LETTER'S OF THE UNKNOWN

╚══════ ≪ °❈° ≫ ══════╝

As they were locked in and more importantly, exhausted from an over active night, Selene decided to spend the night at Darcy's as she dozed off at Darcy's bed after nudging Darcy for countless times to sleep at her own bed but she wouldn't just budge from the sofa.

Next morning when Selene woke up, she couldn't find Darcy in the house, meaning she had gone to school early and that was by no means a good thing.

Sadly, when Selene tried to sneak out from Darcy's house without having to face her best friend's mom's wrath, unfortunately she got caught.

"Selene? What are you doing here?" Mrs. Emerson asked as her brows scrunched at Selene's clothes which were all crinkled.

"Uh good morning, Mrs Emerson! I worked over time last night and was too tired to go home. So Darcy let me crash here." Selene lied without hesitation, knowing if the mother knew that her daughter was wasted last night and she had to bring her home, then it wouldn't bring any good to her nor her daughter.

"Where's Darcy? I didn't saw her coming home last night." Mrs Emerson asked curiosly, not putting a lot of pressure on her question. She knew her daughter's nature all too well as every mother.

"She must have gone to school early. I think I should leave too." Selene hurriedly spoke as she left the house which was no more locked and made a quick run to her house which was nearly a ten minutes walk.

She sneaked in her room through her window so that her uncle didn't get a wind of she stayed out for the rest of the night. Not agreeing on her job was enough tantrum for her uncle to throw. She didn't need another one.

Climbing through her window, She quickly freshened herself after quietly getting in the room and changed her clothes as she tiptoed through the living room and left her house, walking the rest of the way to her school.

After reaching Verlaten Falls high, she walked down the hallway of the first floor as she looked around her surroundings, searching for a certain brunette. Her blonde locks fell behind her back in a messy way she rounded up at corner, opening her locker in process.

Selene rummaged through the books in her locker boredly. As she was about to slam it shut, Darcy appeared beside her like a ghost out of nowhere which caused Selene to jump in surprise.

Selene calmed herself down in a second as she asked immediately, narrowing her eyes at her companion,"Where the heck were you in the morning?"

"Seriously Selene, you need to learn how to live without me." Darcy mockingly blew out a breath as she leaned on the locker next to Selene's who scoffed at her words.

"Yeah sure. Only it's the other way around. If I were not there last night, you would've been dead, Emerson. I repeat dead." Selene dramatically stated as she shut her locker with a small thud.

As she turned around, she found most of the students who were swarming along in the hallway, were staring at a particular person.

Selene's eyes followed their suit as she came into view of Ian Moore, Darcy's ex boyfriend with....

A broken nose

She immediately looked at her best friend with a knowing look as she spoke,"Care to explain?"

"He crossed my path and ended up with a broken nose. Not my fault." Darcy put her hands up as in a surrender move with a roll of eyes but Selene knew all too well what exactly happened.

Darcy merely glanced at him cause even looking at him was bringing back the memories she didn't wanna remember.

"Watch where you're throwing balls, you blind jerk."

"Glad it hit you, you stupid girl."

Ian and Darcy were no more than two classmates who couldn't stand each other's nerves. She couldn't even tolerate having him in her worst nightmares in that time.

But at a certain part of her life, everything between them changed and it led to a relationship which caused her a heartbreak which she promised to avoid in her early life but it was inevitable.

That incident and the little change in both of them changed the ways they felt about each other and to be honest, Darcy didn't think she would ever feel the same around any guy that she felt around Ian.

Darcy looked away for a scarce second but snapped her face forward again cause she didn't wanna come off as weak.

Selene noticed the sudden change to emotion in her best friend so didn't pressure her much. She just shook her head in disappointment as she again opened her mouth,"A black eye would've suited him, I think."

"No. He's not worth that much." Darcy shortly replied, clenching her jaw. Ian noticed the familiar blonde and brunette as he shot a glare towards them and both of the girls returned the cruel generosity with deep compassion nonetheless.

Selene and Darcy's brows knotted together in confusion as the aforementioned guy started to approach them as if he had a very painful death wish.

He was almost close but right then, Adira stepped in the scenario beside him, facing his side.

He looked at the red head and if it was not a mistake of the eye, Selene saw his pupil's colour change to pure black from the short distance that laid between them.

Selene angled her neck to see properly as Adira also seem to notice the sudden change of the eye, even she was staring at his eyes intently.

Selene was not sure if Darcy also saw the little detail, seeing that she was busy glaring at the two human beings in front of her. Selene nudged her and that seemed to fall into Ian's attention more than Darcy's.

He moved his head to a side with a jerk and when he again glanced at the girls around him, his pupils were back to it's previous colour.

"Freaks." He muttered lowly as he quickly walked away before any of them could tell him off.

"Why everything around you is confusing, new girl?" Darcy spat on Adira as her face showed clear foul mood.

Adira looked in her way, calmly saying,"I have a name, Darcy."

"Well deal with it. Cause you're the one who introduced yourself as the new girl." Darcy stated, crossing her hands in front of her chest.

"Leave it, Darcy. Anything you need, Adira?" Selene tiredly asked as she tightened her grip around her books, pressed to her chest.

"I wanted to confirm something. Selene, your surname is Silvester and Darcy, yours is Emerson, isn't it?" Adira asked intently as she tucked a hair strand behind her ear.

"Why do you need to confirm that?" Selene asked as her forehead creased in confusion.

"Just tell me." Adira insisted which felt pretty creepy to the other two.

"Yeah." Selene hesitatingly spoke. Darcy was about to open her mouth to tell her to stop being creepy and confusing but Adira cut her off.

"I have something to tell you two. Since Lloyd saw that you two were with me last night, I suggest you not to tell your name to any person whom you don't know. You could be in danger for that." Adira warned as she squinted off before anyone could question her about the mysterious acquaintance of her.

"Are we living in a criminal thriller movie?" Darcy asked, arching her brows as she stared at the crimson silhouette which vanished along with the students in the hallway.

Selene just shook her head in response as Darcy spoke again,"Then why is she acting like somebody's gonna kidnap us and torture us to death?"

"Dunno. But I'm pretty much agreed with the kidnapping idea if the kidnapper is one of my fictional boyfriends." Selene bit her lips as she shook the questions clouding her mind and walked with Darcy towards their classroom.

After school, Selene wasted no time before getting back to her house. She unlocked the main door with her own key as she carefully opened the door, making absolutely no sound like a black cat moving in the dark with her tail unwillingly moving.

She almost made it to the stairs but a sound of clearing throat stopped her in her tracks. She gulped nervously as she turned around, fully facing her wrath aka Uncle Silas. She gave him a straightened smile as she greeted him.

"Hello there,"Selene again gulped, seeing that his stern posture didn't change for a nano second before finishing her sentence,"uncle."

Selene wasn't particularly afraid of her uncle rather the opposite. Cause He was the only guardian she had and she was the only responsibility he had.

He wasn't all strict and sour but he managed to keep Selene out of troubles for the last six months. Everytime she snuck out without permission, she ended up with doing the laundry for a whole month and for Selene, that was worse than nightmare.

He was even against Selene, working at the local grill but was Selene stubborn. She knew her uncle didn't earn much, seeing that he just finished college two years ago and she wanted to help her uncle out.

"Where were you last night?" Uncle Silas asked in a calm silky voice as Selene debated on truth vs lie.

But she knew better than lying cause she might be an professional liar in front of the whole world but in front of her family members, she was an open book.

"Darcy had a breakup and she needed some consoling." Selene slowly said, mentally praying that Darcy never gets the wind of what she just said or her head would be rolling in the street, not attached to her neck.

"You could've called me at least." Uncle Silas warily said as Selene took a closer look at her uncle. He looked tired and more wore down than the last previous days.

"Are you working overtime, Silas?" Selene asked, concern lacing her question as she followed her uncle's trail towards kitchen.

"Kind of." He shrugged lightly as he continued,"Listen Selene, you are a growing girl and last night, something could've happened. Don't you ever go anywhere without my permission again." He warned her but it was not as strong as it should be.

"Is something bothering you?" Selene asked, fetching plates from the cabinet for a early dinner before she had to go for her night shift at the grill.

"Yes. The lack of coffee in our kitchen. Selene, I told you to keep you caffeine addiction in control!" Uncle Silas exclaimed frustratingly, unable to control his sweet little niece's abnormal routine of seeping coffee every time she felt alone.

Selene just smiled sheepishly as Silas let out a sigh, putting food on the plates. "Do you need any new books at your birthday?" Silas asked, knowing Selene was a die hard bookworm and he had been giving her books since she learnt to read.

Selene noticed something was off with her uncle cause it was only two days ago that she told him that she didn't need any books this time and as she knew, her uncle had a very good memory.

Then she realized that he had been in this way since he moved here and was burdened with her responsibility after her father's death.

"No." Selene shortly replied as pain started to invade her mind and soul but she just pushed it off to a side.

"So what's up?" Uncle Silas asked, his mouth full of bread but still decided to speak since he couldn't help not knowing his niece's private life.

Kidding, it was an usual routine between both of them so that they didn't end up with a distanced relationship. "Nothing actually. There's a new girl in our school." Selene spoke.

"Is she good?" Silas asked absent mindedly as he finally sat down to eat dinner properly with Selene on the other side.

"Ian kissed her on a dare. What do you think?" Selene pulled her fork out of her mouth as she said. Silas was pretty friendly with Darcy so she guessed Darcy wouldn't mind.

"Did she continue it?" Silas shortly asked, merely glancing at his niece one or two times and thinking how things would change in a few weeks.

"She slapped him afterwards."

"Not her fault then."

"Still Darcy hates her."

"She'll move on soon. It's Darcy Emerson we are talking about. She doesn't hold onto something which is not worth it." Silas said as Selene just hummed in response, making them look like inter family gossipers.

"Last night, when I met Adira, the new girl, for the first time, we met a guy too. Today she said, since the guy from last night saw us with her, we could be in danger. I mean how creepy is that?" Selene faintly chuckled as she played with her fork but soon she noticed the serious expression on her uncle's face.

"Danger? What kind of danger?" Selene almost wanted slap herself in front of him as he asked, for letting out too much information.

"It's probably nothing. She looks like she knows something precious, something we don't know. but it might be just the way she looks." Selene shrugged lightly as she again stuffed food in her mouth.

"What's her surname?" Silas asked intently.

"What's with you people asking surnames?" Selene's forehead creased as she continued,"Owen, maybe."

Silas's expression changed for a scarce second but he masked it with a normal one before Selene could notice the slight recognition in his face.

The conversation went on as usual as both of them finished their plates of food.

After dinner, She went to her room and took a long shower, getting ready for the shift at the grill.

When Selene came out from the bathroom, it was evident from the shadows that the sun was gonna be down in a matter of seconds. She rubbed her hair as she sat on her bed, replaying today's class in her head and studies she needed to do tonight.

While drying her hair, she heard a crash in her bedroom as her face jerked behind just to see her window broken.

The glasses were shattered in pieces as she stood up from the bed, putting her towel down on her bed. She stepped forward towards the glasses, carefully dodging them and started to find the thing that broke her window.

Someone must have thrown a rock or something solid at her window for her window to break which she gathered from the sound of the crash.

Few last sunset rays fell in her bedroom through the broken window as she caught a glimpse of a rock.

She approached towards it and bent down to pick it up carefully. She turned it around to find a scrap of paper bound to it. She untied the paper and turned it around, a neat handwriting written upon the paper.

"At 17, we meet."

"Really?" Selene's arrogant self unknowingly spoke as she looked around in confusion that what could message possibly mean. Probably just some sophomores playing pranks on her.

Selene's forehead creased as she looked at the door, half expecting a panting Silas at her door, half yelling and half asking what just happened but there was no one.

Selene again dodged the broken pieces of glass and came out from her room, looking for her uncle. She climbed down the stairs as she looked around cautiously, the house half lit because of the faint sun rays peeking through the half closed curtains.

Shadow merged over the whole house as she called out,"Uncle Silas!"

But no answer came. She hurriedly went to his room but just to find it empty. She searched the whole house, believing that he could be in here somewhere cause nobody could vanish away in a matter of half an hour cause Selene would take at least one hour to pack the bags.

But not her uncle. By the time, Selene finished searching the while house, she came to a conclusion that her uncle was not home and he left without notice which he never did before.

"Hide and seek ain't cool, uncle." Selene grudgingly muttered as she put her hands on her hips, realizing that she was left alone in this house again.

As soon as Adira reached her home after school, she checked if her father was at home or not. Ensuring that no one was in the house, Adira went to the garage and walked inside it, reaching a wall which was covered by dark curtains which people usually overlooked.

She carefully slid the curtain as a locked door revealed itself. She cautiously opened the first door as she looked around to notice if anyone was in this particular room.

Besides her father and her, no one was allowed in this room and she had to come here while her father was with her cause it only opened with her father's fingerprints.

And somehow, she got her sleaky hands on them. It was kind of difficult, knowing her father was not a man to be outwitted but being the daughter of a clever man, some benefits are bound to come.

Pressing the fingerprints carefully on the password dictator, the second door clicked open, revealing a enormous library with a huge table in the middle of the room.

She again took the image of the room inside her mind. It was rather clean except for the occasional wooden dust at the corners of the room.

Quickly remembering for what she came here for, She scurried to the corner of the room where a scarp of old paper was bind in a wooden frame as she held it up by her hand.

Anyone could tell by it's posture that it was a very valuable piece of paper and held unknowing histories in it.

Her eyes feebly searched through the cursive signs of names as she noticed the paper was slightly torn at the upper left corner. Her eyes lit in recognition but then again showed doubt in it cause four letters of a surname could mean nothing...

Or everything.
