Chapter 10 - a legal problem
The twins had been living with the Avengers for a few weeks now, slowly adjusting to their newfound freedom.
As promised, Steve had started taking Pietro with him on his morning runs, working on the speedster's control at the same time.
Pietro had the habit of running in superspeed without noticing until it was too late, so Steve used their morning runs as daily training. The younger man would only be allowed to run as fast as Steve until he was told otherwise.
Usually they would do a few laps around Central Park in "super soldier speed" before Steve allowed Pietro to speed in his own pace a little longer.
The speedster seemed to be doing great with this technique and soon he was able to control his powers.
His sister, however, wasn't as lucky.
She struggled with her powers a lot and avoided using them whenever she could.
Still, sometimes she would hear someome else's thoughts or catch onto their feelings without wanting to.
The team had had to adjust to that as well, learning to control their thoughts around the younger Maximoff.
Wanda hated that.
She didn't want to be a burden, didn't want to be treated differently than the others. If only they knew that she wasn't as out of control as they thought she was.
Natasha helped her with gaining the upper hand over her telekinesis with their own little training sessions. Soon enough, Wanda was a pro, moving random objects without touching them or shooting energy blast without accidentally burning Sam's suit.
In the team's eyes, the Maximoffs had made good progress. With a few more weeks they would be in full control over their powers.
"You wish, Wanda."
"Can we please not do this now?", Wanda answered out loud, not looking up from the book in her hands.
After their little trip to the mall, Natasha had taught Wanda how to read in English, since the young sokovian only learned how to speak the language when she was younger.
At first Wanda had been embarrassed over the fact that she couldn't even read the books which Nat had bought for her but the spy somehow had figured out that the younger woman was only staring at the words in front of her without actually reading them.
They had shared a honest conversation after that which had lead to daily reading lessons with both of the twins.
Wanda was glad she could finally read again after so many years, which is why she was currently sitting in her bed, practicing her reading skills outside of her lessons with Nat.
Unfortunately, she figured that the quietness was an invitation to speak, breaking the peaceful silence in Wanda's head.
"You never let me talk to you, Maximoff, but guess what: I don't care.", the female voice in her head replied.
With a loud sigh, Wanda placed a bookmark between the pages of her fantasy novel, before putting it aside on the nightstand next to her bed.
"Why do you never let me talk to you anymore? We used to have such nice conversations.", the voice went on, almost sounding melancholic.
"Yeah well, I was alone in a dark cell with mad scientists experimenting on me. You were kind of the only one I could talk to.", Wanda sighed again, laying down on her back from her previous sitting position against the headboard.
"Talking to you makes me feel like I'm crazy.", she added truthfully, immediately feeling a stabbing pain in the back of her skull.
"Ow! Hey!", the young woman cried out, wincing in pain. "I was only being honest with you!", she defended, relaxing as the pain went away.
"You're not crazy, Wanda Maximoff.", the voice stated firmly, making Wanda laugh out loud. "Yeah, sure. What else would you call me talking to you, hm?", she shot back, waiting for another sting of pain, which never came.
"Bonding with your roommate?", the voice answered, making Wanda roll her eyes. "Very funny.", the brunette said, not at all amused.
She was about to ask her "roommate" what she had wanted to talk about in the first place when a knock on her door stopped her.
"Come in!", she called out, sitting up on her bed again. The doorknob turned and Wanda watched as Natasha entered with a smile.
"Hey, malyshka.", the redhead greeted, closing the door behind her and walking over to the bed.
"Can I talk to you for a second?", she asked as she sat down next to Wanda, running a hand through her chestnut hair.
The younger woman nodded, leaning into Natasha's touch.
"I'm speaking for the whole team when I say that we're all really proud of you and you brother.", the redhead began, letting Wanda lay her head on her lap. She started playing with the younger woman's hair.
"We're glad that you guys trust us now and that you feel at home here. That's all we really wanted.", the Avenger continued. Wanda smiled up at her. "Thank you, Tasha."
"You're welcome, malyshka, but there is more.", the redhead stated, making Wanda look at her curiously.
"I talked to Tony and there are still some legal issues that need to be taken care of if you and your brother are going to stay in the states.", Natasha said slowly, wanting the younger girl to understand how important this was.
Wanda frowned and sat up, looking at Natasha. "What do you mean?", she asked.
"Oh damn, they want to get rid of you."
"You and your brother are still minors, malyshka.", Natasha explained softly, taking Wanda's hand into her own.
"And? That isn't a big deal, right?", the younger Maximoff asked. "Unfortunately it is.", the spy answered truthfully, watching as Wanda put some distance between them.
"Y-You don't want us here anymore?", the brunette asked with a shaky voice, close to tears. Natasha's eyes widened as she immediately reached out for Wanda's hand.
"Of course we still want you here, malyshka.", the redhead reassured, noticing the younger girl relax once again. "But because we want you here, we need to make sure that the government doesn't have any reason to send you back to Sokovia, okay?", she added and the younger girl nodded in agreement.
"What do we need to do?", she asked after a moment of silence. Natasha once again, ran her hand through Wanda's hair, tucking a stray chestnut curl behind her ear.
"Because you're still underage, you need a legal guardian here in the US.", Natasha explained, watching as Wanda frowned in confusion once again.
"You mean like... parents?", she asked carefully, looking up at Nat with uncertainty laced onto her features.
"You don't need to call anyone here mom or dad. It will just be on the papers if that's what you want.", the spy reassured softly and the younger girl nodded.
The redhead gave Wanda a few moment to comprehend what she had just told her, before she spoke up again. "You don't need to decide right now but we wanted you and your brother to choose who you want as your legal guardian."
Wanda smiled at that. She had a choice and nobody was urging her to rush it. An overwhelming desire to hug the russian spy took over her, so she decided to just go for it.
One second Nat registered the younger girl's smile and the next thing she knew, the small brunette had wrapped her tender arms around the russian's neck.
"Thank you.", Wanda mumbled under her breath. Now it was Nat's turn to smile.
"You're very welcome, malyshka."
