Chapter 6: The Mist

Mom started yelling on the phone, looking around the house, calling for Ollie. I waited for her to return back to the phone. "Mom, you need to come get me so I can help look for him."

"Where the hell could he have gone!"

Mom only cursed when she was drunk or hungover. I hated it. It didn't sound right coming from her mouth. It sounded scary.

"Where were you last night? Was he upset with you?" I asked her. I was angry and tried my best not to yell knowing it would make things worst.

She didn't answer.

"Just get over here please," I said.

After waiting two hours to finally be dismissed from he hospital and saying goodbye to all of my nurses, mom and I headed from the hospital to the house. I never stepped foot out in the mist before until now. A thick blanket covering the streets, engulfing all who were outside which weren't many. Once inside of the car, I couldn't understand how anyone could see through this. Mom drove slow and focused. Same as everyone else on the road for once.

"I don't understand where he could've gone," she hit the stirring wheel. "Has he talked to you?"

I was nervous to let her know what I knew but I had to tell her. "He said he wanted to meet that girl. He texted me at 11am while I was asleep saying he was going to meet her."

"What!" She nearly slid out of her lane.

"Mom...they never met before," I looked at her.

"Of course they met." She shook her head. "What are you talking about? What the fuck are you talking about?"

"Mom, stop cursing at me! If you had been home, none of this would be happening! Why are you drinking again anyways!" I screamed. I couldn't help it. "How are you blaming me? I was the one in the hospital! A sick person. Where were you?"

Mom was breathing heavily. She pinched her forehead, frantically shaking her head. "I don't know why. I've been stressed, okay. I'm weak. I suck, okay?"

I didn't reply. What a sorry and lame excuse to leave Ollie like that. I was so mad I could barely speak. I turned to look out the window, though I couldn't see anything. If anything happened to Ollie, I don't think I would be able to forgive her.

"What else did he say? How does he talk to her if they never met?" She asked.

"I don't know. He said he was going to show me. But mom, in the letters she sent she describes our house...she watches him. That's weird." I said.

"We might need to call the police when we get home," I said. "but they won't be any help. With the mist, they're going to blame it on that stupid suspicion. The mist. They won't ever search today if he did go missing."

I didn't want to think that my brother was missing. I wanted desperately to believe he was hanging out with a nice person. And I was hoping when we get home, he'd be on the couch playing video games or listening to music.

Mom pulled into the driveway, parking horribly. She went around to my side of the car, opening my door. "Here, use the cane," she said, knowing it was still hard for me to walk. I didn't care in that moment. I closed the door, leaving everything in the car. With the cane, I slowly and painfully made my way towards the door. Mom wrapped her arm around my shoulder and stepped along with me.

She let me go to put the key in, but the door was already unlocked. We gasped when we looked inside. I nearly dropped my cane. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
