Chapter 26

A few days later at the Durin house Dalila was having dinner with them.
"So Uncle, since we're not courting yet, what do we do? Like when you're courting you put in a courting braid. Do you do something like that when you're promised?" Fili asked Thorin.
"Yes. You put in two small braids. You use her family beards and she uses your family beads, just like you do in a courting or marriage braid." Thorin explained.
"Dalila, will you braid my hair later?" Fili asked her.
"It'd be my pleasure. But only if you'll braid mine."
"Of course.

-that night-

Dalila and Fili went to their pond and sat under the tree.
"Where should we put your braids?" Dalila pondered.
"Wherever you want love." Fili told her.
"I got it! Can I braid your beard? Like put a braid down each side of your mouth?"
"That'd be great actually. It's always in the way."

Dalila braided his hair and slipped on some beads her father made.
"I like it." She said.
"I'm sure I will too. Now, we have to find a place for your braids."
"Anywhere."
"How about one on each side then they meet in the back and form a crown?"
"That sounds lovely."

Fili braided her hair and then put the beads he made for her in.
"You look beautiful lassie."
"I can't believe this is happening. We just started our lives together."
"We just started and it's already amazing. Imagine what the future holds for us!"
"I know. I think about our future together too. But we can't plan anything for another couple decades so let's just live in the now. Enjoy the moment."
"You're right. I don't want this moment to end."
"I don't either."

About that time Kili came and sat between them. They were sitting really close so he had to push them apart.
"But all good things must come to an end. What do you want Kili?" Fili sighed.
"Mother wanted me to ask Dalila if she wanted to go to the market with her later. She needs material and groceries."
"Sure. When is she leaving?" Dalila asked.
"In a couple hours."
"And you just had to come tell her now?" Fili asked irritated.
"Yeah. I like the braids by the way brother. It's a good look for you."
"Thanks. Go home. We'll be there in a bit."
"Fine. But remember, Mahal is watching. Don't do anything that would hurt his eyes." Kili smirked.
"Bye Kili." Fili rolled his eyes.
"Someone's got an attitude." Kili stood up and went home.

"I remember when Kili was a baby he was so sweet. What happened?" Dalila chuckled.
"He hit the terrible twos and never grew out of it."

Dalila and Dís went to the market together.
"It's been so lovely to see Fili so happy." Dís told her as she picked out good apples.
"It's been lovely being with him. I missed you all so much the past 30 years."
"It was dreadful without you. Don't tell Fili I'm telling you this but the day you left he cried himself to sleep. He did for quite sometime. He didn't make any friends for over a year! He missed you. But when Kili grew older he pulled him out into the world but he still wasn't himself. But that night when he saw you, everything changed. The real Fili came out."
"I'm can't believe he missed me that much."
"It was really hard on Thorin. He didn't want to send you off. But he felt he had to for the sake of his nephew. Now he realizes his mistake. But maybe it's a good thing you left. It grew yours and Fili's bond. You know it's true because the feelings lasted that long even when you didn't see each other."
"I suppose you're right."

"Here's the material I'm looking for." Dís picked out her material and had the worker cut it for her. The material was babyish. One had rubber ducks on it. And others had little animals or other baby things. Dalila was confused. Why would Dís be buying this? Maybe a relative or friend had a baby.
"Why are you buying this material?" Dalila asked her curiously.
"I get bored and make things. I've grown tired of making things for grown dwarfs. And I miss making cute things for Fili and Kili. I thought I'd just make some for fun." She half way lied. She did miss making cute things for Fili and Kili but that's not why she bought the material. She hoped Dalila and Fili would have a baby soon. She missed a baby in the house and wanted grandchildren. But Dalila believed her.
"Ok. Did I tell you I found some of my old baby clothes? Bofur saved everything!"
"No you didn't tell me. One day I'll come over and look at them. Some might need mending."
