Iwakāluakūmālua

We've been scouting these outskirts for a while and still nothing has shown itself, Tanyu mused, looking around at the quiet grassy territory that was just outside of Iki Town.

"There has to be something useful out-" He cut himself off, his eyes shifting to a fruit tree along the route, "here..."

He could see a yellow tail poking out from behind the tree. Canting his head, he analyzed the tail further, trying to deduce what was hiding behind the tree. From what he could see, it was sitting cross-legged. Curious, Tanyu began to walk toward the tree, circling it until he could get a good look at whatever it was he was seeing. What he spotted, surprised him.

There, sitting under the tree, was what appeared to be an Abra. The body shape was essentially the same, but there was fighting tape wrapped around his fists and feet. His fur coloration was a dull grayish brown while what looked to be his armor, was a reddish clay color.

That's unlike any Abra I've ever seen. Those are martial arts wraps on its fists and feet. That can only mean one thing, Tanyu thought with a smirk, reaching for Rowlet's ball. It's mine!

Iwakāluakūmālua

Standing at the docks of Hao'oli City, Tanyu, Hau and Lillie were waiting for Kukui to arrive. Hau munched on one of the malasadas he'd picked up from a store while Lillie looked out to sea towards the other islands in view.

"Howzit!" Came Kukui's voice, making the others turn their attention towards him.

"Alola, Professor," Lillie replied, wrestling a little with the bag as she turned to greet him. "You're half an hour late," she frowned.

"It's all good Lillie. We'll get there Alolan time," Kukui grinned.

"Alolan time?" Tanyu asked, getting a laugh from Hau.

"It means we'll get there when we get there. You feel me cuz?" Kukui laughed. "Ainokea about the time cuz. Just relax, have fun. That's what your journey's for."

"No wonder mom didn't wake up earlier," Tanyu mumbled under his breath.

"Aloooola!"

"Teacher Emily! Howzit!" Hau exclaimed.

"Good morning Hau," Emily replied. "Howzit?"

"I'm all good! I'm excited," Hau said with a broad smile.

"I bet you are! Congrats on completing your trial," Emily said enthusiastically.

"Thanks!" Hau beamed.

"Emily..." Tanyu began, trekking towards her in a determined fashion, his eyes locking onto hers in a challenging manner. "Battle me again..." Tanyu demanded, reaching for a ball on his belt and priming it.

"What!? A battle right now? Seriously Tanyu?" Lillie exclaimed. "We're about to-"

"Sure," Emily smirked, reaching for a sphere on her belt and expanding it to show she'd accepted. "How bout a one on one? I need to get back to class soon so I don't have time for a full battle. Is that okay?" Emily suggested.

Tanyu nodded in agreement and stepped back away from her a few paces, putting space between them.

"Che! I like your style Tanyu," Kukui beamed, stepping between the two in order to be a ref.

"Shall we get started?" Emily inquired, hefting her first partner's ball into the air.

"After you," He replied, gesturing for her to send out her teammate first.

"If you insist! Magneton, time for battle!" Emily shouted, releasing her magnetic companion onto the battlefield.

"Abra, stand by!" Tanyu commanded, firing Abra's ball into the fray.

Abra immerged onto the concrete in a crosslegged position, his eyes closed as if he were meditating.

"An Abra huh? You must've gone through a lot of trouble to get your hands on one of those," Emily stated, placing a hand on her hip.

"More or less," Tanyu replied, remembering how difficult it was to capture his Abra. He certainly put up quite a fight...

Kukui looked between the two and raised his hand. "Begin!" He called out, swiping his hand downward to signal the start of the match.

"Magneton, use Magnet Bomb!" Emily commanded.

"Vacuum Wave!" Tanyu ordered.

Magneton powered up its magnets and released a shotgun style blast Magnet Bomb attack that rained down upon the still, meditating Abra. As the attack closed in, Abra looked up from his position and swept the air with a knife hand strike, sending a harsh blast of air towards the shower of bombs, carving through the majority of them while the others exploded around him, leaving him unharmed.

"Thunderbolt!" Emily called out.

"Force Palm!" Tanyu commanded fiercely.

A blast of lightning tore through the air towards Abra who remained unmoved until it reached him. In a blurred motion, Abra suddenly vanished, only to reappear directly in front of Magneton, his palm aglow with a white light. Abra's open palm cannoned into Magneton with brute force, forcing the magnetic collage to crash into the ground from the power of the impact.

Magneton rose back up, its magnets spinning before launching a Flash Cannon towards Abra, pushing him across the battlefield, smearing him along the asphalt. Abra struggled as he pulled himself up. While he'd managed to do some damage, the opposition was clearly superior in this case. Managing to gather himself up and sit back down, Abra focused his attention back on the fight at hand. Dozens of attack patterns ran through his mind, several of which had a bad outcome while a few would yield positive results. He only hoped his new trainer would make the right decision.

"Flash Cannon again!" Emily commanded.

"Drain Punch!" Tanyu shouted.

Magneton fired a silver beam of concentrated steel energy towards Abra who deftly avoided the blast with a swift teleportation, reappearing before Magneton, quick as a flash. With a swift strike, Abra hammered into Magneton, draining the stamina from the steel nuisance.

Abra felt energy flooding back into his frame after his previous attack. With renewed vigor, he resumed his meditative posture and focused. Taking another direct hit like that would be very costly. He couldn't afford to be caught off guard again.

Tanyu has definitely improved since we first met. It's hard to believe that in such a short time he could make this much of a change. Then again, anything is possible if people put in the effort. That Abra must be freshly caught. Magneton hasn't taken as much damage as it should from the previous attacks, Emily thought as she observed her floating companion.

Still, he's fast. And that's a problem that I need to fix.

"Magneton, use Lock-On and Magnet Bomb!" Emily commanded.

"Don't give it time!" Tanyu ordered.

Magneton turned towards Abra, its magnets shifting to point towards him in attempts to put him in its cross-hairs. Before it could do anything, Abra vanished from his position, quick as a flash. Within seconds, Abra was in front of Magneton, fist aglow with a bright white light. Abra swung hard and slammed his fist into the conjoined magnet trio, batting them away a considerable distance.

Curse you and your teleport! Emily frowned, biting her thumbnail as she thought of a way out of the current situation.

He's too fast to use Lock-On. I need a way to slow him down. Emily mused, her eyes focusing on Tanyu for a moment. Tanyu won't let me get any distance attacks off with that combo of his. So why don't I just lure him in?

"Sonic Boom!" Emily called out.

"Force Palm!" Tanyu countered.

Magneton spun its magnets, whipping up a storm of energy before releasing it in a sharp blast of air, towards Abra. Moving quickly, Abra avoided the sonic attacks by a narrow margin, materializing before Magneton to deliver a swift palm strike to the floating metallic menace.

"Thunder Wave!" Emily countered.

A bolt of electricity shot out of the magnet tips and stunned Abra in mid strike. Wasting no time, Magneton released a beam of electric energy that sent Abra sprawling back along the ground.

"Looks like this is it for Abra," Emily pointed out. "Lock-On and use Zap Cannon!"

Magneton pointed its magnets towards Abra, locking onto its target as it charged massive amounts of electricity into the tips of each magnet. Small spheres of electrical energy forged together to become a large, crackling ball of electrical energy. Magneton fired.

Come on, move! Tanyu thought as the ball of energy rocketed towards Abra.

Abra, although he wasn't able to move as fast, didn't need to do much to avoid the assault. Relying on his telekinetic abilities, Abra teleported just as the ball neared. Abra reappeared a good distance away, however...like a heat-seeking missile, the orb followed him.

Well this sucks, Tanyu thought as he watched Abra teleport continuously, just barely avoiding the sphere each time. I can't have Abra stop for even a second or he'll be fried, Tanyu gritted his teeth and looked over at Magneton who seemed to be directing the blast with its magnets. Kamikaze it is then...

"Abra, Teleport to Magneton!" Tanyu commanded.

Abra teleported away from the ball again, narrowly avoiding it before porting away again, this time right in front of Magneton.

What is he...oh no! Emily exclaimed mentally as she realized what Satoru had in mind.

The electrical sphere of energy shot back towards Abra and Magneton at an accelerated rate. Just as it was about to connect, Abra teleported away. A loud boom echoed through the peer followed by a dust cloud that covered the area. When it settled, Magneton was seen on the ground, out cold.

"Magneton is unable to battle! Abra wins the match which means the victory goes to Tanyu!" Kukui exclaimed.

Emily smiled faintly and let out a sigh of relief. She returned her Magneton and placed it on her belt.

"That was one hell of a strategy Tanyu. I thought I had you for sure," Emily laughed.

Tanyu returned Abra and looked over at Emily. It had been a tougher challenge than he'd expected. Even with a Fighting-type, her Magneton still took a lot of hits and kept coming back for more. If it took him that long to take out her Magneton, he didn't want to think of what else she had on that belt of hers.

"Thank you for the battle. I learned a lot from it," Tanyu replied.

Hau walked up beside Tanyu and clapped him on the shoulder.

"That was awesome! Way to go cuz, that gave me chicken skin!" Hau beamed. "What did you think Lillie?" Hau asked the blonde.

"It was...umm...scary. Tanyu, are you always that reckless with your strategies?" Lillie asked with a worried expression.

"I do what is necessary. In situations like that, risks are always involved," Tanyu stated. "If you don't know that, being a trainer isn't the path for you..."

"But I don't--"

"I think it's about time we set sail! It'll take us a while to get to Akala Island from here. But it's all good ohana. No rush," Kukui grinned.

"Ohana?" Tanyu blinked, looking between Lillie and Hau for clarification.

"It means family cuz. Everyone on these islands is family," Kukui beamed.

"You mean you're all related?" Tanyu asked aloud.

"No cuz, he means "like family." Kinda like when we say "cousin" or "uncle." You're not really our cousin or uncle, but it's a sign of respect to elders and everyone else!"

"I see...I'll keep that in mind," Tanyu replied.

"Come on guys, let's set sail, yeah!"

There you have it! The Melemele Island portion of the book is complete! Onward to Akala Island! Now, for those of you wondering about the Alolan Abra, I simply couldn't resist. The fan art for the Alolan Alakazam was freaking amazing, so I thought, why not have the entire Alolan line? I am going to switch a few things up with the design of the Alolan Alakazam though. Who knows, there may be more forms added real soon. I already have one in mind for one of my favorites. Anyway, I hope you all are enjoying this story so far!

Ciao!
