Seven
I was currently setting my bike in parking so I could climb into the elevator or use the stairs up to my apartment. I was smiling to myself at the thought of finally being with my baby when it occured to me that I currently had no job, was way late on my two months rent and was living off of my surviving savings. Yay!
I pushed the salty thoughts to the back of my mind as I clumbered up the stairs. What was I going to do? I had looked almost everywhere for a job and nothing. No one wanted to hire me because I was either too young or they just didn't want part timers. I didn't know what to do anymore but wait for someone among the "we'll call you ones" to do so.
The stairs were too short. I was already at my doorstep. I reached into my backpack and removed my keys before inserting them in the hole.
Meredith greeted me, not with her usual meows but a white envelope in her mouth.
"Hey babe." I picked her up and kissed her head. "How are you today?" I asked and she shifted in my hands as I got the envelope out of her mouth. "Let's see what you got for mummy, why don't we?" I hugged Mer on my left shoulder and she placed her front legs on my leather covered chest. I was smiling at the gesture but it died when I read the letter.
Miss Swift.
I have tried to be understanding with you but you're late on rent for two going on three months. Not to mention the fact that you're underage and should be in a guardian's care. I'd turn you into the authorities but I won't. Just please be gone within two weeks.
Your landlord
Mrs Hayes.
Ps: Don't look for the money within assigned time as I won't take it. Just kindly evict my premises. Thank you.
I groaned painedly and threw myself on the couch where we both fell asleep. I was awoken by the sound of Taylor Swift blasting in my apartment, or soon to be ex apartment. I rubbed my eyes and removed Mer off of me. Reaching into my bag, I removed my phone to see Everley's caller ID on the screen.
"Evie," I greeted.
"Tay, I'm honestly on the verge of death at the moment. My mom gave me this awful green tea saying it's good for the pain but I think it just made it all the worse and then I threw up all over my bathroom which she had to clean up after. No I didn't feel sorry, she sort of deserved it anyway what happened at school today? Any drama? I could use a bit of cheering up."
I sighed. "For someone on the verge of dying, you do not value your last breath," I observed.
Eve groaned. "What the hell you party pooper? Just tell me, speaking of parties, remember yesterday? At the locker when I called you? Yeah I wanted to tell you about this party at a college frat house next week I think-"
"Evie!" I snapped. "Will you please, for the both of us take a breather? For starters, nothing happened at school today except getting bothered by Grayson..."
"Georgia," Eve corrected me.
"Whatever," I said. "And I'm not going to any party. Don't ask why cause it's self explanatory. I'll even probably be out on my ass anyway."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that I'm currently staring at a white piece of paper otherwise known as an eviction letter Everley."
"W-what? Tay I. .."
"Yeah, that's what's going on. And even if I get the money, she doesn't want it. She just wants me out of here because apparently, I'm a minor too. How great is life?"
"Apparently? You're a minor love," Evie said.
"Yeah? I never would've guessed."
I could almost see Eve roll her eyes. "Whatever. Anyways, looks like you have no option but to-"
"Don't even mention it," I got up from the couch. "I'm not asking my family for help. Period."
"But, but why Tay? You're going to have to swallow your pride sooner than later because I don't see many options here!" Eve snaps. In case you hadn't noticed, she is the curious type. So she asked why I was living alone at seventeen and I had told her that I didn't want anything to do with my family. Nothing more.
So naturally, she's curious for more information. "I, well ... "
"Uhuh? I'm listening."
I blew a stray curl out of my face. "I'll figure it out Evie. I always do, now get off the phone and get sone sleep, goodnight." I hang up and made my way into my bedroom, stripping down to my bottoms and stepping into the bathroom after which I moisturised and slept.
"Meow!" Said my alarm clock. I groaned as I rolled over, sleepily petting Meredith's fur.
"Sleep well buddy?"
I jumped out of bed, glancing at my Saturday alarm clock, it had to go off at ten sharp, I didn't enjoy waking up early but I had a stomach to feed, two actually. So one way or another, I needed to find a job.
"You woke me up twenty minutes early Mer!" I complained, plopping back down. The bed bounced beneath my weight as Meredith did a perfect job of ignoring me.
I figured I'd just take the opportunity of extra minutes to get some work done around the apartment, maybe pack up some of my things. I had yet to figure out where I was going to go from here with only a few savings left on my name and no job. But I'd figure it out, I always did. Not to mention that I had a whole week to do so.
"Hey," I plastered a small tired smile on my face as I greeted the waitress at the seventh cafe I'd visited today. It'd been four straight hours of roaming around the hot summer sun in Lakewood town, four straight hours of 'we'll call you if something comes up'. Basically, four straight hours of nothing.
"Hello, how may we help you?" The girl replied, stopping in her tracks and patiently regarding me with a brown eyed gaze. She seemed friendly enough. Or maybe she was just being a waitress.
"I was uh ... I was wondering if you guys were..."
"Hiring?" Annalise, as her name tag read, asked me.
I nodded awkwardly. "Uh ... Yes?"
Annalise sympathetically smiled at me. "I'm sorry babe, but you can leave your details-" she pulled a pen out of the pockets of her apron and handed it to me along with a small notepad. "I'll let Mrs Peppy know to contact you first in case anything comes up." She held her hand out. "Annalise by the way."
I took it and smiled. "I noticed."
"Yeah?" Annalise said. "Have they given you a star in the Hollywood walk of fame genius?"
I chuckled softly. "Taylor," I said. "Taylor Swift." I didn't feel like leaving any more contacts today. My hand was unbelievably tired of writing and nobody ever seemed to call anyway.
Annalise raised her eyebrows at me and opened her mouth, maybe contemplating on whether to say something but she seemed to decide against it. "Nice to meet you, Taylor. Pun unintended! I swear it!" She kissed the tips of her thumb and fore finger and threw them up in the air.
I laughed a little and winked at her. "I could show you incredible things." I sang.
She shrugged. "Magic, madness, heaven sin."
"Saw you there and I thought. .."
"Oh my God! Look at that face!"
"You look like my next mistake..."
"Love's a game, wanna play?"
And we continued taking turns singing, I almost forgot why I was here in the first place. Another girl in the same red and black checkered plaid shirt as Annalise passed us by but didn't pay us any attention.
"So it's gonna be forever?" I didn't sing this line. Annalise burst out laughing so loud a customer complained.
"Hey will you shut up? I'm tryna work here!"
How polite!
Yay!
