Chapter 19: Into the Light

Blair closed up her shop after the sun set and she drove down the freeway over to Maddox's penthouse. A lot of things were buzzing through her head like for one the girl Holly, the crow and Maddox, but the one that didn't sit well with her was Alexander Ainsley. She hoped that Maddox washed his hands of such a man by now or else trouble was near wherever that man went.

Blair parked her car and strolled inside the busy hotel. She would've passed by the crowd of people like she was invisible, but an eerie force blocked her from entering. Blair didn't panic nor did she show any restraint.

"Ma'am, are you okay?" asked the doorman behind her.

"Yeah," answered Blair with a bright smile. "I just felt a little light headed."

The doorman smiled and went back to his duties. Blair lifted her foot once again and stepped over to get inside; this time there was less restraint on her body. Blair looked around the crowd of people and spotted Alexander. No one in the crowd could see what she saw; a foreboding darkness loomed behind that man like a plague that was growing into an entity all on its own.

"This is bad," she whispered and the strange force nudged her when it heard her voice.

It didn't speak or have any thoughts but Blair understood it clearly; it was here to do evil and only sin. She now realized why she got such bad vibes from Alexander. Blair wondered if Alexander was evil because of the dark spirit or if the dark spirit chose Alexander for a reason. However, Blair knew that these evil spirits didn't latch themselves onto people that weren't already evil. Alexander Ainsley was a good target since he had heinous thoughts in that head of his.

Alexander didn't pay heed to her as he passed by.

"Mr. Ainsley," she called out to get his attention, but more so of the evil spirit behind him.

Alexander's black eyes looked at her plainly. "You were Maddox's date," he pointed out.

"Ms. Lightwood," she reminded him although he looked quite disinterested.

He quirked a brow. "What do want?" he asked bluntly.

"Just wondering where you're headed," she said. "Visiting the town for some sight-seeing, perhaps?"

"No," he said bitterly. "I'm leaving town and headed home."

Blair looked past his eyes and into the void behind him. She recognized that murky smell that petrified her body, but she also realized that this ghoul was still at an infant level, which was a good thing. "That's too bad," she said. "I hope you had a good trip though?"

He grumbled something under his breath, she didn't hear him because she was too busy looking dead straight in the eyes of the ghoul behind him. "I have to go," he said. "Did you need something, Ms. Lightwood?"

She beamed a smile. "No," she said as she purposely blocked the exit. "I would love to give you my business card though. In case you decide to visit Meadow-Mist again-" she shuffled through her purse- "I swear I put it right here." Blair dug through her purse to find her card and the hex that could save Alexander from this ghoul.

"I don't need your card," Alexander moved to leave.

"Here it is," she said as she held the card in front of him and the hex secretly in her other hand. "I hope you have a safe journey back to where you came from. Far away, back into the mouth of your dark home." Alexander didn't understand her, in fact, he looked at her like she was insane. But she had to chant the incantation before she could slip the hex into his coat pocket. He pushed past her after he called her crazy and strode into his car.

"Blair," another voice she recognized instantly as Tony's called out for her attention, but she was too busy watching the ghoul vanish under the beaming hot sunlight. "Blair?" The ghoul vanished and she knew that the hex would send the evil spirit back to where it came from in about an hour. "What are we staring at?" asked Tony.

Blair shrugged. "The beautiful sunset," she said. "Isn't it just marvellous?"

Tony puzzled for a moment. "Sure is," he still answered although he was confused by the sudden change in her.

"Where's Maddox?" she asked.

"In his penthouse," said Tony. "He told me to bring you up because he's with some guests right now."

Blair's ears perked. "Guests?" she asked. "Maddox isn't one to receive guests in his penthouse-" and then it clicked to her- "unless it's family. Is it family, Tony?"

"How do you do that?" asked Tony befuddled. "Yes. It's his mom and sister."

"Does Maddox want me to wait here until he finishes?" she asked Tony.

"On the contrary," he said. "They're all waiting for you."

Blair tilted her head. "Well then, let's not keep them waiting."

-Maddox's POV-

Maddox sat in front of his sister and his mom who had arrived to Meadow-Mist an hour ago. He had told them about Blair becoming his girlfriend. But he didn't bring them here to let them know about his dating life, he wanted them to get the same closure he got, especially for his mom.

"I can't believe you're dating Blair," exclaimed Melinda. "I knew it. I just knew when I saw you two the other day that there was something going on."

"This is a first, Maddox," said his mom. "Usually you don't like to introduce your girlfriends to me."

"She not like the others, mom," Maddox smirked as he remembered that this woman was way more special.

"She most definitely is not like the others, mom," said Melinda chirpily. "She owns the cutest little shop in town. You'll love it for sure."

Their laughed. "It's seems like Blair Lightwood has both my children under her spell," she teased. "I'm eager to meet her even more now."

"She should be here soon." Maddox lifted his phone when suddenly the front door opened and Tony strode inside with the woman of the hour behind him.

Tony waved goodbye and Blair walked towards them with an elegant poise that wasn't something that could be taught. Although she was dressed in a regular pair of jeans and a tight shirt, she walked like she was worth millions. Maddox noted her mysterious smile that was bewitching to any beholder. She was captivating no matter how she moved or smiled. Her sparkling sapphire eyes winked with amusement that instantly brightened when they assessed their surroundings. Her gaze landed on him and that was when he spotted that falter in her demeanour; she blushed and her smile turned shy for him.

"Blair," he got out of his seat. "This is my mom, Eleanor Steele."

Blair's polite smile was calming and sweet. "Mrs. Steele," she extended her hand. "Blair Lightwood."

"My kids haven't stopped talking about you," said Eleanor. "And now that I've seen you with my own eyes, I can tell why. You are stunning and please call me Eleanor."

Blair blushed. "Thank you, Eleanor."

-Blair's POV-

"How about I get some tea," said Melinda.

"Hold on," Blair dug through her bag and found a canister of dried lavender. "Here, make lavender chai and put milk instead of water." Melinda grabbed the small box from Blair and headed towards the kitchen.

"Is this your first time to Meadow-Mist Valley?" asked Blair.

"Yes," answered Eleanor. "I hope to explore this sweet little town for as long as I'm here."

Blair nodded. "You don't stay in one town for too long, do you?"

The room grew quiet.

Blair stared deep into the eyes of the elegant woman sitting in front of her. But behind all of that elegance and riches was a woman whose heart was broken and black. Eleanor wore a pale pink notch collar, double breasted tweed blazer dress, which complimented her caramel hair that was tied in a loose bun; it looked like it hadn't given much effort. Blair noticed the manicured nails but weary hands and the heavy sapphire that sat on her left ring finger; it gleamed under the light even if it was tainted with sadness.

Eleanor composed herself with a smile. "I like to travel a lot," she said.

"No," Blair shook her head. "You're running away...from home. The very home you don't feel safe in anymore."

Eleanor's green eyes gaped at Blair. "What are you saying?"

Blair took a deep breath; she smelt the lavender brewing in the kitchen and mixed in was all of this family's anxiety. "Why did you invite me today, Maddox?" she turned her sharp gaze at the man who was watching her closely.

"You know why," he said. His amber gaze told her everything and it gave her permission above all else.

"I'm sorry about your late husband," said Blair and suddenly a cup clattered behind them in the kitchen where Melinda finished the tea.

The lines on Eleanor's face strained when she looked at her son. "You told her about Roman?" she asked.

Maddox shook his head. "She came to me," he said.

Eleanor rubbed the ache growing in her head when Melinda arrived with the tea. "How about we enjoy some tea," said Melinda, she obviously tried to lessen the tension in the room.

Blair got out of her seat and took the one right next to Eleanor. "I can see that you loved your husband very much," she said. "So much that when he died you did too. That piece of you never healed but you put up a brave face for your kids-" Eleanor's hands started to tremble, but Blair eased the pain when she grabbed them in her own steady grasp- "You have done well, Eleanor. I think it is time to face what you closed away. Don't you?" Blair saw the shift in those green eyes that had golden flecks scattered in them. They transformed from steady and composed to vulnerable and alone. "There you are," mumbled Blair as she finally talked to the woman who wasn't just a mother, but the widow who lost her soulmate.

"How are you doing this?" asked Eleanor.

"I have a particular skill in helping people find peace," said Blair. "But before I do or say anything else, why don't we enjoy this cup of tea." Blair grabbed the last two cups and handed one to Eleanor. She watched for the moment when all of their lips were on rim of the cup. "Lavender," she spoke gently, "the soothing fragrance of this flower brings one's mind and body to a state of utter relaxation." Blair inhaled the deep spice of the flower and sent the waves of her magic around the room. "Breathe in the flower and then let the tension go," she instructed, "it's very easy to let it all go and to remain calm."

A couple of moments went by when the time slowed around them. All the Steele family members let the rigidity pressure go like the witch instructed.

"Your husband did not die in vain," said Blair. "He died saving his child and with no regret in his heart."

Eleanor's eyes grew wet, but she no tear fell like there were none left. "I didn't not expect for my husband to leave me like that."

Blair took a sip of her tea. "No one expects to leave this world so tragically," she told Eleanor. "But death does not hold back when it wants to take us. One can only hope to leave once they are finished with this life, but that is just mere hope in this game. So, there is no point in regretting anything when eventually everything will just vanish."

"I don't know how to accept that," Eleanor confessed.

"You have regrets about your marriage," stated Blair.

"My marriage was perfect," retorted Eleanor.

Blair smiled. "But you regret not spending enough time together," she said.

Eleanor shook her head. "Everything felt so insignificant after he was taken away from me."

Blair put her empty cup down. "You had a lovely marriage, Eleanor. And you have the support of your children," said Blair. "Don't you think Roman would have wanted you to find importance in your life again?"

"How do I do that?" asked Eleanor with disbelief.

"Let Roman go," said Blair. "You need to understand that he needs to move on as well."

"I do understand," said Eleanor.

Blair was surprised that Eleanor didn't ask many questions to Blair about how all of this was possible, but then she remembered Maddox and understood why Eleanor was so open-minded. "Then that's good," she said when she felt a light enter the room. Blair's magic awakened with a rush of heat that warmed her like the sun would on a hot summer day. She didn't need to look or feel to know that Roman had joined them. "He's here," she revealed.

All of them gaped at her, but Eleanor smiled. "I felt it too," she said. "That warmth was him, wasn't it?"

Blair nodded. "He's here to say goodbye, Elle."

Eleanor's gaze shattered like glass. "He used to call me Elle," she said. "Oh lord, he's really here."

Roman walked around and stood in front of Blair. "Tell them that I am so proud of them," he said. "That my last thought was how much I loved them and that covered all the pain of dying."

"I will," said Blair.

Eleanor grabbed Blair's hand. "What is he saying?" she asked eagerly.

"That's he ready to move on if you are?" asked Blair.

"I am, if that's what brings him peace of course," said Eleanor.

Blair looked into Roman's deep amber eyes which were busy taking one final look at his family. Roman laid his hand on each of his kids' shoulder before he caressed his wife's cheek. Their amazed eyes landed on Blair and all she could was smile.

"All of you just witnessed a beautiful thing," she said with a flutter of joy in her voice. Roman turned around and walked into the light. "He's gone," she announced with a deep breath that allowed her magic to return to her body and the portal to the afterlife closed.

Eleanor, Maddox and Melinda grew quiet. They had no idea what to say after experiencing such a phenomenon.

"How about I make some dinner and we can talk some more," suggested Blair. The Steele family followed her to the kitchen as she explained what had just occurred and how Roman felt with moving on with his life.

This was the work of a Lightwood witch. As Blair explained this journey to the family and the magic behind life, she realized that this was what her ancestors worked towards. They made lives of good people easier and more resilient with joy and healing. The art of being a witch came to test Blair today, and Blair knew that she passed.
