Chapter 14 - i'll be there for you
Natasha and Pietro were playing UNO when Wanda finally emerged from the bathroom, her hair and body wrapped in fluffy towels.
She looked rather startled for a moment, not having expected to see Nat, but the surprise on her face was quickly replaced by a happy smile.
Before either of them could say anything Pietro threw his last card on top of the pile and jumped up in victory. "I won!", he exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear.
"Well done, buddy.", Natasha praised, smiling as well. "Put the cards away, will you? I want to talk to you two.", she added and Pietro nodded.
He began to gather up the cards while his sister fetched her clothes and walked back into the bathroom to get changed into them.
While both of the twins finished their tasks, Nat went over to Wanda's dresser and grabbed the girl's black hairbrush and her strawberry scented face lotion, getting ready for their after-shower ritual.
Pietro finished his task first, storing away all of the cards before he made himself comfortable in the red beanbag Steve had gifted his sister a while ago.
When Wanda stepped out of the bathroom, this time dressed in an oversized hoddie, black jogging pants and fluffy socks, her hair was still wet which lead to it being extra curly.
The brunette noticed the brush in Natasha's hand and a huge smile spread over her face. She quickly walked over to the bed and sat down, her back facing the redhead, who immediately began brushing through Wanda's curls.
"Wait a minute, that's my hoddie!", Pietro complained upon noticing his sister's attire. She was wearing one of his blue tie-dye hoddies which had a small yellow lightning embroidered on the front, just above the left breast.
"Not anymore.", his sister smirked, sticking out her tongue after Pietro huffed at her words with fake annoyance. "Whatever."
Nat smiled to herself at the twin's carefree behavior while simultaneously trying to brush through the younger girls hair without hurting her.
"What do you guys think about going out with me and Steve this evening?", the redhead asked the twins, appearing nonchalant to not make it seem like a big deal. She felt Wanda stiffen slightly.
"Going out? Where?", her brother asked curiously, obviously not opposed to the idea of spending time with the two Avengers outside of the tower.
"I made reservations at a chinese restaurant.", she answered, putting the hairbrush away so she could softly scratch the back of Wanda's neck, a gesture which seemed to help the younger girl relax.
"Cool, we've never had chinese food before!", Pietro revealed excitedly while hastily getting out of the bean bag.
"So you wanna go?", Nat asked smiling, although she already knew the answer. "Yes, of course!", the boy answered, heading for the door.
"I gotta go, the Giants have a game in five minutes and Steve promised that he would watch it with me.", Pietro explained while opening the door, his thoughts already having moved on to the next topic thanks to his ADHD.
"Of course, buddy. Have fun!", the redhead called after him, before the door fell shut and Pietro was gone in a stripe of white.
The room was filled with a comfortable silence as Natasha picked up brushing Wanda's hair once again.
"You haven't said anything yet, malyshka.", the redhead reminded her in a soft tone. Wanda sighed.
"I don't think it's a good idea to take me with you...", the brunette confessed, almost whispering. Having expected this kind of reaction from the younger girl, Nat simply went on with their routine while she waited for Wanda to elaborate.
The spy moved backwards on the bed, until her back was met with the headboard and she sat down with her legs crossed. Wanda leaned back and let her head lay in the redhead's lap while the aforementioned grabbed the strawberry scented lotion from the bedside table and began gathering some of it onto her fingers before she softly applied it onto Wanda's face.
"Baby, we've talked about this before. You need to get out of the tower every once in a while.", Natasha said gently but seriously as she tapped the younger girl's nose, making her smile.
"I know... But restaurants are crowded places...", the brunette pointed out, frowning at the thought of having to sit in a room full of people.
The russian was quick to run her finger over the wrinkles between the sokovian's eyebrows, effectively forcing her to relax her face.
"I just... I don't want to hurt anyone, Tasha...", Wanda sighed, closing her eyes.
Nat stopped her ministrations and used the remaining lotion on her fingers to moisturize her hands, mentally preparing herself for another deep talk.
"Malyshka, sit up please.", the spy requested, watching the brunette do as she was told and turn around so she could face her.
"Why do you think that you will hurt someone?", the older woman asked, noticing that Wanda began fidgeting with her fingers.
"Well I uhm... I get nervous around people. Especially around many people.", she started explaining, unable to look Natasha in the eyes.
"And when I'm nervous, sometimes I can't control my powers. They just lash out when it gets too much.", the brunette finished, still fiddling with her fingers.
"Wanda, sweetie, your brother and I will be right by your side the whole time. If you get nervous you can tell one of us and we'll help you calm down.", Natasha argued, taking the younger girl's hands into her own to show her that she wasn't afraid.
"And if it gets too much, we can leave.", the redhead promised, running her thumbs over the back of Wanda's hands.
"Okay. I guess I can try.", the brunette agreed after a beat of silence, making Natasha smile proudly. She leaned down and kissed the back of Wanda's hand.
"I know that you won't hurt anyone, malyshka.", she whispered into the space between them.
'It's not me who I'm worried about...', Wanda thought to herself, hiding her fear behind a small smile, leaning into the redhead before she could notice.
-
When it was time for Wanda to get ready for dinner, she found herself at a loss of clothes.
Usually she would just stay in her (or her brother's) sweats the whole day, but she figured that she couldn't do that tonight. Especially not with Captain America and the Black Widow by her side.
Although her closet was filled with clothes, more than she had ever possessed before, she had no idea what to wear.
That annoyed her to no end.
She had never been to a restaurant before, but she had overheard Steve telling Pietro to get out of his sporty gear and change into something more formal for dinner, so she would do the same.
Carefully she reached into the closet and pulled out a black top Natasha had bought for her on their shopping trip a while ago. She laid it down on her bed as an option, not quite sure if it would be appropriate to wear in a restaurant.
"Maybe I should wear a dress....", the sokovian thought out loud, pulling one of her dresses out of the closet before eyeing it suspiciously.
"Or is that too much?", she asked again, frowning.
"You should not wear short sleeves in public.", the voice of her 'roommate' rang through her head. Wanda groaned in annoyance.
"Great. This is exactly what I needed right now.", the brunette said, her words dripping with sarcasm.
"Can you at least do something useful and tell me what to wear?", she asked, still annoyed, though she wasn't sure who she was more irritated by, herself or the voice.
"Don't ask me, honey, I haven't been to a restaurant in this century yet.", the voice replied unhelpfully, making Wanda roll her eyes.
"Great... This is just great.", she sighed, dropping the dress next to the top onto her bed. Her gaze lingered for a moment before she looked back at her closet.
"Hey, at least you're experiencing your first normal teenager problem right now.", her roommate mused as Wanda chuckled at the absurdity of the whole situation.
"Seriously? That's what you're focusing on right now?", she asked, a little less annoyed when she realized that the voice must have come to her conclusion because of the many movies and TV-shows Wanda had watched in the past few weeks.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door, which opened not a second later. Nat poked her head inside.
"Hey, malyshka, are you ready to go?", the redhead asked, raising one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows when she noticed that Wanda was still in her sweats.
"You know what, scratch that...", she mumbled while fully entering the sokovian's room. One look at her desperate expression, the opened closet and the two clothing items on the bed told the spy everything she needed to know.
Closing the door, the redhead headed straight for Wanda's closet.
"Sit down, malyshka. Don't worry, I've got this.", the redhead said softly, looking through the brunette's clothes.
"Let's just hope she chooses something with long sleeves.", the voice in Wanda's head said.
'Shut up!', the brunette thought to herself, effectively silencing the voice so she could get ready with Natasha's help.
