Chapter 35
The company marched for days. Finally, they could see Gundabad.
"Come on! We have to hurry!" Fili said running.
"Wait! We can't just stroll in there and knock on the door like we're there for a cup of tea. We need a plan." Thorin said.
"The plan is to smash their heads in." Bofur said.
"You two are second in command. Start acting like it. The plan is to sneak along the edge and then go in through the back." Thorin said.
"Fair enough. Come on!" Fili said again. The dwarves followed him.
Inside the orcs just let Dalila down to eat. She had many bruises from beatings and was very weak. She ate slowly. Her portions grew smaller everyday. The reason is because Azog had her a dress made and he wanted to make sure she'd fit in it. But she didn't know that. She thought they were just being cruel.
After awhile she heard some noise going on upstairs. She went to the bars and listened closely. She heard a yell. She recognized the voice. It was Fili. He was yelling at the other dwarves to find her.
"Fili! Fili! I'm down here!" She yelled desperately. She smiled for the first time in days.
Fili heard her.
"Dalila!" He fought off the orcs and ran towards her voice. But he was stopped by a group of orcs. The battle was fierce. One cut off a strand of his hair from behind and ran off with it. He paid no attention to it.
The orc ran down to Dalila.
"Here's what's left of your precious prince." The orc spat and threw the hair in. Dalila was shocked.
"No. No. No. He can't be. He can't be dead." She grabbed the hair and sobbed. This was all her fault. The orc laughed at her and unlocked her door.
"Why'd you do that?" She asked him.
"Our master requested me to lead you away." The orc said grabbing her. She didn't even fight him. She didn't care if she was going to die. She wanted to.
Kili heard the noise. He ran down the stairs. He saw the orc leading Dalila. He ran toward them and cut off the orcs head.
"Dalila are you okay?" He asked her.
"Yes. Yes." She cried.
"It's okay. We're here now. You're safe." He said and hugged her. He didn't notice the hair in her hand.
"I'm going to guard the door. Stay here. Holler if you need me" Kili ran off. The door was just in front of them so Dalila wasn't alone.
Dalila saw the dead orcs dagger in his belt. She grabbed it.
"If he's dead I want to die to." She raised the dagger and was fixing to stab herself in the heart. Thankfully, Kili turned around to check on her. He ran to her and tackled her. He grabbed the dagger.
"What in Mahal's name are you doing?!" He asked her confused. Why would she kill herself? They were here to save her!
"He's dead Kili. Fili is dead." She showed him the hair. The hair now had blood on it from the orc. But Kili thought it was Fili's. He didn't see his brother fall but maybe he did. The orc had to get the hair somewhere.
Kili was in shock he didn't know what to do.
"If this is true, the only way I can honor my brother is doing what he would want and he'd want you to live."
"But I can't live without him Kili. Even if I'm alive I won't be alive." She begged him.
"I'm not letting you take your life. The battle is over. I don't hear anything." He took her hand.
"No. I'm not going anywhere. Bury me here with Fili."
"No way am I burying my brother in Gundabad. I'll carry him home myself if I must." Kili helped her up.
"Why would you carry me home?" A voice said from behind. They turned to face it. Fili was standing in the door.
"Fili! You're alive!" Dalila tried to run to him but she fell. She was to weak. Fili rushed to help her.
"Dalila, are you alright? What did they do to you?"
"I'm okay Fili." Fili picked her up.
"Now, why are you carrying me home? You can. I am tired and I won't protest." Fili asked Kili.
"An orc brought Dalila a piece of hair with blood on it. We thought you were dead." Kili explained.
"So that's why that nasty creature cut my hair and ran." Fili finally understood.
"I'm glad you're alive. I really wasn't in the mood to carry you. You weigh as much as Smuag." Kili smirked.
"I'm in shape. I have abs. You have flab." Fili said.
"I do not have flab! I just have a small layer of skin covering my abs! Just because mine aren't as toned as yours means nothing except you work out a little more!" Kili defended himself.
"Maybe you should workout with me.'' Fili offered.
"You only worked out for one reason. And you're carrying her."
"Shut up." Fili glared at him.
"Don't worry, she's asleep." Kili nodded towards her. Fili sighed in relief.
"I have to stay in shape until I'm 80."
"Why 80?"
"Because that's when we're getting married. She can't leave me for my looks when we're married."
"Brother, after what I just saw, she's never going to leave you." Kili said seriously.
"What are you talking about?"
"She tried to kill herself. And she would have if I didn't stop her. I went to stand guard at the door and I turned around to check on her and she had a dagger pointed at her heart."
"Why would she do that?"
"Same reason you tried to. She loves you."
"I'm going to have to talk to her about that. She can't do that." Fili sighed.
"I don't know what it is about you two and killing yourself, but I'm sick of it. I'm always the one to stop you."
"Thank you."
"It's my pleasure. Just don't do it again."
"I don't plan on it."
"Dalila!" Bofur said when he saw them. The company crowded around her.
"Give her air. Oin, look after her." Thorin commanded. Everyone did as she said. Oin checked her. He touched her stomach and she winced. He cut her dress and revealed her stomach. It was covered in bruises. Everyone's face dropped.
"She's alive. And she'll be okay. But she's going to need a lot of looking after. She hasn't been fed properly. She's very weak because of that and beatings. She's lost a lot of weight." He explained. Fili gently picked her up again.
"Let's get her home."
