Chapter 11 - uncertainty
After Natasha had left, Wanda gathered her thoughts before she made her way over to her brother's room, which was right next to her own.
Before she had the chance to knock, the door to Pietro's room opened and Steve stood in front of her. His eyes widened slightly when he noticed her but he immediately caught himself and smiled.
"Hey, Wanda.", he greeted her, taking a step to the side so she could enter the room, which she did.
"Hi.", she answered, smiling back softly. Steve scratched the back of his head. Despite being the leader of earth's mightiest heroes, Captain America was incredibly awkward, especially around the twins.
At first Wanda had thought that he didn't know how to act around them but she had realized that he was just scared of making them feel uncomfortable.
Soon his awkwardness became one of his most endearing traits for Wanda because he proved to be so sweet and caring.
'Just like otec (father).', she thought to herself, immediately pushing that thought out of her head. Steve was not their father.
As the Avenger cleared his throat, Wanda was pulled out of her thoughts. "I'm going to leave you two to it.", he stated, shooting them one last smile before he made his way through the floor, towards the living area.
Wanda watched him leave for a second before closing the door and turning to her brother.
"Did he talk to you about that legal guardian thing?", she asked and he nodded. There was a moment of silence where neither of them knew what to say next.
"So who do you want it to be?", Pietro spoke first, jumping on his bed. His sister followed him slowly, though she decided to simply sit down without the risk of breaking the bed.
"I uhm... I haven't really thought about it yet. Tasha just told me too.", she answered, half lying. Deep down she knew who she wanted to have as her guardian.
Pietro huffed knowingly, laying back and staring at the ceiling. "There must have been someone in your head when she told you.", he pressed, already knowing who his sister had in mind.
The brunette lay down next to her brother with a sigh. "Kind of...", she answered, her gaze not leaving the ceiling either.
Silence settled over the room again but this time it felt more tense than before. Wanda thought about Natasha.
The russian spy had not hesitated to take them in, showing them things they had never seen before, even teaching them how to read.
She was already like a mother to them, at least that's what Wanda thought.
"You can't tell her, Wanda.", Pietro, once again, broke the silence. The other twin turned her head to look at him. "I don't know what you're talking about.", she claimed, though they both knew that that was a lie.
With a sigh Pietro sat up, looking at his sister with rare seriousness. "Remember what matka (mother) taught us. The world is not ready for witches yet. They can't know who you are.", he reminded her.
It hurt her to admit it but her brother was right. She had to listen to their mother.
Pietro seemed to catch onto her disappointment, opening his arms for her. Without hesitation the brunette climbed into her brother's lap, cuddling into his chest.
"You're right... I'm sorry.", she mumbled. "It's just that... I feel like I can trust her. She understands me, just like matka (mother) used to.", she revealed, feelings her brother stiffen at her words.
"You... You think of her as a mother...?", he asked in disbelief, which made her lean back to look at him.
"Maybe... I don't know.", she answered, running a hand through her hair, watching as her brother went quiet.
Slowly she climbed out of his lap and sat down next to him again. "If I was... Would that be such a bad thing?", she asked, but her brother just kept on staring in the other direction.
"Pietro?", she whispered carefully.
"Už máme rodičov, Wanda. Nikto ich nikdy nenahradí. (We already have parents, Wanda. Nobody will ever replace them.)", he declared, speaking in their mother tongue.
"Nechcem ich nahradiť! (I don't want to replace them!)", Wanda reassured quickly, taking his face into her hands.
"Pietro, I know that there will never be anyone to replace them. They're our parents and they always will be. But they're gone...", she said as she watched a silent tear roll down her brother's cheeks.
It was rare for him to display his emotions like that. He usually had to be the strong one, always keeping his emotions at bay to care for his sister.
"I know... I know...", Wanda whispered, wiping away his tears and hugging him closely. "I miss them too..."
-
Something didn't feel right and it wasn't the awful smoothie, Rhodey had just made for her. Well not entirely.
After telling Wanda about how they would have to choose someone as their legal guardian, Natasha was constantly feeling nervous.
It was certainly unlike her to be nervous for no reason. Usually the spy knew how to keep her cool, wanting to stay a closed book for other people.
"You okay?", she heard a familiar voice say behind her. She didn't need to turn her head to see who it was.
"Yeah, I'm fine.", she lied easily, watching as Steve walked past her to pour himself a glass of water.
Taking a sip, he watched as his partner once again got lost in her own head. "So did you tell Wanda about choosing a legal guardian?", he asked, watching the redhead nod with a frown on her face.
He smiled as he realized why his friend was seeming nervous.
"You want them to choose you.", he stated, making the spy's eyes widen.
"Excuse me?", she exclaimed, the shock evident on her face, telling him that he had hit the right nerve.
"You want them to choose you as their legal guardian, don't you?", he repeated his suspicion, expecting the spy to tell him that he was wrong.
Instead she surprised them both by sighing on defeat. "Yeah, I do...", she admitted as Steve sat down next to her. "Is that bad?", she asked as she turned her head to look at him, a rare look of vulnerability displayed on her face.
"No. In fact, we all think that they should choose you.", he answered honestly, watching her eyes widen in surprise.
"Really? Why?", she asked curiously, punching his arm to wipe a knowing grin off his face.
"You care for them more than anyone here, Natasha. If I didn't know any better I would think that you already are their mother.", he stated, watching Natasha get lost in her thoughts again.
"Hey... That's a good thing. You deserve this and so do they.", he reassured, smiling softly.
"You're right.", the spy finally admitted, smiling a little herself.
"Of course I am, I'm Captain America.", Steve said with a grin, trying to lighten the mood.
He succeeded, having made Natasha laugh out loud.
"Cocky much, Rogers?", she teased, making him smile.
"Only for you, Romanoff."
