FAQs

I've been spying around to read other short story/flash fiction writing contests, and to see what questions are commonly asked (while also remembering some of the ones I was consistently asked in the original awards).

PARTICIPANT FAQs:

Q: Can I judge and participate at the same time?

A: No, unfortunately. Since this isn't separated into genres, all stories will be in a single pool. However, feel free to judge one month and participate in the next month, or vice versa.

Q: I have a short story that perfectly fits the theme! Can I submit it?

A: Well... I'll be pretty darn impressed if that's the case, so I'm going to say yes. Because that's pretty awesome.

Q: How long will these awards being going for?

A: If things go according to plan, we will be running every month until the end of January, 2021.

Q: Your prompt gave me an idea for a story that isn't a short story, but an actual novel! Can I start writing it and submit that?

A: I would prefer it if you wrote a short story with it. However, feel free to write a completely new story based on the theme -- and let me know so I can check it out in my spare time! If you do write a long story for one of the prompts and you are desperate to enter it in these awards, then you must publish three chapters of content and let me know in the form, so I can give the judges a separate criteria to judge your story.

Q: I can't see chapters with the forms! Where do I submit my entry?

A: If you can't see chapters with the forms, it's probably because we are closed for judging. When we are closed for judging, I always take down the forms, so that we don't have people continuing to submit their entries after the deadline.

Q: I see that one of the themes is a quotation. Do I have to use that quotation directly?

A: No. As long as the theme of that quotation is present throughout your story, then you should be good to go.

Q: Is there a word limit?

A: No. It just has to have a beginning, middle, and end. It can be five words, it can be five thousand words. The sky is the limit!

Q: Ten days to write a short story? Isn't that... short?

A: All I can say is: have fun!

JUDGE FAQs:

Q: I want to judge, but there are some things that I refuse to read. Should I bother applying?

A: Definitely! Please do apply, and in your form, specify what you will not read. For example, if you can't read anything about violence or mental illness, let me know in the form. I ALWAYS try to match the stories to judges who are suitable for the genre. If you tell me that you won't judge romance, I promise not to give you romance.

Q: If I am a judge, do I tell the author that I am judging their story? Or do I keep it anonymous?

A: While you are allowed to vote and comment on their story, please refrain from directly telling the author that you are judging their story. We'd prefer anonymity.

Do you have any more questions? Let me know in the comments below, and I should answer them within 48 hours or so. :)
