Part 9: The Attack
Rabbitmoon was listening to Rosestar about the patrols and ranks. But he wasn't listening because he was thinking about the dream he had last night. It was just a dream, right? But it didn't feel like a regular dream. He promised himself to stay on his paws.
"... and what do you think?" Rosestar finished. She looked at Rabbitmoon expectantly then frowned. "What's wrong?"
Rabbitmoon shook his head to clear it. "Nothing. It's just... I had a dream." Then he started telling her all about his dream.
When he finished, Rosestar smiled. "I don't know what that means, but you could go ask Niko for help. She seems to know about this kind of stuff." Then she licked him and walked away.
Rabbitmoon decided to take her advice. He padded to the Sick-Paw part of the den, separated by a big leaf to contain sickness and herbs. He pushed aside it and walked in.
Niko was hunched over, organizing herbs. She didn't see Rabbitmoon.
Rabbitmoon cleared his throat. "Um, Niko?"
Niko jumped, startled. "Ahh, Rabbitmoon! You scared me!" She licked her fur down from where it was bristling from shock. "Anyway, what can I do for you?"
Rabbitmoon sat down. "I had a dream, and I need you to interpret it for me." He began to tell her his dream.
"Well," she began when he finished. "It certainly sounds like you had a very important dream to me. I don't think that was a joke. I think it was real."
Rabbitmoon sighed. "I hope not. If it is real, when will the attack be? I need to know so we can be-" He was interrupted by a loud commotion outside. He and Niko slipped outside to look.
Chance, Rosestar, and Branch were fighting a figure. Rabbitmoon smelled a scent he hoped he would never have to smell again.
Vulpes.
Rabbitmoon gasped. "It's the attack! Go, go, GO!" He yelled. He launched himself into battle. He landed on top of the giant fox-cat's furry back. He bit and clawed at the enemy, trying to kill him.
Chance wasn't good at fighting; he was meant to be a Hunter. So Vulpes swiped a paw at Chance, knocking him aside like a flea. Chance hit his head on a rock and didn't get up.
Rabbitmoon was filled with rage. He climbed the fox-cat and looked him in the eyes.
"This is for Chance!" He hissed. He swiped at Vulpes's eyes, blinding him. Vulpes hissed in rage, twisting and turning. Rabbitmoon was thrown off, but landed on his feet.
Rosestar looked like a pack of wild dogs when she attacked Vulpes. She literally was killing him. Rabbitmoon smiled and hopped back in the fight.
Suddenly Vulpes raised up on his hind legs, and started growing. He grew to twice his normal size and roared.
Rabbitmoon' eyes got wide. "Run!" He screeched at his clan. He took of with the other cats following. Vulpes followed them.
They kept on running until they couldn't see or hear Vulpes anymore. They stopped, panting.
"Do we... have everyone?" Asked Rabbitmoon, counting with his paw. They all counted and suddenly Chance yelled.
"Sky!"
