Chapter Seven
I reached my room. At that time it was dark. Dust was hovering around and I could only see it with the help of the moonlight. The moon tonight was huge. Glowing with radiance and shedding its light everywhere. This is what they called back in my era as Supermoon.
The window was wide open. A gentle breeze was blowing on my hair. The wind blew and passed through my ears as if the moon came close to whisper secrets of this mysterious world to the ears of a mere human. I was in a daze by the sight and sound of this night.
I sat in a chair close to the window and kept observing the majestic moon. Suddenly rose petals flew in the air and through the window as the whispers got stronger. It was like it snowed red petals. An amazing sight to whitness.
A sudden knock on the wooden door got me back to my senses. I opened the door slowly and saw a man. Someone with grey eyes and black hair. His face had aged gracefully. He looked respectful. He was dressed in a navy blue suit with silver embroidery and chain details. He had a polished appearance.
Who was he?
He seemed important.
" Hello sir? May I help you?"
" Silvia... You are awake."
"Yes... But... Who are you?"
"You don't remember?"
"People have been asking the same question all day. Should I know you?"
" I guess this is better...(mumbling)"
"What did you say sir?"
"Nothing! I am your adoptive father. Asher Herion Grey. "
" I see... Well... How can I help you?"
"I just came to congratulate you. For the tournament."
" Thank you sir!... Then good night!"
" Good night..."
My adoptive father left and I felt sadness coming from him. He seemed to regret something. I cannot pinpoint exactly what it is but I can't judge whether his feelings were real yet. I still don't know much about me.
I don't know my age or my past. I just know my name and the fact that I have an adoptive father and a pair of brothers. Nothing more, nothing less. Tomorrow is the final round of the tournament.
I need to win.
I have to get a stable job and provide myself food easily. The animals in the forest can't die just because I am hungry.
I need to get stronger in order to find my memories and fill the unending emptiness that fills my heart.
I went closer to the window. The moon was still there. Unchanged and unwavering from any wind or rainfall. Still shining brighter than the stars. Even if all the stars in the sky competed one by one to overshadow the moon, the moon would still beat them.
As I kept admiring the view of the moon, I felt refreshed. I snapped out of it and went to bed. I had to rest and regain my power after such an eventful day.
I had a dream. A dream about a lady who loved flowers. She had long wavy Auburn hair that flowed like silky rivers down to her back.
Combed carefully and highlighted by the sunrays. She had a pair of familiar green eyes that shone like emeralds. Eyes that had the sharp shape of almonds but looked kind and gentle.
Skin that contrasted with her pink plump lips. The colour of white lilies. A gentle smile like the gentle breeze that kept giving movement to small strands of her long silky hair. She wore a beautiful dress. White like a nightgown but silky.
A silk that was blessed with hints of the colours of the rainbow. She held a white rose with her thin white hand that was embellished with blue vains creating mysterious paths on her almost transparent skin.
A woman resembling a fairy. An angel without wings. She looked at me with her gentle gaze and her smile widened. I felt my heart skip a beat.
This woman was the epitome of perfection. She spoke a phrase to me.
" Please take care of them ".
Her voice was as gentle as her appearance. She looked very familiar.
Who is the one I should take care of?
By the time I was about to ask her, she waved at me. I woke up.
I prepared for the tournament. I wore my clothes and prepared my sword. I tied my hair on a ponytail. I wore my boots and went outside. I trained for about an hour in the forest and then went to the arena.
When I entered, everyone was hostile towards me. I managed to not lose a battle and catch the attention of the emperor. A woman carrying a sword like that was considered as unbehaving and unconventional.
If I had to throw away my womanhood to earn my life, I would gladly give it up.
Their gazes followed my every move. They awaited for the time I embarass myself and become a laughingstock. The finals begun by the announcement of the person from yesterday.
The nobles stayed seated and the emperor awaited for the last round. The one that could determine the best swordmaster.
The announcer asked for the two finalists to enter the arena. Me and a man. He looked serious but he seemed to look down on me. A man with a nice appearance but not handsome enough like the two men I met before. He looked plain.
The battle began and he took out his sword. I slid mine from its case and got into position. My opponent attacked first. He was quick and strong. His skills were polished through immense hardships, like how a diamond forms in pressure.
He needed this title just like me but I can't nullify my efforts just because I pity him.
I did my best. I dodged every hit and used every opportunity to make a move. I attacked every opening and finally defeated him. Everyone in the audience was surprised that I, a woman, was able to wield this sword and defeat the man who was said to be a talent.
The king raised both his eyebrows in surprise and grinned with satisfaction. The emperor stood up from his throne and extended his arm. With a deep hoarse voice and in a satisfied manner he said
" come closer child ".
I walked towards the emperor and knelt down in front of him. As I lowered my head I greeted him politely.
"Raise your head young lady. Let me congratulate you."
" I am honoured your majesty."
" This is the first time a woman wins this tournament. Let alone wield a longsword. How did you achieve such a feat?"
" Your majesty, thank you for your praises but please allow me to be blunt and state my opinion based on your question."
"You are allowed."
"I have practiced a lot and I did exactly the same exercises and even harder ones than the male guards. I managed to wield my sword just like how men do everyday. I just did not give up. I do not believe that interests, abilities or knowledge should be divided into genders.
When I was competing I noticed many different reactions to my swordmanship from the audience. Everyone kept criticising, mocking or underestimate me because I am a female. There was nobody who looked at my sword.
I find such behaviour disturbing since my sex has nothing to do with my capabilities. To summarize, I find your majesy's question a bit insulting."
"Aaah!... I apologize for my mistake. You seem like a reasonable person with wisdom and knowledge aside from your abilities... What is the name of such an amazing person?"
" I am named as Silvia Grey your majesty."
"So you are from a noble family. You are the adoptive daughter of Duke Grey then."
" Indeed."
" How should I reward you for your feat young lady?"
"To tell the truth your majesty, the opportunity to showcase my skills was the best reward to me. However I will accept any reward your majesty offers."
" Then what is the thing you wish the most lady Silvia?"
" I desire freedom. I feel that I am now part of a family that I don't fit in. Although I don't remember much from my past, I do not feel comfortable in a place where people are not even eager to share their food with me. Even the clothes I am wearing are made by me.
I hunt to eat everyday in the forest. So if I were to ask for anything, it would be to break free from these chains. If your majesty can grant me this favour, I will protect you and your family for life."
" Then your wish is my command. I bestow to Silvia Grey the title of Duchess Fury and two mansions in the capital and the Fury city. I also grant her the status of SWORDLORD and give her the choice to become a war general. Lady Fury do you accept?"
"I accept your rewards wholeheartedly your majesty and I will gladly aid our country to the war."
