Chapter 12 - A Life After Death?

Brownsville, Oregon: present day

Dean said nothing as he tied the laces on his shoes. He glanced up at Sam who had a tooth brush half in his mouth.

Sam looked over to the pullout couch where Kate was sprawled out. She still held the pillow tight against her chest, but her legs were contorted and twisted in what looked like an uncomfortable position.

He looked back at Dean, "Are you gonna wake her up?"

Dean gave him a look of horror. There was no way in hell he would try to wake her up. Dean made his hand into a fist and placed it on his open palm. Rock, paper, scissors would decide who woke the sleeping angel.

Sam mimicked the position and on three the brothers smacked their fists onto their palms. Sam threw rock and Dean threw scissors. Dean grumbled at his loss; nevertheless he made his way to Kate's sleeping form.

He sat on the side of the bed next to Kate. He hesitantly shook her shoulder. "Kate." He said soothingly.

Kate's eyes shot wide open, in an instant she was on top of her brother. She pulled a small knife from underneath her pillow and held it against Dean's neck.

"Whoa whoa whoa!" Dean shouted. Kate realized what she had done and lowered the knife. She stood and helped her brother to his feet.

"Sorry." She said sheepishly. "Force of habit."

"No problem." Dean replied, still trying to recover from the surprise attack.

That was when Kate noticed the fed suits her brothers were wearing. "You guys goin somewhere?"

"The morgue, we need to see the body to get an idea of what we're dealing with." Sam stated as he tied his shoes.

"Great I'll come with you." Kate grabbed her duffel and was about to head to the bathroom when Dean stopped her.

"Not so fast Sparky. You may have the mental capacity of an adult, but you gotta remember that your body is only 16."

"19." Kate muttered under her breath.

"Excuse me?" Dean asked startled. Kate cursed to herself, Dean wasn't supposed to hear that comment. She sighed and took a seat.

"This body does not age in heaven..." There was a long pause "but it does on Earth."

Dean gave Sam a look. "What, are you saying that you spent three years on Earth after you died?" He was fuming with frustration.

Kate was silent, she solemnly nodded her head.

"Well why didn't you come get us? We could have helped you!" Dean shouted.

"You think I didn't want to!" Kate yelled as she stood toe to toe with her brother. "I wanted to come running to you boys as soon as I got here, but you know what stopped me? Monsters... demons.... angels, heck even the king of hell decided to throw his hat in the ring! All of them decided to pick a fight with the mortal angel who just so happened to be a Winchester. By the way, thanks for making the family name a target for all monsters."

Kate's face burned red hot with rage. Her brothers were getting on to her for not coming to them, not knowing the struggles she had gone through in the mean time. Dean was silent. Kate pushed past her brother and stormed into the bathroom.

As she changed out of her pajamas, she stared at her broken body. The scars that ran down her back and legs were haunting. They didn't hurt as bad as they used to, but they would always remind her of the pain. She quickly covered himself in a snazzy pantsuit. She had been saving this suit for the chance to solve a case with her little brothers. She pulled her long dirty blonde hair into a ponytail and put on her basic makeup; eye liner and mascara. She checked herself in the mirror one last time before sighing and stepping out of the bathroom.

Dean was waiting for her when she stepped out. He said nothing, just wrapped her in a hug. Kate hugged him back, pressing her head against his chest. She felt Dean's hand run through her ponytail. This was his way of apologizing, there were no words just each other's prescense. She felt his lips press against her forehead and he let go. Kate looked into his eyes, those same hazel green eyes.

"I know." Kate said solemnly.

"No you don't." Dean said sadly yet firmly. "We had no idea you were out there, and if we did know,"

"But you didn't." Kate interrupted. "You didn't know I was out there and you didn't know I was in trouble... I don't blame you."

Dean said nothing. Kate pulled him into another hug. "We're all safe Dean. I'm safe, Sammy's safe; you don't have to worry." Kate let go of her not so little brother. "Speaking of which, were is Sammy?" She asked, noticing that the moose was gone.

"He went to go load the car." Dean answered, grabbing his suit jacket and room key. Kate slipped on the dress shoes that complimented her pant suit add stepped out the door.

______

"Agents Reynolds and Shane." Dean stated holding up his fake FBI badge. Kate did the same, before tucking it back into her jacket pocket. The siblings had decided to make a stop at the police station to talk to the people in charge of the investigation. Sam was currently at the morgue, taking a look at the body. The police officer turned to Kate, he gave her a look.

"Ah," Dean gestured, noticing his suspicion "trainee." he stated trying to back up their story.

"Seriously?" The officer asked.

"Officer are you questioning a federal agent?"

"As a matter of a fact, I am. Agents I'd like to speak with your supervisor."

Dean gave him a look and reached into his coat pocket. He pulled out a card and handed it to the officer. The officer took the card and picked up a phone hanging on the wall next to him. he punched in the numbers and the dial tone began to ring. The phone was loud enough for both Kate and Dean to hear as a gruff voice answered the phone.

"Willis, FBI."

"Agent Willis, this is officer Grey at the Brownsville police department in Brownsville Oregon. I've got a couple of agents here by the names of Reynolds and Shane."

"Reynolds and Shane, yep two of our finest agents here at the department. I sent them down there to work a case a few days ago. Are those boys just now getting there?"

"Um yes sir, but I think you're a bit confused."

"And what do you mean by that?"

"Well one of your agents is a lady. Says she's a trainee."

Kate blushed a little bit under her freckle dotted face. There was a long pause on the other end of the line.

"Ah. Little Shane, yeah we have more than one agent Shane on the force. Now do you have anything else you wanna waste my time with?" He snapped.

"No sir, have a good day." With that the police officer hung up the phone. "Alright, looks like you agents are good to go." Officer Grey led them through the door and into the heart of the police station. Kate followed behind Dean as they walked to a conference room.

"I'll go get detective Walsh." The officer said before leaving and shutting the door behind him.

"Who was that on the phone?" Kate asked.

"Bobby." Dean answered.

"Of course." Kate muttered, she hated to admit it but she missed the old man. "He clearly didn't know that I was tagging along."

"Ya think?" Dean said sarcastically. Just then Dean's cell phone started ringing. He pulled it out of his jacket and answered.

"Bobby hold on I'm gonna put you on speaker." Dean pressed a button and held it between himself and Kate. "Okay go."

"Where's Sam?" Bobby questioned, cutting to the chase.

"The morgue." Dean answered.

"Then who are you with?"

"Hey Bobby." Kate chimed in. There was a long silence on the other end of the receiver.

"Kate?"
