Part 1: The First Cat
Scarlett's kitting was alone and rainy. She kitted in the middle of the woods alone. She had three kits but two died from improper care. The runt survived. She named him Rabbit.
A FEW YEARS LATER
Rabbit was running and playing with his adopted sister Sky. She was found wet and cold dying by herself in the city in the sewer. His mother Scarlet took her home and brought her back to health.
Sky was very fast. Rabbit was slow but strong. Sky was lithe and small. Rabbit was puffing for breath when Sky was perfect.
"C'mon slowpoke!" She yelled at him. She was prancing around like the ground was hot. "I'm in the mood to run! I'll race you to the River. Ready, set, GO!" She took off like a rocket and down the hill.
Rabbit sighed. He would never be as good as her. He padded after her. He watched his surroundings as he walked after her. He saw a bird flying to her nest. He saw her feed her babies. He smiled warmly. Life was perfect.
Suddenly he heard the bushes rustle. He turned and saw something lurking in the darkness. He turned in a full circle, searching around him.
Suddenly something leaped at him. His eyes got wide and the only thing he saw was long claws glistening in the sun as the animal jumped on him.
Rabbit tried to fight back but he was only 2 years old. Scarlet said she would teach them to fight at three. He had no clue what to do.
The animal was a cat. It fought very good. It scratched and tore and bit and clawed. Rabbit had no chance.
Suddenly Rabbit noticed something. A small hole where the cat's leg was. It was bleeding and something white was inside it. Rabbit peered closer. He struggled to move his head next to it. He pulled it out and the cat gasped. The cat struggled free of Rabbit.
"T-thank you!" It gasped. It was pretty. It was a female too. She was white. She had one green eye and one blue eye.
The thing Rabbit pulled out of her was something that kinda looked like a tooth. It was white and sharp. It looked like she had been in a fight and someone's tooth got lodged in her leg.
"That tooth was stuck in my leg since yesterday when I fought this cat that was really sick. His mouth was foamy add his eyes... His eyes were... black. Pure black. Thank you little..." she said gratefully.
"Rabbit." Rabbit answered kindly. "I'm Rabbit. But actually I'm very slow.
Not- not fast like a rabbit. You know rabbits are pretty fast... okay I'm getting carried away again. Sorry my bad!" He smiled awkwardly. The cat laughed.
"I'm Niko. And it's okay, Rabbit. That happens to me too sometimes." She said giggling.
"Um, Niko. Do you want to come live with me? And my sister Sky, and my mother Scarlet?" Rabbit asked. He liked her; she was funny. But she looked homeless. Her coat was dull, her claws were blunt, and her eyes were sparkling but with inside excitement.
"Uh, Rabbit, is that okay with your family?" Niko said. She didn't think it was a good idea. Living with someone she just met? She didn't think so.
"Yah! Well... you stay here and I'll bring my mother and Sky, okay? Be right back!" He yelled, running towards home. He never stopped running until he was home. He was panting and puffing.
"Hey... Mother... I found... this cat named... Niko. Can she live with us?" He managed. Scarlet looked at him like he was a fox.
"Live with us? I don't know..." she said uncertainly. Suddenly Rabbit grabbed her paw and rushed away towards the place where he left Niko.
When they got there, Scarlet looked a little scared. "I'm Scarlet." She said, eyes narrowed.
"Hello, Scarlet. Are you Rabbit's mother? Where's his father?" Niko asked. Suddenly Scarlet's face fell.
"He- he died."
"Oh, I'm sorry." She replied with sympathy. Niko felt bad then.
Rabbit was so into their conversation that's he forgot about Sky.
"Be right back!" He exclaimed, running towards the hills. Soon he reappeared with Sky on his paws.
"Oh hello there... Niko?" Sky said. She wanted to make sure she said the name right.
"Yes. Are you Sky?" Niko asked. She liked Sky's yellow coat. Her eyes were hazel.
Rabbit was dark gray except with light gray hair over his eyes, and light gray tail and paws. He thought Sky was very pretty.
Scarlet was brown. Her eyes were also hazel while Rabbit's were yellow. Scarlet said Rabbit got his looks from his father and Rabbit was dying to meet him.
Scarlet shifted her paws. "So my son,"- she stopped to glare at Rabbit - "Has told you that you can live with us?"
Niko nodded. "Yes. Is that alright? I have no where else to live." She was practically begging with her eyes. Even though she was putting on a brave face, she was scared on the inside.
Rabbit was also scared. One time another cat asked to live with them. Scarlet had turned them down. And Rabbit liked Niko. But Scarlet might turn her down too!
"Um, well... can you hunt?" Asked Scarlet. She needed to know if she could provide for her family.
Niko nodded eagerly. "Yes. Want to see?" Scarlet nodded.
Niko angled her ears to catch any sound. Suddenly in about two seconds, she stir off with a scent and a sound that no other cat could catch.
Niko came back with a squirrel. It was plump and big. She sat it down near their feet.
The cats were appalled. They didn't hear, see, or taste anything.
"H-how?" Scarlet asked, still shocked.
"Oh that? Years of practice. All alone you pick up a few tricks." She shrugged it off like it was nothing. But in her eyes, she was very proud.
"Well, I say... yes, you can join us." Scarlet meowed. Niko nodded and turned around. Rabbit saw her smile happily. Rabbit almost laughed.
"Can we go home? I'm hungry!" Sky ended the silence with her funny words. Every cat laughed as they headed home.
