Chapter 28
"It's almost your birthday. What do you want?" Fili asked Dalila. They were at their place by the pond.
"I just want to be with you."
"Well that's easy enough. But I'm still getting you something."
"Nothing big."
"Fine. I'll spoil you soon enough."
"I don't want to be spoiled."
"Then I'll.....pamper you."
"All I ask of you is for you to love me forever."
"You don't have to ask. Even if you didn't want me to I would anyway. You don't really have a choice on that."
"Fili, I think me and you are going to have a good life together."
"As long as we have each other."
"There is one thing I want for my birthday." Dalila said later.
"What?"
"I want to dance with you."
"We can have a ball like we did for Kili. Then we can dance all night."
"No. I want to dance here. Just you and me."
"I thought you liked parties and there's no music love."
"I do, I love them. I love it when we're at a party in the crowded ball room. But I can't hear you call me Lassie or Love with the music loud and everyone talking. Ale, red wine, good times, no I don't mind being with everyone else. I absolutely love it! But then there's nights like tonight that I want you to myself. And here is perfect. There's no light but the lights the fireflies make. I love the way you look in a firefly glow. Tonight let's say everything without making a sound, a cricket choir in the background, underneath a harvest moon. Standing on your shoes in my bare feet, dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat." Dalila put her arms around his neck.
"You want to dance to the rhythm of my heartbeat?" Fili asked confused.
"Yes! And I wanna feel it like a kick drum, beating faster in your chest.
I wanna feel you holding onto me and make me hold my breath. You pull me closer, my head on your shoulder. We won't need a song. We'll make a fallen star wish, one more slow kiss, what are we waiting on?"
"I'm not waiting anymore. I waited 30 years." Fili kissed her. It was a slow passionate kiss. Dalila stood on his feet and they danced.
They danced almost all night to the rhythm of each others heartbeat. The only sounds that could be heard was the crickets chirping, the frogs croaking, and the slow steps of the two lovers.
Kili was worried about them. They'd been gone all day and almost all night. He went to look for them. The first place he looked was the pond. He started walking up the hill and he saw them. He stopped instantly. He didn't want to disturb them so he went back home.
At the Durin house, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur were having dinner with Thorin and Dís.
"Did you find them?" Dís asked him.
"Yes. They're having a moment at the pond." Kili explained.
"A moment?! He's messing around with my daughter." Bofur burst out the door.
"No! No! Not that kind of moment." Kili tried to explain but it was too late. Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur were already heading towards the pond.
"Come on. Let's go stop the hanging." Thorin said grabbing his cloak.
Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur stopped when they saw the two dancing the night away.
"It's official. She's growing up." Bofur said sadly. Bifur said something in his gibberish language and punched his left hand with his right fist.
"No. We can't beat him, yet. They're just dancing...closely." Bofur answered him.
"You have nothing to worry about with Fili. Now if it was Kili on the other hand..." Thorin said.
"I know. If the younger brother was her one there would only be one Arkin brother left." Bofur glared at Kili.
"I'm hurt Bofur. I really am. I thought you'd love to have me as a son-in-law." Kili smirked.
"No."
Meanwhile, by the pond Dalila and Fili heard everything.
"Just keep dancing and don't look at them and maybe they'll go away." Fili whispered in her ear. Dalila held back a laugh.
