Chapter 45

"Hello friend." Astrid said as she flew in his window.
"Astrid! It's good to see you. I was hoping you'd come by sometime. I need a favor." The man came to the window.
"What do you want Bofur?"
"I found my wife's ring. Can you take it to Dalila?"
"Of course. This is a very pretty ring. Is there a story behind it? Why's it shaped like a crown?"
"Of course there's a story Lassie! Come in! I'll give you food and tell you!"

Astrid gladly obliged. Bofur gave her some grain.
"This ring has been in Dalila's family for generations. Anila's father gave it to her and his mother's father gave it to her and so on. Dalila's great-great-great-great grandfather made it. Everything it was made from came from the mines of Erebor. He made it for his daughter. It meant that to him she will always be a princess. That she was his princess. And that she was just as good as a princess. Since then every father has given it to their daughter. Anila was so excited to pass it on to Dalila. I was heart broken when I couldn't find it. But I found it last night and I want her to have it. I think she needs it now. Can you take it to her?"
"Better idea, you take it to her."
"Oh no. I've never been to Mirkwood."
"Come see your daughter. She needs you. She's going through a hard time. And the tradition is the father gives it to his daughter, not the birds gives it to the daughter."
"I suppose you're right. I'll pack my things and stay a couple days."

Meanwhile the Arkin brother were going to visit their dear ole uncle.
"Uncle, we need to have a word." Fili said walking in the house.
"May I ask what about?" Thorin answered.
"About this." Fili put the letter and invitation on the table in front of Thorin.
"Where did you get these?" Thorin asked.
"That's not important. What's important is why you wrote these?"
"Why do you think I did it? Someone else could've wrote these?"
"Who else would? Why would the elves care who I marry? You've been against me and Dalila from the start."
"Yes I wrote them. So what?"
"So what? Dalila saw them! She's upset! She probably hates me! She might not believe me when I tell her you did it!"
"Well I didn't write them to please her."
"You enjoy seeing me suffer don't you?"
"No. I'm doing this to see you happy! Don't accuse me of anything else!"
"I can't be happy without her! What don't you understand about that?!"
"I understand there's a possibility you can't have your own children! I understand the orcs take a keen interest in her and won't stop until she's dead! I understand they aimed for her stomach but I don't think ending the Durin line was the only reason! I understand I am king and what I say goes!" Thorin said standing up from the chair.
"If you're that kind of king then you're no longer my king. I'm leaving the Blue Mountains. Kili can have the stupid throne." Fili walked out with Kili behind him.
"Fili wait." Dís called. But he kept walking.
"Thorin go after him." Dís begged.
"No. He's made his choice."

"I think I need to refresh your memory." Dís said standing in front of him.
"About what?"
"About when you were his age. She was in the backyard, they say it was a little past nine. When her prince rode up on a white horse." She poked his chest.
"Dís don't go there."
"Her folks shoulda seen it coming, it was only just a matter of time. Plenty old enough and you can't stop love.
She stuck a note on the screen door it said "sorry but I got to go." That was all she wrote, her mama's heart was broke. That was all she wrote, so the story goes. Her daddy was in the kitchen, starin' out the window. Scratchin' and a rackin' his brains.
How could 38 years just up and walk away. Their little pony-tailed girl grown up to be a woman. Now she's gone in the blink of an eye. She left the suds in the bucket and the clothes hangin' out on the line. You can only imagine what the servants were talking about that next day. Nothin' quite like this had happened there before.Well you must have been a looker, smooth talkin' son of a gun, for such a grounded girl to just up and run. Course you can't fence time and you can't stop love. Now all the biddy's in the beauty shop gossip goin' non-stop, sippin' on pink lemonade. She had her pretty little bare feet hangin' off the side of your horse. And they were headed to Ironhill. Does that ring a bell? The day you ran away and married Darila? Atleast Fili listened to you and is waiting till he's of proper age. When father told you no you just jumped up and ran. You have to respect Fili. He's handling this situation better than you did."
"Are you done?" Thorin groaned.
"Are you done being a jerk?"
"I'm not a jerk!"
"Then stop acting like one."
