41 | Baby Fever
Nicole
"Are you sure you don't need help?"
"Yeah. I'm sure." I replied to Lucas while I was finishing getting dressed.
Lucas called the hospital last night to book an appointment for me and the doctor agreed on seeing me today at eleven thirty. And thank God she could squeeze me in on her tight schedule because I was a wreck. And I felt like a wreck, which was the worst part. The night wasn't that terrible but I woke up at six in the morning to throw up again, and I was honestly getting too tired from this constant gut wrenching feeling.
"You sure?" He double checked with me again.
"When it comes to clothes you can only help me by undressing me and we don't have the time for that right now. Nor do I have the spirit for it." I said as I adjusted my pink sweater.
One thing I really love to do is getting dressed, picking my outfits and doing my makeup, but today I wasn't feeling up for it. Instead, I just threw on a sweater, some old blue jeans and my comfortable white converse and that was enough for me to be ready to walk out the door.
Lucas chuckled softly at my witty response and led the way as we said goodbye to Sparkles, left the house and got in our seats. He was driving, obviously.
A good fifteen minutes later, we arrived at the hospital and sat in the waiting room. Thankfully not too longer after, the doctor's assistant called me in and I got up from my seat, hand in hand with Lucas.
"I thought I couldn't come with you inside the doctor's office."
"Hey, it's my right as a patient to have someone come with me." He didn't argue with me and we both walked inside the doctor's office, and sat on the two seats behind the doctor's desk after she shook our hands.
I hated going alone into the doctor's office. It sounds really childish, I know, but I prefer to have someone go with me. Plus, it literally is my right.
"Hi, Nicole. How are you?" My doctor asked as she got up and stretched her arm to shake my hand.
"Not so good. Otherwise I would rather not see you until my next routine appointment." She looked amused at my response and nodded in agreement before sitting back down on her seat.
"Trust me, I would rather not see you or any of my patients until then. But emergencies happen." She shrugged her shoulders before flashing me another warm smile.
It must be so weird to be a doctor when your job literally relies on other people's lack of well being. I assume you become a doctor because you want to help people, and therefore, you don't want to see them but unless you do, you don't make any money. Crazy.
"So, you wanna tell me what's been going on?"
"I have been feeling miserable lately. I had a fever yesterday, I can't keep anything down, I throw up constantly."
"When did it start?"
"Uh..." I searched my tired brain for the day. "Yesterday. I woke up feeling terrible but now that I think about it, I wasn't feeling too good when I went to bed that previous night."
She nodded as she typed what I assumed were all my symptoms on the computer in front of her.
"Okay. Have you done anything for the fever?" With her glasses resting on the edge of her nose, she eyed me.
"I took a paracetamol, I got some rest, I drank water. I don't think I have it now." At my response, she picked up a thermometer and checked my temperature.
"Yeah, you're all good now."
I sighed in relief. At least one of my sources of my state of miserableness is gone.
"What have you been eating?"
"Since yesterday nothing but plain food. Toast, tea, crackers, chicken soup."
"That's good, keep it up." She said while she kept typing. "Anyone else in the house that's also sick?" Her eyes wandered to Lucas now and he nodded in denial.
When she was done typing she told me to lay down on the bed she had in the corner of the room, asked me to lift my sweater and started her observation. She felt my stomach, listened to it with the stethoscope, felt my appendix and did the appendix test and eventually told me to go back to my seat.
"Alright Nicole, all of this indicates it's food poisoning but the fever is what's making me suspicious. Usually fevers indicate there's an infection, so we need to do some blood work to confirm or deny that."
"Okay."
"I don't want you to get too worried, some situations of food poisoning also cause fevers. Did you eat anything that could be bad or under cooked the couple of days before yesterday?"
"No, we ate at home. I only went out for coffee and doughnuts, but those seemed good to me."
She nodded in understanding and printed some papers that she handed me afterwards.
"Take these to the front desk, they'll know what to do." She printed a couple more and gave them to me too. "These are the prescriptions for some medicine that will help you with the nausea and throwing up, it'll help you keep the food down."
"Oh, thank you so much doctor." I let out a sigh of relief and smiled at her.
"Do the blood work now, wait outside for the results and then I'll call you in again. If there's an infection you'll have to start an antibiotic today."
I nodded in agreement, thanked her once more and left the room with Lucas by my side.
I handed the papers to the woman behind the front desk, who couldn't be more than forty years old, with shoulder length brown hair. We sat in the waiting room afterwards and waited.
"Why is your leg bouncing?" Lucas asked me, and I shot a look at him from the side.
"I'm not the biggest fan of needles."
"Oh." He said in realization before pressing his palm against my bouncing leg. "I don't love needles either but you don't really have a choice here."
"Thanks for reminding me." I shot back, sarcasm taking over me in a time of stress, like usual.
I knew he was just trying to make me feel better, like he always does, so I simply let my head fall on his shoulder while my fingers stroked his hand that was still resting on my thigh.
I could procrastinate all I wanted, but that needle was still sticking me.
A magazine with Mark Wahlberg on the cover caught my attention. I picked it up from the small table next to the chairs in the waiting room and flipped the pages with my fingertips, reading what was up in the small little world of Hollywood, saw who was cancelled and who was the newest addiction to the flashes of the cameras.
The gossip kept me company until a nurse called my name and walked with me to the analysis room where they were going to get a blood sample from me.
It was a pretty quick procedure but it sure hurt like hell. I closed my eyes shut while the professionals did their thing and before I knew it they were putting a bandaid on the inside of the joint in my arm and it was safe for me to open my eyes again.
I let out a sigh of relief and politely thanked them before making me way back to Lucas' side.
We were supposed to wait for the results, which wouldn't take less than two hours to be ready, so Lucas and I decided to go to the hospital cafeteria and get some food in our stomachs. Well, in Lucas' stomach only. I prefered to go on a hunger strike instead of throwing up in public.
Two hours later Lucas had eaten his lunch, I had read another magazine and was currently scolding myself mentally for not bringing my laptop with me. At least with all this time I could be working on my future projects.
I had some ideas. I always have ideas if I'm being honest. As a writer, my brain tends to create stories and plots out of the blue. Of course, not all of them work, but I can only tell if they do or not once I start writing them. Which is something I could be doing with my time instead of just reading gossip. I don't think I've read this many trashy magazines since I was fourteen and was collecting Backstreet Boys posters to hang on my walls.
"Miss Nicole Meyers?"
I looked up at the woman that stood next to us.
Lucas stood up and I did the same, we followed the doctor's assistant back to the doctor's office and sat down on the same seats we sat on in the morning.
"How are you feeling now, Nicole?" My doctor asked with a smile on her face while she skimmed her fingers through the pages of the lab results.
"A bit nauseous. My stomach feels like it's rippled."
She pursed her lips into a tight line and nodded in understanding. "Yeah, and I know why now."
I said nothing in return, wanting her to elaborate on her line of thought.
"I'm guessing you probably didn't know this already but... Congratulations! You're pregnant." She smiled widely as she delivered the very unexpected news.
What?
"What?" I asked out loud.
"That fever threw me off a little, I immediately discarded this option." The doctor explained as she looked at both me and Lucas.
From the corner of my eye I could see Lucas' lips curling upwards into a smile. I turned my head to look at him and we both smiled at each other, our eyes saying more than we could ever voice out.
"Are you sure?" I asked the doctor as I sat up in my chair, leaning forward towards the desk.
"Positive. But we'll do a sonogram to make sure. Do you have any idea how far along you are?"
I thought about the last time Lucas and I had sex. Then I thought it probably was for the best to just shrug my shoulders instead of telling my doctor that we'd been having sex basically every day, some days even more than once. Not to mention the whole sex fest in Lake Tahoe.
"I don't know." I replied.
"Have you been late?"
"I... I don't know. Thinking back now, I probably missed a few periods. I have been extremely busy lately with work, I didn't really pay attention."
"Alright. That's okay, we'll do a sonogram and figure it all out."
The doctor got up from her seat and walked out the door.
Both Lucas and I stood still in our seats, silent and just looking at each other. I could tell he was excited about the news but as shocked as I was. His fingers kept softly grazing against my sweaty palms.
I was able to hear the doctor talking to someone else. "Can you prepare the ultrasound room?"
Not too long afterwards, the same woman that told us to go inside the doctor's office walked us through the hallway to go to the room where I was getting the exam done.
I laid on the exam bed and rolled up my sweater, making my stomach visible. Lucas stood next to me, holding my hand in his while he shot me a reassuring smile. The doctor set everything up and applied the gel on the head of the wand shaped device before the cold substance hit my skin. I felt myself getting goosebumps at the contrast of the warm skin and the cold gel.
"This the confirmation we needed." The doctor said, a little more to herself than to us, her voice low.
She then turned the screen towards my direction and I looked up at the black and white sight before me.
"This is your baby." My heart almost stopped beating. "Right there." Her index finger tapped the screen on the small dot that she called my baby.
In that moment, the world stopped turning for me. The universe got to a halt.
The light buzzing sound of the air conditioner of the room stopped. The once cold feeling of the gel was now warm and almost numbing. The flourescent lights of the room that hurt my eyes when I walked in were now making my eyes blurry. My breath got caught in my throat. My heart did stop beating.
"That is the gestational sac and that little white dot you see is your baby."
I heard Lucas gasp behind my ear, where he stood on my side and felt his fingers squeeze my hand.
"Wow." He said in a low whisper. "So tiny."
For the first time in what felt like forever, I averted my gaze from the black and white screen and tilted my head to the other side and let my brown eyes meet Lucas' blue ones.
The way we looked at each other said it all.
"I'll print you some pictures to take home with you."
The perky voice of the doctor interrupted our wordless conversation and we were both forced to look at her now.
"We'd love that. Thank you." Lucas said, his voice sounding a little shaky.
She smiled at us before going ahead and choosing some images to print and hand us in the end.
Mine and Lucas' eyes met again, and the vision of his clear blue orbits was now blurry to me. But I could still see the glint in his eyes, telling me all that I needed to know now.
We were officially becoming a family, and everything is going to be okay.
