Chapter 15 - mastering the chopsticks

"You should probably check up on Wanda.", Steve said as he entered the kitchen where Nat was currently cleaning some of the dishes Rhodey had forgotten to do last night. Accidentally of course.

"Why? Is she okay?", Nat asked worriedly, already putting away the cup she had been drying.

Steve held up both of his hands to calm her. "Easy there, mama bear. Wanda is alright.", he promised calmly, noticing a small blush on the redhead's cheeks.

Instead of pointing it out, he decided to ignore it and tell her about his encounter with Pietro.

"I just had a talk about appropriate clothing in a restaurant with her brother. I just figured she might have the same problem.", the supersoldier explained, watching the russian frown.

"What was Pietro planning on wearing?", she asked and Steve chuckled before answering.

"Training shorts.", he stated matter of factly, smiling at the laugh Nat let out.

"You're kidding!", accused the redhead, but soon her laughter died down as the blonde shook his head.

"Nope, dead serious.", he stated as Nat ran a hand through her hair.

"You're right, I should check up on Wanda. Will you-", the redhead started asking but Steve cut her off.

"Don't worry about the dishes, I'll take care of them."

The spy thanked him with a small smile and a kiss on the cheek, before leaving the kitchen.

As Natasha made her way through the long hallways, her thoughts kept wandering off to Steve.

He had been nothing but supportive when it came to the twins, which the redhead appreciated to a great extent.

Although she couldn't help but notice how her relationship towards the supersoldier had changed as well.

She and Steve had always been close but their shared worry and affection towards the twins not only forced them to be around each other even more, it also made them realize that maybe there was something more than just friendship between them.

Before the spy could go on to deny those feelings, her thoughts were interrupted a voice coming from Wanda's room.

The door was closed but Nat was able to hear it loud and clear, quickly realizing that it was Wanda talking.

Frowning, she stopped in her tracks in front of the door and listened.

"Great. This is exactly what I needed right now. Can you at least do something useful and tell me what to wear?", the brunette complained, confusing Nat even more.

Wanda was alone in her room, right? Or was her brother with her?

"Great... This is just great.", she heard Wanda say, but there still was no response from her brother.

"Seriously? That's what you're focusing on right now?", she heard the brunette say in an annoyed tone.

'Okay, this is getting out of hand...', Natasha thought to herself, the teenager's behavior concerning her.

Before she could stop herself, she knocked on the door and poked her head inside after a moment.

Wanda was alone in her room.

"Hey, malyshka, are you ready to go?", she asked, deciding that acting like she didn't know about Wanda talking to herself was the safest way to go right now, considering how stressed out the brunette seemed to be.

She glanced Wanda up and down, raising one eyebrow after noticing that she was still in her sweats.

"You know what, scratch that...", she finally said after noticing the clothes on Wanda's bed, entering the room completely and closing the door behind her.

Of course Steve had been right.

She walked over to the younger girl's closet.

"Sit down, malyshka. Don't worry, I've got this."

Later in the evening the four of them were sitting at a table in a quiet corner of a chinese restaurant, a variety of food in front of them.

Since neither of the twins had ever tried chinese before, Steve had ordered a bit of everything for them to try.

They had gone for the noodles first, which seemed to be the safest choice after Steve had explained that they tasted similar to the noodles they had back at the tower.

As time went by the two teenagers seemed to relax. Nat had picked a table in one of the quieter corners and had also paid attention to make reservations on a time where there wouldn't be too many people in the restaurant.

Pietro, sitting next to Steve and on the opposite side of his sister, suddenly seemed to be very interested in the chopsticks.

"What do I do with these?", the boy asked, picking them up and eyeing them suspiciously, making his sister giggle.

"You eat with them.", Nat answered, smiling as Pietro's face scrunched up in confusion. "No, I eat with this.", he stated, holding up his fork.

"Yeah, buddy, you do but the Chinese like to use chopsticks instead of forks.", Steve explained as the younger boy nodded.

"How? Like this?", the older Maximoff asked again, using one of the chopsticks to impale one of his sushi rolls.

Nat let out a chuckle. "No. Do you want me to show you how to use chopsticks?", she offered, watching the boy stuff the sushi roll into his mouth.

"No, thanks, this works just fine.", he answered with his mouth full, earning a kick against his shin from under the table.

"Ouch!", he exclaimed while glaring at his sister, who raised one of her eyebrows in response, a habit which she seemed to have picked up from Nat.

"Nerozprávaj sa s plnými ústami, braček. (Don't talk with you mouth full, brother.)", the brunette scolded to which Pietro simply rolled his eyes.

"I gotta go to the bathroom.", Pietro said suddenly, looking at Steve who nodded. "Come on, I'll show you where it is.", he said, standing up.

"Will you two be alright while we're gone?", the supersoldier asked.

"Yeah, I'll protect Wanda from the evil napkins.", Nat answered jokingly as Steve and Pietro walked towards the bathroom, laughing.

There was a moment of silence while Wanda played with the rings on her fingers and Nat debated on whether she should bring up the whole 'Are you talking to yourself?' situation or not.

Before she had the chance to figure out how one could possibly approach this kind of subject, Wanda turned her head to look at her.

"Can you teach me how to use the chopsticks, please?", she asked shyly, making Nat smile.

There would be other chances to talk to the girl, right now she just wanted to give her a normal experience at a restaurant without anything weird happening.

"Of course, malyshka.", the redhead answered softly, not regretting her choice when Wanda's eyes lit up.

"Alright, get your chopsticks.", Nat requested, reaching for her own chopsticks as the brunette did as she was told.

"Okay, hold out your hand as if you're going to shake hands with me."

Wanda did just that and Nat placed one of the chopsticks on the brunette's thumb, resting it against her palm.

"Now hold the second stick between your thumb and your forefinger.", the russian said while simultaneously demonstrating it on herself.

"Next step is to bend your ring finger and your little finger and tuck them underneath the lower stick.", Nat explained, as Wanda followed her instructions.

"Alright, now the last step is to put your middle finger under the top stick."

"And how do I eat now?", the brunette asked, holding the chopsticks in front of her face to study her grip.

"You move the top chopstick to grab the food.", the russian explained, grabbing one of the spring rolls.

"See? Now you try, malyshka.", she encouraged the brunette, who tried picking up one of the smaller sushi rolls.

It fell back down onto the plate after her first try but when she succeeded after the second try the whole room lit up with her smile.

"I did it!", she exclaimed happily, infecting the redhead with happiness as well.

"Good job, malyshka!", Natasha praised just as the boys returned from the bathroom.

"Wait that's how you use those things?", Pietro asked, sitting back down as he watched his sister using the chopsticks.

"That looks so cool, I wanna try too!", he exclaimed before anyone had the chance to answer him, eagerly picking up his own chopsticks.

While Wanda taught her brother what Nat had just taught her, the redhead felt her heart warm up with joy.

Maybe, just maybe, the twins could give her something that the Red Room so desperately had tried to take away from her.
