Chapter 76

A/N That's not exactly how I imagine the dress but it's similar.

Dalila was sitting on her bed at Bofur's house. A small knock echoed through the room. The door slowly opened and Bofur stepped in.

"I thought you might like this dress....for the funeral. It's your Mother's."

"Thank you."  Dalila mumbled. Bofur went to leave but stopped, leaving his hand on the knob.

"I just want you to know I'll always be here for you lass. I just don't want to see you hurt. Ik now I've made mistakes but I thought I was doing what was best for you. Every girl needs a mother." He said with his back still to her.

"Thank you." She whispered. He let out a sigh and left. Dalila picked up the dress and examined it. It was black with a lot of unique details and patterns. One could tell it was made by a skilled seamstress.

Dalila left her room with the dress on.

"There's something you ought to know about that dress." Bofur said.

"What?"

"Your Mother never got the chance to wear it."

"What do you mean?"

"It was sent here a couple weeks ago for her. I recognized the stitching quickly. It was made by the best seamstress in all of Erebor, Darila, Thorin's wife. I believe she is still alive and thinks Anila is still alive. She was letting her know she's okay but is still hiding from Thorin. I don't know why. Thorin will probably notice the stitching as well. If he does, send him to me." Bofur explained. Dalila was in shock and all she could do was nod. The woman who knew her Mother the best, the woman whom she was named after, could possibly still be alive.

She went to the edge of the village to meet Fili. She would be riding with him while Kili would be with Dis and Thorin. Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur would be attending the funeral as well.

Dalila was debating on whether or not to tell Fili about the dress. Did she want to add something else to his plate? She did not want to keep anything from him but this could wait. The funeral came first. Kili came first today. He lost his child and his lover, Dalila would seem selfish if she brought up the dress.

"Are you alright? You seem lost in your thoughts?" Fili asked her.

"I'm fine. Just worried about Kili." She partially lied. She was worried about Kili but she was not fine by no means.

"Me too. I know he's heartbroken. But I also know....you are too. She was your best friend."

"My only friend for a long time."

Throughout the funeral she stayed right by Fili. His arms were wrapped around her the whole time. Fili's eyes were on Kili. Kili was being supported by his Mother. He was clearly devasted. Crying uncontrollably and weak in the knees. Dalila was crying as well but not near as bad. She felt eyes on her, she knew someone was watching her but she didn't know who. She didn't look to see who but just kept her face buried in Fili's chest.

"We need to talk." Someone grabbed Dalila's shoulder roughly. She turned around to see Thorin. His face was unreadable. The funeral had ended and she was about to leave. She thought she had gotten lucky since Thorin had not came to her yet but she was wrong. She only nodded in response.

"Your dress...where'd you get it?" He asked in a voice she had never heard from him. Soft yet firm. Like it came from his heart and it was breaking.

"Bofur said you would ask about it. He told me to send you to him. It was made for my Mother."

Without another word Thorin was off.

"What was that about?" Fili asked her when she returned to his side.

"I'll tell you when we get home." With Fili's help she hoisted herself on the pony behind him. He nodded in response and ushered the pony to go. Dalila laid her cheek on his shoulder and closed her eyes. Her thoughts were swimming and very overwhelming.

"Your dress is beautiful. Where did you get it? I've never seen such exquisite stitching." Fili commented.

"Bofur gave it to me. It was my Mother's."

"It looks beautiful on you. I'm sure she's proud."

"I hope so." Dalila let out a small sigh. She prayed Darila was alive. Not only for Thorin but for her. Darila knew her Mother better than anyone. She could learn personal things about her Mother. She tried to be happy about this but then she thought of Ragna and felt guilty. She shouldn't be happy today. She should be grieving with Kili. She just closed her eyes and leaned on Fili. Tears rolled down her cheek. Most were tears of grief but some were tears of joy and hope.
