Chapter 16 - when dreams come true

Wanda woke up from a cold breeze brushing against her face. She could smell a variety of wildflowers and could hear birds chirping from all around her.

Slowly she opened her eyes and was met with endless blue staring back at her. Not a single cloud was covering her view and the sun was shining brightly, warming up her skin.

"Oh good, you are awake.", she heard someone say next to her. With a small shriek she sat up abruptly, looking to her right, where the voice had come from only to see... her mother.

"Matka? (mother)", the brunette said under her breath, her mind still foggy from sleep.

"Hey, miláčik (sweetheart)", the older brunette answered with a smile, sitting up as well.

Without a second thought Wanda launched herself into her mother's arms, pushing them right back into the grass and flowers with Iryna on her back and Wanda on top of her.

"How-... How is this possible?", the younger girl mumbled breathlessly while tears fell down her cheeks.

She didn't want to let go, fearing that if she did, her mother would vanish and never be seen again.

"Remember when I used to talk to your grandmother after she died?", her mother asked, freeing herself from her daughter's bruising grip with a gentle push while reclaiming her sitting position.

Relief flooded the younger girl when the action didn't result in her mother leaving, before she fully registered the question and managed a small nod while sitting back up herself.

"That's exactly what we are doing right now.", the older woman said, pushing back a chestnut curl behind her daughter's ear.

"But...", there was a small pause while Wanda put her thoughts in order. "How did you contact me when you're...", she began asking, unable to finish her question.

She did her best to swallow the lump in her throat and keep her tears at bay. If her time with her mother was limited, she didn't want to spend it looking at her through watery eyes.

"Oh, I didn't do anything. I simply accepted your call, miláčik.", the older sokovian answered smiling, making Wanda's eyes grow wide.

"I contacted you?", she asked in disbelief. "Yes and I am so proud of you.", her mother beamed, taking one of Wanda's hands into her own.

"But I don't know the spell. I don't have any of your spellbooks and I didn't perform a ritual before going to sleep.", the younger brunette rambled in confusion as her mother's face grew more serious.

"You didn't?", she asked for confirmation and the younger sokovian nodded slowly.

With a sigh Iryna gently cupped her daughter's face. "I don't know how much time we have left until the bond breaks, so I need you to listen to what I am about to tell you, miláčik.", the woman requested softly and Wanda nodded, concerned by her mother's sudden seriousness.

"Do you remember our old neighbor? The woman who lived across the hall and always had candy for you and your brother?", Iryna asked, letting her hands fall down into her daughter's lap, grabbing both of her hands into her own.

"Agnes? Yes, I remember her.", Wanda answered, thinking back to the days when Agnes would look after them while their parents were working. She would always have something sweet for them to eat, since the Maximoff family didn't have enough money to buy candy themselves.

After their building had been ripped apart by bombs during the war, Agnes had vanished and the twins had believed they were the only survivors.

"Her real name is Agatha Harkness.", Iryna stated, watching as her daughter's brows furrowed.

"Wait...You're telling me that our sweet neighbor Agnes is Agatha Harkness? THE Agatha Harkness?", Wanda asked in disbelief and her mother nodded.

"The most powerful witch alive? The only witch to ever escape captivity during the Salem witch trials?", Wanda went on, still unable to believe her mother, although she couldn't come up with a single reason to why the older woman would be lying.

"Yes, miláčik, there is only one Agatha Harkness.", Iryna confirmed smiling, amused by the little fangirl moment her daughter seemed to be experiencing.

Wanda took a deep breath, not having expected their conversation to take such a mind-blowing turn.

Suddenly the sky began to darken and the ground all around them flickered like an old tv. Iryna looked around, quickly realizing that their bond was starting to fade away.

"Listen to me, Wanda. Go back to Sokovia and find Agatha, okay? Tell her that I sent you and she will help you with everything that I didn't get to teach you.", the older brunette said quickly, kissing her daughter's forehead before pulling her in for a warm hug.

"I don't want to go, matka. I don't know if I can contact you again.", Wanda choked out as she returned the hug, breathing in her mother's scent that she had missed so much. Roses and just a small hint of honey.

"We will see each other again, miláčik, I promise.", Iryna whispered into her daughter's hair as the world around them began to fade.

"Tell your brother that I love him, okay?", she asked, a tear rolling down her cheek as she wasn't able to control her emotions anymore.

"Only if you tell otecko (dad) the same thing from me.", Wanda whispered back, which made her mother chuckle through her tears.

"I will, miláčik. I love you.", was the last thing Wanda heard before the darkness consumed her.

-

Originally Natasha had planned on getting up at 4am so she could finally get some work done.

With the twins taking up most of her free time since they had taken them in, the Black Widow was behind on lots of paper work. Not that she minded of course, the twins would always come first for her but it meant waking up at four in the morning to write reports and study files.

Although the russian was used to getting by with only a few hours of sleep, she was desperate to get some coffee into her system before getting started on the boring part of her job.

On her way towards the kitchen the redhead stopped dead in her tracks as she noticed a red glow through the gap underneath Wanda's door.

With her coffee and work long forgotten, the spy entered the room, expecting the younger girl to trash around in her sleep due to another nightmare.

Ever since the twins had agreed on sleeping separately in their own rooms, both of them had struggled with nightmares. They never really wanted to talk about them to anyone except each other but it didn't take a genius to figure out that their nightmares were most likely inspired by their time at Hydra.

What the russian did not expect was finding Wanda in a peaceful sleep, surrounded by her red powers and a few feet up in the air above her bed.

"What the hell...", the spy muttered to herself in shock, not knowing how to handle this situation. Wanda had never done something like this before.

Before she had the chance to fully understand the situation, she felt a gust of wind in her back that made her hair fall into her face as Pietro entered the room.

He always knew when his sister needed him. Natasha suspected that it was either a twin thing or the mental bond they shared which Wanda had created after gaining her powers when the thoughts of others had become too much to bear for her without an anchor.

Pietro stopped dead in his tracks as well, his eyes widening in shock.

"Has she ever done this before?", Natasha asked, her eyes not leaving the younger girl.

She heard Pietro swallow hard, before he answered. "No...Never."

They stood there for a few minutes unable to do anything as they tried to process what was happening when Natasha noticed that Wanda was beginning to struggle, sweat dripping from her forehead and mixing with her tears.

Suddenly the red disappeared and the brunette opened her eyes with a gasp, before she fell down onto her bed.

The second her body hit the soft blanket and pillow, Pietro was at her side, gently cupping her face with his hands as he whiped away his sister's tears.

"Si v poriadku? (Are you okay?)", he asked but Wanda still seemed too overwhelmed by her dream that she only managed a small nod.

Natasha sat down next to the twins, running a hand through Wanda's sweaty hair to keep it out of her face.

"It's okay, malyshka, it was just a dream.", the redhead said softly as she noticed that the younger girl was still struggling to catch her breath.

"Come on, Wanda, take a deep breath. In through the nose and out through the mouth, just like we practiced.", Natasha instructed as she simultaneously demonstrated the breathing exercise.

Wanda did her best to follow along until her breathing evened out.

"There you go, malyshka.", the russian smiled gently. Wanda smiled back as a silent 'thank you' before she looked up at her brother.

"Will you stay with me tonight?", she asked and Pietro nodded immediately.

"Of course, sestra.", he answered, kissing her forehead and laying down on his back while Natasha got up.

"Will you two be alright?", she asked and the twins nodded in sync.

Wanda cuddled into her brother, who wrapped his arms around her protectively. Natasha couldn't help but tuck them in before she left the room and closed the door behind her.
