Chapter One
Dear diary,
Today was a new beginning. I finally got away from that awful place. A rich family adopted me to take the place of their deseased daughter Silvia.
At first I thought that I escaped the struggles that come from being lowborn when I stepped out of the decorated carriage.
It turned out to be far more torturous. This family seems to abhor the idea of me being their daughter. At times like these I always miss my mother. She truly was the only person to care for me.
When she left, a part of me died too. My dear diary, you are the only one who truly knows me. I wish you were there today when they claimed that I was the thief of Silvia's belongings.
How could I even dream of something that I don't know the value of? These people are bad.

...
The night was chilly and the moon was full as I sobbed quietly. I couldn't sleep. My sadness kept me awake. I sat by the window and gazed at the full moon that sparkled brilliantly up in the dark sky.
As hours passed by this moon that accompanied me, dived into the horizon and the once dark sky was painted with amazing colours.
The sun rose in the sky and a bad feeling flooded me. I closed the diary and locked it in a drawer and hid the key behind the desk.
It was now morning and I knew that this new day would be even worse. I had a bad feeling that they will not leave me alone.
Jace and Toren clearly showed their hatred towards me. When I left the dining room Toren looked so satisfied.
I stood in front of the mirror believing that I would look haggard because of not sleeping. Instead I looked refreshed. My cheeks had a faint blush colour and my eyes were shiny.
Suddenly my stomach started growling and I felt that the emptiness inside me meant hunger.
So, I didn't change to the fancy clothes that were actually meant for Silvia Grey and I went downstairs to the dining room.
The huge doors opened and I saw my so called family while eating their breakfast so cheerfully.
By the time I entered their smiles froze. The duke had a stoic expression while the two boys kept monitoring my every move.
At first I froze too in the sight of the happy family breakfast that I could only observe at the commercials played on the TV.
Then, I got back to reality and I pinched the corners of my ragged dress slightly lifting them as I bowed.
To top my greetings up I said with a calm and aloof manner
" Greetings to your grace and the two young masters ".
As I raised my gaze I could definitely see their eyes still monitoring me full of curiosity.
Without another word I quietly sat on the chair furthest to them and asked the maid politely to serve me breakfast.
The maid narrowed her eyes giving of a vicious stare back at me.
Then, after a few minutes, she came with a worn out plate with uneven slices of bread and a pair of toy fork and knife that undoubtedly couldn't even cut butter.
Then she took a bottle of milk and started pouring it to the cup. Suddenly I felt my legs burning as she poured the hot liquid over me.
I felt unbearable pain as the dirty and ragged fabric stuck on my burnt skin.
I let out a scream while the others stood there watching my struggle as if it was a football match. Toren let out a chuckle.
What made me angrier was the fact that the one who brought me here, the one who wanted me to be his daughter and smiled to me so happily... That very person stood there and did nothing!
Anger conquered me and I stood up while my scalded legs bled and the blood stained the marble floor.
The pair of brothers didn't even hide their smiles. I had enough!
The maid took away the bread and was ready to leave so I took the toy knife and with all the anger I had gathered and all the strength I had, I stabbed her hand and the maid let out an agonizing groan.
The duke surprised he stood up and pointed the door with his finger. Then, with a groaning voice he shouted
" Guards! "
and two knights barged in and took me away by force as if they knew about me stabbing the maid.
As the two knights lifted my small body up, I could see the blood coming from my wounds creating a path on the blue carpet that decorated the hallway.
Those knights seemed to ignore the fact that the small child they were holding was bleeding too much. I felt cold sweat covering my skin and my eyes closing.
Everything is dark again. At this point, I hope for my death to be near. It was yet again cold and sweet. Just like ice cream.
When you are on this state of mind, you are so calm. Everything is distant. Voices, feelings, emotions, images are all blocked by a dark hug of silence.
Skinship with darkness itself. A loving hug protecting a damaged soul from all disturbing facts and thoughts. The kind that makes you lose track of time. Even if days pass, you are still addicted to this hug.
When I woke up, it was nighttime. The proud and delicate moon was governing the dark sky and the stars tried to snatch this glory with their lights.
I tried to get out of bed. A stinging sensation made me hesitate. I lifted my dress carefully and I pulled the part of the dress that had stuck in my wounds like a waxing tape.
I felt the pain numbing my head and I drowned my scream with the pillow. I saw my two skinny legs being disfigured badly and I got out of bed.
I went to the window and left my tears, that I kept hidden so long, run. I faced the moon. Only the moon up in the sky could see my suffering.
Even so, I still long for a family. Even if they hate me to the core, I still want a family.
I took a rag and tied my wounded legs. Then I went back to bed and noticed the bloodied sheets from my legs. Then I took a chair and placed it close to the window.
I sat on the uncomfortable chair and kept staring at the moon. While it kept shimmering in the sky like a beautiful jewel, I kept asking myself what I had done wrong to be treated as such.
It was midnight and the room was quiet enough for me to hear only my heartbeat and my lingering questions.
I heard a step behind me and pretended to sleep on the chair. The person behind kept approaching me with slow and steady steps.
I felt a chill run down my spine as the person placed his warm hands on my neck.
Out of reflex I grabbed the wrist of the person behind me and turned my head to meet his gaze. All I could distinguish about the one who was about to choke me was a familiar pair of ashen grey eyes that looked back at me coldly yet they widened when he saw that I was not afraid of him choking me.
That's right. Jace was about to kill me aka Silvia Grey.
He slowly retracted his hands and stayed there frozen. I took the initiative to test whether he was serious about killing me.
" Brother Jace, do you want to choke your sister? "
I said in a playful manner. Jace flinched and got furious. I stood up and walked towards the now bloodthirsty Jace who was very serious about getting rid of me.
Dispite my hurting wounds I felt very powerful. Jace took a step closer to me trying to intimidate me with his height but I didn't surrender to his threatening appearance.
Instead I took a step closer too and with a weird air of confidence I raised my head to meet his wrinkled with anger face.
Jace's eyes widened with fear as he saw into my eyes and noticed my unwavering courage. He suddenly left with quiet and fast steps, escaping my gaze.
I took a look in the mirror again and I noticed my bloodied dress being stained and my eyes having a golden glow on the irises.
I thought it was the moon and the fact that this was my second sleepless night, so I had hallucinations.
I took out my diary from the locked drawer and wrote what had happened to me.
"Dear diary,
Today was a saddening, fearsome but mostly a weird day.
I was wounded by the maid's scheme and my legs were burned with hot milk with acid. I didn't even eat today either. Out of anger I stabbed the maid's hand with a wooden toy knife that could never cut butter, let alone a human hand.
I am still curious about how I was able to do that with my malnourished body. At night, Jace came to my room to choke me to death. I felt his hands on my neck but I wasn't afraid. Instead I frightened him.
When I looked at the mirror I noticed my eyes glowing. I think I have a weird connection to the moon. I have to study that further.
- Kira."
