Her voice sounded music to his ears. Her face with that alluring smile was like a cherry on top. His heart eased to see her euphoria whilst they were in the middle of celebration.
Surely, his adulation for her was mystifying his mind.
He knew that letting her go would be the most toughest thing for him to do.
It felt almost the same.
Just like the time when his 'Little Sahay' or now he would say 'Amrita' had left him without any notice, years ago.
He was very happy... and desperate to tell her.
"Hi." She beamed at him.
"I'm sorry, I'm late." He was panting hard and she giggled at his breezy tone.
"It's okay, now can we play?" She asked him, getting up from the bench.
"Yes, but I want to tell you something." He grinned. "Okay, tell me." She immediately threw the ball in his hand.
"I'm having a plastic surgery tomorrow." He said and she gaped at him like he said something very odd.
"Eww, don't grow plastic." She scrunched her nose, earning a chuckle from him, "I like you this way only." She said further and he couldn't help but smile at that comment.
"No... Little Sahay... This burnt mark won't be there on my face after it. I'll be like I used to look before." He explained and she tried to sink his words in her little brain.
"But you'll still be my friend after that, won't you?" She asked him appearing unfazed about his looks and that made him like her more.
Because she didn't care how his face was or what the others had their opinion about him and his ugly burnt face. Only the thing which mattered to her was their friendship.
"Yes definitely. You'll always be my friend. No matter what." He nodded and passed her the ball.
Indeed his surgery was successful and he did go to that park again after he returned from the hospital but he didn't see her ever since he got healed. She had disappeared like a thin air without letting him know. He visited the park everyday without any fail for the next few months but like always she didn't show up. It had impacted him deeply because she was his only friend and losing her just shattered his heart. This had turned him into a complete loner without any friend.
And with Ambar, those memories rushed back to him but this time the only difference was that despite of knowing everything about her going away, he couldn't stop her.
He was going to lose another friend again but he couldn't do anything to make her stay.
"Hey! Why are you quiet?" She asked him while everyone had already left.
"No.. Just work stress." He lied and she huffed, "You're the worst sort of workaholic, I've ever seen." She rolled her eyes and saw him smile which definitely didn't reach his eyes..
"So, your flight is leaving at six, tomorrow evening, isn't it?" He asked her and she bobbed her head.
"You would come to the airport, won't you?" She asked, hoping that he would say yes but he didn't.
"No... I hate departures so I won't come to the airport." He told her.
"Oh, I see." She maintained a calm face at his response.
She was really disappointed with the fact that she wasn't going to see him there.
However, she composed herself, "Tomorrow morning, I'll be taking Dida for check up, Is it fine if you look after Aakash for some time?" She queried in a mild voice.
"Yes, sure."
"Thank you and good night, Nakul." She wished him and walked towards her room.
"Good night, Ambar." He spoke a little late because she was already gone without hearing him.
------------------------------------------------
He felt a tap on his chin... which made him to open his eyes...
"Chachu?" It was none other than his small shot who was constantly staring at him with a huge smile.
"Aakash! What are you doing here?" He rubbed his eyes.
"How much will you sleep more? I'm bored." Aakash said irritatingly and Nakul's eyes immediately darted to the clock on the table.
"Oh my god! I really did sleep a lot." He mumbled disbelieving the reality as he was always a light sleeper.
Aakash laughed at his comportment, "Dadda just slept after Amrita maa gave him medicines." Aakash said and Nakul sighed. "Okay! And where's Ambar?"
"Amy just left with Amrita maa but she told me to wake you up... so here I am." Aakash grinned at him.
Nakul pulled him on his lap and tickled him playfully as they burst out laughing.
"So, you had your breakfast?" Nakul asked.
"Yes... Yes... Yes... How many questions will you ask?" Aakash groaned in annoyance.
"What to do? Though I'm not entirely like you but still I have some of your qualities in me." He mocked the little boy who chuckled slightly. "Come help me with the breakfast." Nakul picked him in his arms.
"Okay but only on one condition." Aakash said and Nakul narrowed his eyes in confusion.
"Take me to Rahul's house. I want to meet him and return his comic book." The little boy requested with those cute little pleading eyes.
"Fine but first let me eat in peace and then we can go wherever you want." He replied and Aakash grinned like a winner.
"Aakash! Where are we really going?" Nakul queried on their way to his friend's house.
"Rahul's place, didn't I tell you?" Aakash replied and Nakul smiled slyly, "My small shot is turning like his dad."
Aakash pouted, "Isn't it a good thing? I really want to be like him." He said truthfully.
"Yes... You'll be like him, one day." Nakul replied.
"Stop." All of a sudden, Aakash shouted and the car abruptly came to a halt.
"Did we reach?"
"Yes." Aakash instantly hopped out of the car whilst Nakul followed him.
He ran up the stairs and stopped by a door before turning to Nakul.
"Be nice." He gritted and Nakul laughed, "You're treating me like a kid now." Aakash just glared at him and he zipped his mouth, afraid of the little boy's outburst.
No wonder, Aakash and Ambar were carbon copy of each other.
Aakash jumped high to reach the doorbell but failed. Nakul smiled at his attempts and in no time, he lifted Aakash in his arms.
"Thank you chachu." Aakash smiled and stroked the bell twice.
In just few minutes, the door was opened by a small kid.
"Hey Aakash!" The boy's eyes lit up.
"Hi Rahul." Aakash replied cheerfully and turned his head to Nakul who was still holding him in his arms.
"Chachu... Put me down." He ordered and Nakul did as he was told.
"I came here to return this comic book... I really enjoyed it. Thank you..." Aakash was very polite to him as he handed him the book.
"It's my pleasure, Aakash." Rahul replied.
"Can we play for some time?" Aakash queried.
"Sure but I have to wait for Rachana di. She's at Amy's house." Rahul said.
"Amy's house?" Nakul's eyes furrowed.
How could this be her house? She lived with her uncle earlier, didn't she?
"Yes, that's next door." Aakash said, pointing him.
"I never knew Ambar stayed here." He was shocked and perplexed.
"Last time, I came here with her only." Aakash told him and Nakul stepped ahead to see the door of her house ajar.
He slightly knocked it.
A lady opened the door with a broomstick in one hand.
"Yes?" The woman enquired.
"I..." Nakul fumbled as he wasn't able to introduce himself.
Meanwhile Rachana's eyes shifted to Aakash and her smile widened, seeing the little boy flashing his milk teeth.
"Hello Rachana Auntie." He greeted her.
"Hello Aakash."
"He's my uncle... I came here to return this comic book to Rahul." Aakash blew away her doubt while Nakul stood like a male mannequin in front of her.
"Hello! Then you must be Ambar's boss, right?" She asked.
"I'm her friend too." He replied and she smiled at him.
"Yes, of course... She talks about you whenever she comes here." She spoke while Nakul moved forward, observing the tiny place which belonged to his friend.
The house was nothing luxurious and it didn't even appear to be the size of his own room. It was also a way too small but indeed was beautifully decorated and cleaned.
The bed was neatly arranged and the wall was filled with photographs.
Suddenly, he stilled.
"I'm sorry... I just finished cleaning... I've promised Ambar to keep her house clean in her absence.... It's sad that we didn't get that much of time to catch up... and now she's leaving..." Rachana kept on talking but Nakul's eyes were fixed on that single portrait which was hung on the wall, above the bed.
Shiver ran down his spine and he felt goosebumps erupting all over his skin.
Rachana inched to where his eyes were already hooked to.
"Oh that's Ambar with her parents. She likes that picture a lot, she had mentioned that this picture was taken on her last birthday which she celebrated with her parents." Rachana uttered and once again, the air knocked out of his system, leaving him totally stupefied and baffled.
-----------------------------------------------
"Amrita, The baby is absolutely fine and here is your sonography report." The doctor told her, giving her the report.
"Thank you, Vishakha." Amrita smiled gratefully and glanced at Ambar who was a lot more thrilled than her.
"It's my job, doctor." She winked at her.
"Yeah." Amrita let out a laugh.
"Just have a lot of fluids and don't take any sort of stress, it's not good for the foetus."
"Okay!" Amrita rose from her seat.
"I'll let Dr. Tripathi know. She's quite frantic about you." The doctor laughed.
"She'll be. It would be a surprise if she wouldn't." Amrita giggled.
"Yes... She's very motherly and Dr. Amrita, this is the chart for you to follow. You have to rest a lot.." She took the file from her hand, "Okay! Thank you and see you soon.." She pushed the door.
"Thanks, Dr. Vishakha." Ambar said before following her sister out..
"Let's go. We have only five hours left." Amrita eyed her wrist watch and Ambar nodded whilst getting in the car.
Once they reached the mansion, they saw Mrs. Melanie in the hallway.
"Hey, where's everyone?" Ambar asked.
"Mayank sir is in his room. Nakul sir and Aakash left to meet some..." Before she could complete, Aakash ran up to her, "Amy!"
"Hey kiddo! Where were you?" Ambar asked him.
"With Rahul." He said and Ambar grinned, "Somebody had a lot of fun."
"Yes." He nodded with enthusiasm.
"I'll keep the reports and check Mr. Mayank." Amrita said and sprinted towards the staircase.
"Who took you there by the way?" Ambar turned to him once she had left.
"Chachu, Ofcourse."
"Where is he?" Ambar couldn't keep desperation out of her voice.
"I don't know... he dropped me here and left." Aakash spoke and Ambar let out a huge breath.
'I shouldn't think about him. He doesn't have feelings for me.' She kept on reminding herself.
She held his hand, "Let's get you cleaned and then we'll leave for the airport."
------------------------------------------------
They were about to leave and still there were no signs of him.
Where did he go?
"His mobile is switched off." Amrita said and Ambar pursed her lips.
"I'll just say bye to Mr. Mayank." Ambar hid her dismal and knocked the door twice before stepping inside.
"Hello, Mr. Mayank."
"Hello Ambar!" He paused
"So you're all set to start a new life." She just bobbed her head at his question.
"Best of luck! And if you need anything, you can always contact us and have a safe flight." He said.
"Thank you, Mr. Suri." She blinked.
"No... Ambar. Instead, I should be thanking you for being here as his support." His tone was sincere.
"It was a part of my job and he did a lot for me for which I'll be forever indebted to him." Ambar stated, "Take care." and she walked out of his room, joining her sister and the little boy in the corridor.
"Isn't he back?"
"No." Aakash replied and her smile disappeared.
She gripped her bag tightly, "Okay! Let's go."
------------------------------------------------
The chauffeur took out her luggage while they exited the car.
Throughout the car ride, Aakash had his arms around her.
His teary eyes spoke volumes of sadness which was clearly observed by her.
Ambar's gut constricted to see his affliction. Even she didn't wanted to leave him or anyone else but she had to.
She couldn't have stayed forever.
Every passing second was dreadful and his absence made it more worse.
She needed him... More than that, she wanted him...
Beside her, holding her hand, vouchsafing her hope to stick by her side always but none of it happened.
Her heart sank that he didn't even adieu her before leaving. May be she wasn't important to him like she had thought.
Nevertheless she had realised one thing... that she would never fall in love ever.. She had already caused enough of damage to her feelings and now, she wasn't going to risk it anymore.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the announcement for check-in procedure.
"Vashisht will be there to pick you up. Just call us once your flight lands... Take care Amy, I'll miss you dear." Amrita hugged her warmly.
She always found comfort in her hugs. Her Dida!
"I'll miss you both." She hugged them simultaneously.
"Amy!" Aakash cried.
"No kiddo! Please don't make this harder for me. Oh my boy!" Ambar cooed in his ears and gently wiped his tears.
"Bye Amy! I'm gonna miss you so much." He muttered, with tears still glistening down his plump cheeks.
"Me too... I love you guys..." She conveyed and grabbed the luggage trolley.
"We love you too." Amrita mused as she held back her tears and clutched Aakash's hand in her.
"Now go! I don't want you both to wait for me." She rubbed her eyes.
"Okay!" They smiled and she saw them dissappear.
She sighed out loud and held the trolley. Before she could walk away, unexpectedly she felt a strong hand on her shoulder which made her turn around and meet his glassy amber coloured eyes.
Nakul wasted no time to wrap her and she intensely melted in his embrace, enveloping herself in his scent.
His heart was hammering too against his chest.
"Where were you?" Her voice was hoarse.
"I had few things to figure out." He whispered huskily, holding her in his arms.
"I thought you won't come because you had said that you hated departures."
"Yes, I still hate them... but anyway I had to see you." He told her.
"Why?" She asked him and felt his lips on her cheeks and he pulled it closer to her ears.
He had to do this despite of not wanting, "To say good bye." He replied and all her hopes came down, crashing.
He rapidly withdrew his hand and before she could stop him, she saw his disengaging figure.
Nakul quickly hid behind the wall and saw her eyes shedding tears, looking so broken which pained him too.
"I'm sorry 'Little Sahay' but I had to do this.... For one last time... because after that I won't let you go away and soon, we'll be together once again."
