(Sorry for the lack of updates! I hope you enjoy this chapter, thank you for reading!)
My eyes flutter open. My head pounds. I can feel my whole body shiver as I start to move to sit up.
I don't know where I am.
My eyes glance over the room. The whole room is dark except for a tiny lamp that is on in the corner.
I don't know where I am.
I quickly sit up, too quick, and place my feet on the ground. My vision becomes blurry and the room beings to spin. I wince and move my hands up to my face.
I suddenly can't breathe. I feel like something is sitting on my chest, restricting it from getting any air. My eyes fill with tears, threatening to fall at any moment.
I don't know where I am.
I wipe them away and stand up. Ignoring my body protesting, I run to the door and try to open it. It won't budge.
In the midst of my panic, I don't even look behind me to see a guy coming towards me.
"Hey-"
He grips my arm and tries to turn me around.
I start to struggle and force him to release his grip on me. I bang on the door.
"Please! Please help me!"
His voice is soothing. "There isn't anyone here. I promise."
I continue to bang on the door until I start to hyperventilate. I fall to the ground and start to cry.
I feel a touch on my shoulder, but I don't have any strength to push it away.
When I look up, I'm able to catch a glimpse of his eyes. With the lamp, I can see his eyes are a tired blue. The blue is dull, like it somehow lost its shine. His hair is a soft brown, close to the same shade as the color of the chair in the corner.
He looks like he's seen ghost. I think I look the same.
We stay like this for several seconds, which feel like an eternity, just staring at each other. Neither one of us knows what to say.
He clears his throat. "I'm... I'm so-"
I glare at him, not knowing what to say at first. Suddenly, something boils inside of me and I let my anger get the best of me. "You're what? Sorry? Do you feel sorry for me?" I eye him once more and push his hand away. "Who are you anyway? And where the hell am I?"
He stares at me. I can't tell what emotion is plastered on his face. His eyes lock with mine.
"I'm not allowed to say."
"What?"
"You heard me."
"But, who are you?"
"My name is Cole. That's all I can tell you. It'll all make sense soon."
I try to stand up but my knees feel like they're going to give out. I sit down on the bed. I scoff. "Okay. So, you're just going to take someone, keep them somewhere and what, observe them? Just to tell them that they can't know where they are?"
He doesn't answer me. He looks at the ground. "I'm sorry, it's protocol."
"Is that so?" I say breathlessly. "What do you want from me?"
He eyes me once more. He starts his sentence cautiously, as if he's afraid of my reaction. "You should get some rest. We have to leave here in a few hours."
"I'm not going anywhere until you tell me what's going on."
"And where else would you go?"
I almost laugh. Out of delirium, I don't know. Instead, I just stare at him. I know he's right. I won't let myself admit it though.
I walk back to the bed and crawl into it. Despite my attitude, everything hurts and I'm exhausted. I can feel it. I try to push away any thoughts or emotions I have at the moment and try to let myself rest.
I realize how scary this all is. My community is dead. I don't know where I am. I don't know who the hell is with me right now. But I don't feel scared, which is the scariest part of it all. I feel trapped. And there is nothing I can do about it.
"If you need anything, let me know."
I look over at Cole sitting in the chair. I nod.
Somehow, I let those words set me at ease.
