Judging Guidelines + Criteria
Once the deadline has been reached, the judges who have so graciously volunteered will be messaged the books they are to judge. Judges - PLEASE follow the following criteria:
Spelling: -/5 [are all words spelled correctly? If you're unsure of a spelling word, please look it up - some countries spell some words differently]
Vocabulary: -/5 [is the language far too unnecessarily sophisticated and superfluous? Is the language too basic? Are adult characters speaking like kindergarten children?]
Grammar and Punctuation: -/10 [is the story well-edited? Do they use punctuation marks accurately?]
Sentence Structure and Paragraphing: -/10 [does each character have dialogue in a separate paragraph? Is the paragraphing cohesive, and are the sentences easy to understand?]
Beginning: -/10 [does the story immediately catch your attention? Is the tone, setting, and character established quickly and seamlessly?]
Plot, Conflict + Pacing: -/10 [are there plot-holes? Does the story progress smoothly, and is it compelling to read? Does the protagonist have to deal with something serious enough to make the reader care? Note: it does not have to be serious, but the reader should feel as if it is a serious conflict that needs resolving. And what about the pacing -- is it too forced? Are important things, such as character and mood, brushed aside? Does it drag on?]
Ending: -/10 [it doesn't have to be completely unpredictable, but does it tie everything together nicely? Does it leave you feeling satisfied? Does it leave you feeling a certain way intentionally? How powerful of an ending is it?]
Characterisation: -/10 [do you feel the characters grow as you progress through the story? Are they flawed? Do they make sense within the context of the story?]
Creativity/Originality: -/10 [is the story cliché? Or is it something that you've never even dreamed about before?]
Prose/Writing Quality: -/10 [do they describe things in a purposeful and effective manner? Do they make use of literary devices? Does the writing evoke emotion and feeling?]
Enjoyment: -/10 [how much did you love it?]
TOTAL: -/100
Feedback:
[each judge will be provided to leave some feedback, with a minimum of 75 words. You must say what you liked and what you thought could have been improved.]
I know the criteria is very detailed, but it's also to help keep judging as consistent and fair as possible.
JUDGES:
You WILL get to choose how many books you judge. You can choose to judge 1 story, you can choose to judge 20. You will have 10 days to judge the stories. So, please, PLEASE, submit scores on time.
