Chapter 7: JADE

My mom shut the front door after bringing the rest of my things inside of the house. She took deep breaths before harshly placing her hands on her hip and looking at the three of us on the couch. Me, Ollie, and his new friend Jade.

Mom pointed a finger at Ollie. "You will never leave this house without telling someone where you are and who you're with. And UNTIL me or your sister meets them. You had us thinking you were kidnap."

Jade stared at mother. She didn't seem phased seeing Ollie get yelled at. She was probably only 5 feet tall. Her deep brown skin had a smooth, warm glow like a polished ornament. Her hair was dyed, a deep red that framed her face in soft curls. She wore a green jumpsuit that appeared worn out with dried mud stains here and there. Had this been my house, I would've told her to change clothes before walking in. I don't think mother notice.

The little girl quickly looked my way, blinking, expressionless. She again turned to look at mom who was going on and on about safety. She finally focused her attention on the girl. "Jade, that's your name right?"

"Yes," she simply nodded. "I'd like to meet your parents eventually after the mist clears. They shouldn't be letting you out in this weather. Neither of you should be out."

"It's just mist, mom. It's safe," Ollie said.

"I don't care about the mist," mom glared at him. "I care about some creep using this opportunity to kidnap children. Every year on the news what happens? Someone goes missing, and hey adults too. It's too dangerous. For everyone!"

"Alright, then can we just chill here?" Ollie asked. "Until it clears up?"

"I don't know," my mother said then turned to Jade. "Won't your parents be expecting you?"

"They said come home whenever," she said. "But they both work till late and my grandma is to sick to babysit."

"How late?" My mom asked.

Still looking at my mother, she responded. "11 at night."

"I wouldn't want you to be there alone," mom replied. "just send them our address and tell them they can pick you up from here whenever they want."

Mom said she needed to lay down and nap, that she was tired from all of the running around. She mentioned that after Ollie's guest leaves that he would be getting grounded for a week for scaring the crap out of her. I knew there was no way from saving him from that.

Ollie started taking out a puzzle that was underneath the TV stand in the living room. I took my time standing up and gestured him to the kitchen. He told Jade he would be right back.

"Yeah?" He said.

I sat down on one of the seats at the table. "Please don't ever scare me like that again." I said. "Mom was pissed"

He rolled his eyes. "Come on. You know it's all her fault right? Leaving me home all by myself. I told her I was scared the last few days like something was bothering me or something felt like it was bothering me. I don't know, but she wasn't there for me. I thought maybe she was too worried about you but she started bad habits again. She doesn't care so I don't care."

I shrugged. "Yeah dude, but I do care," I placed the hand on his shoulder and gave him a smile of reassurance. "If you need me, I'm here. Please just for me. Don't scare me."

As soon as I said that, I noticed Jade was staring at me while putting pieces of puzzle together. It was the creepiest thing I've ever seen. There was something off about this girl. Very off. I tried not to think about it too much. I got my things together along with Ollie then went upstairs to my room. I could not wait to be in bed again. In my bed.
