Chapter 6
That night they had a feast. Thorin had some friends over. A set of brothers whose names were Bofur and Bombur, and their cousin Bifur. Dalila had met them all but Bofur. She liked his funny hat.
After they ate they all gathered in the living room around the fire. They sang songs and danced. Dalila's favorite song was one Bofur sang about an inn and the man in the moon. It was a great tune but it made her sad too for reasons she didn't know. Apparently they noticed her sadness.
"What's wrong lass?" Bombur asked her. She shrugged.
"Dalila are you alright?" Fili asked her concerned. She pulled her knees to her chest.
"I'm fine." She said.
"Oh come on now, we're all friends. Tell us what's the matter." Bofur said kneeling beside her.
"Well...your song. It's my favorite. But it made me sad." She admitted.
"Why would a song like that make you sad?" He asked. He thought of all the words and nothing about it was sad.
"I don't know. I-I-I I want my Daddy." Tears slid down her cheeks. She'd been keeping this in for so long and now she couldn't any longer. Bofur didn't know what to say or do. So he did what anyone else would do, he hugged her.
"Your father would be so proud of you and the little lady you've become." He stroked her hair.
"How do you know?"
"I was good friends with him. You were the best thing that ever happened to him. He loved you so much. He still does. And if he were here now he'd tell you to stop your crying and smile. You're too pretty to cry."
"Thank you Bofur." She smiled.
"No problem lassie."
"Does my Mommy and Daddy know I love them?"
"Of course they do. They're watching over you. I promise you that." He assured her.
"Anytime you want to hear a story about your father ask me. I have plenty." Bombur said.
"Tell me one please!" Dalila said excitedly. She'd never heard a story about her father before. She didn't even know his name.
"One time we went to a river together. None of us could swim very well. The plan was just to fish. But your father could never stick to a plan. That day there happened to be geese at the pond. One goose in particular had a nest with three eggs in it. That old goose was meaner than a snake. Your father said he could handle the goose and he could even train the goose. After so long I was tired of hearing it. I told him if that's so then go bring me an egg out from under it. He wasn't about to be embarrassed. He quietly snuck up on it. He lifted it up and threw it and snatched an egg and ran. He ran faster than a warg. But the goose was faster. It bit the back of his trousers and wouldn't let go. He ran through Erebor with a goose on his tail." Bombur laughed.
"But he got the egg." Bofur pointed out.
"Yes he got the egg but he ruined his underwear." Bombur said. Dalila laughed.
"Can I ask a question about him?" She asked them.
"What is it my dear?" Bofur asked.
"What was his name? No one ever told me."
"Uh..James."
"Charles."
"Bilin." Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur all three shouted a different name at the same time. Dalila looked at them confused.
"Your father had a lot of different names." Bofur explained.
"Including half-wit." Thorin mumbled.
Dalila knew the dwarves were keeping his name from her. She was only 4 but she wasn't stupid. She didn't understand why. She had a right to know. Didn't she??
