I was here on Earth." Dean was proud of his sister. "Can I drive?"

"No." Just then Dean's phone started ringing. He pulled it out of his pocket. "Yeah?" Kate couldn't hear the other person in the phone. "Okay, yeah we'll come get you." Dean ended the call and stuffed the phone back in his pocket. "We gotta go get Sam."

"Can I drive?"

"No."

______

Kate and Dean rode in silence to the morgue. A Bon Jovi song played softly on the radio. As Dean pulled into the parking lot, he caught sight of Sam walking out the door. He pulled over, allowing Kate to move to the backseat and Sam to slide into the front.

"What'd ya find out?" Dean asked as he pulled out of the parking lot.

"Well, the body belonged to a Don Smith. He was head of the deforestation company, Oregon Canopy. The body was found on site of the project. And get this, the body was found strangled by the roots of one of the trees. As in, the body was literally wrapped in the roots mummy style."

"Oh well that's not creepy." Dean states.

"What kind of tree has roots that can do that?" Kate questions from the back seat.

"Not many."

The siblings ride in silence to the latest crime scene. They arrive at the deforestation site where the second body has been found. Kate, Dean, and Sam step out of the Impala and make their way to the edge of the clearing. Police are scattered around the crime scene laying out police tape.

The three siblings simultaneously flash their fake IDs and the police let them through. Kate noticed detective Walsh speaking to a police officer. She approached him with a commanding presence. Dean followed in pursuit while Sam investigated the body.

"Detective Walsh." Kate greeted.

"Agent Shane, Reynolds. Who's your friend?" He gestured to Sam.

"My partner, agent Guard." Dean stated.

"Detective can you tell us what happened here?"

"Well the body was found this afternoon around 1:00 by one of the workers. Victim was Andy Blackwood, another board member on Oregon Canopy." Walsh walked to where the body was being covered in a tarp. He pulled up the tarp to reveal the body covered in a bright red rash. The rash covered the entire body head to toe.

"Is that poison ivy?"

"Poison oak to be exact. The wierd thing is that the victim had no signs of poison oak yesterday. He was totally clean and today, it seems to have killed him." Walsh covered the body. Just then his phone started to ring. He stepped away to answer, leaving the Winchesters to themselves.

"I'm gonna go take a bath in hand sanitizer." Kate muttered.

"Any idea what we're dealing with?" Dean questioned.

"There's no EMF and no sulfur." Sam stated.

"What about hex bags? Could be a witch."

"I didn't see any hex bags on the first victim."

"Well whatever we're dealing with definitely has it out for Oregon Canopy."

"It's even killing them naturally." Kate joked. Dean and Sam glared at her. "Oh come on! That was funny."

______

Three hours later the siblings had gone back to the motel. Sam was busy  researching on his laptop about Oregon Canopy while Dean searched through their Dad's journal. There was a knock on the door and Kate stepped in with two boxes of pizza along with a six pack of beer.

"I wasn't sure what to get so I got the classics." She announced. Sam and Dean nodded, neither one looking up from their research. Kate set the pizza on the table and opened a box of sausage pizza. She took four slices and put them on a paper plate and put the other four onto another. She picked up the plates and handed them to her brothers.

They each said a quiet thank you and went about their research. It was strange yet familiar. Even as adults, Kate was still talking care of her little brothers.

She picked up the box of pepperoni and walked over to the couch. She pulled out her own laptop, even though it was actually Dean's. She typed into the web browser "Brownsville Forest, Oregon" and hit search.

"Hey so apperantly Oregon Canopy has been planning to clear this forest for years. But the land is sacred and they had to get past a whole lot of obstacles to get to where they are now." Sam spoke up.

"What kind of sacred?" Dean asked.

"As far as I can tell the woods are haunted. Over 73 deaths occurred in those woods over the past 20 years, and those are just the ones that they know of."

"Well it's no ghost, no EMF at the crime scene."

"So are we thinking a witch coven? There could be a witch's den in there."

"Possibly."

"Kate?" Sam asked, snapping Kate back to reality.  She looked up at him blankly. Sam noticed her pale expression and nervous posture. "Are you okay?"

Kate's expression quickly switched to a bright smile. "Yeah." She answered sweetly.

Sam knew when his sister was lying. Her expression had changed too fast for it to be nothing. He decided to let it go. This was her first case with them since she died, she probably just needed space. Maybe she was still adjusting to life with her big little brothers.

"Why don't we go check out the woods tomorrow?" Kate offered. "Maybe see if we can find something that the police missed."

"Sounds like a plan." Dean grumbled. He stretched his arms and closed his Dad's journal. He leaned back in his chair and yawned.

"Go to bed Dean."

Sam looked at Dean then at Kate. "Kate we're not kids anymore."

"It's after midnight. I think we all need sleep if we wanna be at our best tomorrow." Kate shut her laptop and proceeded to walk over to Sam and confiscate his. "Come on boys, go to bed."
